How Can I over come FEAR?

Thank you for taking your time to read this and also help with your contribution. I am so much consumed by it. Imagine this,I will be graduating in two years time and I am already scared of the job interview I might face. I sometime feel inferior or intimidated. I know that this is really bad for me if I have to succeed in live but I just dont have anybody with proven and tested therapy that could help out.

I sometime feel as if my tongue is tied down and I am un-able to speak in an interview.

Please ,how do I solve this problem?

FEAR is False Emotion Appearing REAL. And it's not REAL, it's all in your head.

Winebuddy, I disagree. Acting like fear is not real will not solve anyones problems.

What I suggest is that he try to balance fear, to manage it. Fear is very useful. "It tells us to run when a lion is out to get us" It also tells us to be careful about certain people or decisions we are wanting to make.

Listen to your fears but don't let them overcome you. Be alert and rational in all that you do. And most of all, always make calculated moves!!!

write down what you are doing and when and for how long..... stick with it and see what other things you could start adding once you are valueing your time properly

This is a good one from avenuegirl and I agree with her.

Hey dude, life still goes on no matter what happens. Just be yourself and go for any interview you are supposed to go, try your best and leave the rest to fate. Don't think too much about the result. If the job is yours it is gonna be yours. If it is not then move on with life and try again another time another place. Soon you will get what you want. Just don't be afraid to try on new things and don't give up. Good luck

I can remember 30 years ago when I was interviewing for my first "job" and then a couple years later when I first tried sales.

I would break into a sweat when I was faced with these new experiences. Not a light sweat, a sweat which beaded up on my forehead and would come dripping down. My tongue would get tied up in knots, and it was embarrassing.

I never considered it a reason to stop, simply a reason to try again. It was uncomfortable, I hated it, and I was nervous. I just kept moving forward.

A few years later I could walk into any business, ask to speak to the owner or president of the company, sit down and be completely relaxed talking to them. It was fun.

Since then I have sat down with entire boards of directors for small to medium businesses, been put in situations where a sales person was falling flat on their face in front of an entire room full of people, and in all those situations I could easily and comfortably step in front of them and just start talking feeling completely relaxed.

The point, I was YOU. I have felt your exact feelings. I understand what you are feeling...BUT, You already told us you have time before you graduate. Start applying for jobs you DO NOT WANT TODAY! Try to get an interview, go to the interview, and screw up... Go ahead, sweat, feel nervous, say the wrong thing, it is OK, you did not want the job anyway. Do it 10 times.

If you follow my advice, you will discover around the fifth or sixth interview everything starts getting easier. With each interview afterwards it will get even easier.

Now, to expand on the plan, sign up for another speech class at your school, or find somewhere you can do a short presentation, and do it. You will probably do horribly the first time, so what? It is just practice anyway.

Find opportunities to screw up today, so when the real interview comes up you can just laugh and go with confidence. You have already done the hard work in advance.

Many Internet Marketers have taken their time off and replied to bid farewell to your problem considering the fact that you are a member of Warrior Forum and a human being like everyone else on this forum.

I would suggest searching for the term before again asking 'What is that?'

But, this page is just one damn good resource for people searching to make an ebook on 'How to Face Interviews the IMers way?'. LOL, just kidding guys.

If you are serious about your problem, then I would suggest to take up a few interviews just to get a taste of how it would go on. It does not matter even if you puke in the first interview out of FEAR. THEY WILL CLEAN IT UP AND THEY DO NOT ASK YOU TO CLEAN IT.

Just keep your head light and know the subject beforehand.

If you dont do IM why are you here. Not to be rude, but how did you end up here ?? I got over fear by going door to door selling products. You either do it or starve. You should look at www.fearforums.com and see if there is something that may help you there. Good luck, try the sales thing though you can make money too.

Get into a public speaking or debating club (eg toastmasters) to get over the fear of speaking in public.

Go try and pick up women in nightclubs to get over your fear of rejection.

Not sure what you are afraid of in an interview. You are not going to die or go to jail.

The worst thing that is going to happen is you are going to be judged on what you say. That happens everywhere in life including here. There isn't much difference.

There is nothing to fear when you know your subject well and I would assume if you were to go to an interview it would be about something you know very well.

Imagine your interviewers are naked. That's a general psychological trick to put you at ease. Failing that, don't worry so much. If you're the right person for a job, you've a good chance of getting it, if not, you're trying to blag it.

Do what you do, or find a way of successfully glagging what you don't. From what I've read so far, this forum is really helpful, but not in that way.

Try to get several job interviews set up.

Then choose the one that's a job you're not excited about getting. Go to that one first to get your feet wet. If you blow it, no big deal. At least it's the job you didn't want anyway.

Keep practicing with the ones that don't matter and by the time you get to the interview you really want, you'll be ready.

I am already scared of the job interview
Many people are scared or at least nervous when attempting the unknown. Most people are unlikely to get the job at their first interview. It's like many things in life, one needs experience. In your case, experience of the interview situation.

Persevere, as the more interviews you attend, the more your confidence will grow and the better you will get.

Eventually you will get a job or start a career of your choice. That's when the real interview issues start as you will eventially want promotion and more promotion as you gain in age and experience.

Why do I bold 'real interview issues'. Well on your first interview with any organisation, you can tell 'little white lies' about yourself (and we all do it, anyone who disagrees is not telling the truth), that is, inflate your abilities and your achievements. Your interviewers will 99% of the time not know anything to contradict what you tell them. I am of course, not suggesting fraudulent misrepresentation here, simply that you promote yourself in the best way.

The real interview issues arise when you are part of an organization and are being interviewed for promotion or whatever. In this situation, the 'little white lies' are less likely to work, as you (your character, behaviour and qualities too) will probably be known (at least as they apply in the work place) to those interviewing you. Now you have to rely on and emphasise your achievements within the organization and how, if your are promoted, you can assist in moving your organization forward.

Having worked for many large organizations, both as interviewee and interviewer, before working for myself, these are just my thoughts on your post.

Best of luck with your chosen career,

        Jeff.

From what you have written it seems that you are quite self conscious and have a negative self image which are all contractions of the energy field, they drive you further into yourself and fear is the biggest contraction of all.

Learning to relax and be in a relaxed state regardless of what might be happening around you is the most valuable skill you can learn.

Placing your attention out there and observing what is occuring is also helpful and very revealing. And you might be surprised by the things that you will notice.

For instance, the seemingly confident individual standing in front of you, giving forth, turns out not to be so confident at all but has just learned how to project himself beyond his fears.

As for therapies, you could try a good NLP'ist or even take a practioners course yourself.

Take up a martial art. Because everything is physical (yes, even thoughts are things). You will gain confidence in interacting with others at a very deep level which can extend way beyond the the training hall.

And if you find a good instructor, especially in one of the internal arts you will learn how to manipulate your own energies. Very useful!

    All the Best

This fear is natural, it is a drive to help us prepare to gain desired results. instead of focusing on the fear you currently have, focus on the reason why you want to over come that fear. think about the pleasures gained when overcoming this fear and also think about the pain that may occur if you don't overcome this fear.

now that being said, in theory success = 80% why (your drive/reason) & 20% how

for the how part, google job interview tips, common job interview questions, good job interview answers. and roleplay them in your head or in front of a mirror. this will increase your confidence and probability of success.

    Hi Jideofor
Here are a few tips for you that I have picked up over the years of my life's experiences :
Fear only exists in your mind so change your mind. You can do this by choice.
Most peoples fears never materialise e.g. your interview in 2 years may not happen at all, you may win the lotto and have no need for a job and therefore no need of the interview.

If you know feeling inferior and intimidated is really bad for you, stop feeling that way and start feeling good things about yourself.

When you start saying bad things about yourself ask a friend to interrupt you in mid flight and cancel out your bad or negative statements by changing them for good statements about yourself.

As for the dried up mouth and stuck down tongue try keeping your saliva in your mouth deliberately longer than usual to keep it moist and a few deep breaths to help you relax.

A little exercise you could do is to write out your life a bit like this......

Hi Thanks for reading this. I really enjoy interacting with you guys and gals. I will be starting my new job in 2 years time having breezed through my interviews for my first choice career. I was so impressive that the ceo who interviewed me last before offering me the job said "I would be starting on a higher salary than was usual due to my having extremely high qualifications"

Ok so you get the idea. I am not a qualified hypnotist, npler or anything else but I have seen these techniques work over the years for loads of people including myself so just give them a try and come back in 2 years time after trying them consistently and tell us your results.

OH! Congratulations on your new job.
    best wishes

I know exactly how you feel. I had the same problem. I felt intimidated in an interview situation and wanting to ace it made me even more nervous.

Practice interviewing. Get some friends to be the boss. If you're introverted and don't have friends, good time to get out and make some. Learning to be social helps a lot. Get used to talking to people.

There are quite a few good resources around to help you practice interviews. Google it and find out the kind of questions you may be asked. Being prepared is more than half the battle.

Most of the things we fear - never happen.

You have two years. Try to stop thinking about your fear of interviews - in two years you could think yourself into a phobia just by worrying it.

Spend the two years getting out of your comfort zone - make new friends - talk to strangers when there's the opportunity - smile at people who serve you in a restaurant or store and make small conversation with them. Once you begin to interact more on a person-to-person basis you will realize those people are listening to what you say rather than judging how you say it.

Your fear is of how you will be perceived - change your own perception of your ability to interact with others one person at a time.

When you fear something, the only surefire way of defeating it is by facing it head on. Don't shy away from what it is that you fear, but instead of go out of your way to expose yourself to it; take every opportunity you can to stare it in the face.

With repeated exposure and practice, you'll find that the fear will gradually subside. The worst thing to do is inaction, i.e. avoidance of what you fear. By doing that, it'll only make the fear stronger.

I feel the interview fear is an example of the extent of the
    problem with fear.

Unless I missed it, you haven't been back to comment. Good
point about wondering if you're doing research for a product.
    But whatever.

I lived most of my life in fear. You have no idea. People can be
callous with their remarks if they've never experienced fear
like the OP (assuming it's for real) may, or I did.

It took a long time to get to a point where there's no fear of
anything. Not being a macho guy about it, either.

I noticed over many years that the very best way to get over
a fear is to squarely face it. It can be completely terrifying. But
I've overcome so many fears exactly like that. The more you do
it, the better it gets and future confrontations with fear are less
    fearful.

It works. The first one you face is the worst.

I began my long journey to overcome fear in 1995, I guess. I took
a Dale Carnegie public speaking course. It lasted 3 months, we met
once a week, and had to give a speech every week. There were
about 40 people in the class. We had to give an impromptu speech
the very first class. I about died.

That experience changed me forever. I still had fears about things,
but I began confronting them, as I said, squarely one at a time.

You can talk all you want. Tell yourself anything you want. All the
well-intentioned things. Affirmation, or whatever. But you're still
scared crapless when the thought is in your head of whatever it is
    that makes you afraid.

Nothing else matches looking the thing you're afraid of in the eyes
    and plowing through it.

But maybe that's just what worked for me. Others may not be able
to do that. I'll say they are able, but if they believe they're not - then
    they're not. Right?

Whenever fear wants to take hold of you, take a deep breath. If it continues, slap yourself. If it continues, look yourself in a standing mirror and ask yourself, "Is everybody afraid?" The answer is NO. Then tell yourself, "Now, come on change before something worse than fear happens to you."

If you really love yourself and I'm sure you do, you will change.

My own problem is that I don't know how to be afraid. I think I'm highly favored.

I love this quote: "Do it afraid - courage will come later."

As far as your current situation, gear yourself up to think about it a bit differently. Your EMPLOYER should be the one who's nervous. Here is a stellar candidate walking in for an interview and he needs to do whatever he can to get you to join his company.

You're deeply qualified. You have the opportunity to go interview anywhere. So why should you work for THEM?

Go in there with extreme confidence (not to the point where you're cocky) and remember that this truly is a two way street. Yes, you need a job. But they NEED a qualified candidate too.

Hi Jide, a lot of helpful pieces of advice have been given not just to you alone but to all who may have this life problem of overcoming fears. So i will add my persnal experience to these. When i bought my first car and after some primary driving training i noticed that i could not still drive. I was so terrified that whenever i entered the car , my legs will start shaking and one day a friend of my told me to understand that i was the one in control of the car and not the other way round. And the moment i realized that i was the one in control i just entered the car, turned on the ignition and drove off though not perfectly. So my advice is for you to realize that you are the one in control of your life and will be able to do whatever you decide to do even to overcome any fear.

There is a lot of good advice in this thread. I found that having a friend role play with me the interviews I had for my first social work job was helpful. She asked questions I hadn't anticipated. You can also look online and find industry-specific questions. For instance, with therapy I was asked about which branch of psychotherapy I wanted to specialize in and what types of groups was I comfortable conducting. But there are often
general questions asked, such as what are your strengths.

Breathing slowly before going in, holding breath for 10 seconds, exhaling it out and holding out for another 5-10 seconds is helpful. Sit in the car and do that for five minutes and it calms the mind and will make you more present in the interview.

    I must not fear.
    Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
    I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
    Only I will remain.

    Ji,

Feel the fear and do it anyway. Fear is a result of anticipating the future, and basing it off of what happened to you in the past. All you have is the "NOW".
If there is one thing you need to know in this world, it is the fact that You are Sufficient. Always. In this moment you have the talents and abilities you need to carry you forward into the next moment. You will be amazed at where time takes. You will be well.

    1. GET EXPERIENCE - No matter what it is, find some kind of experience doing something that you can talk about. Even if it is IM or college sports, do something besides video games and JO.
    2. BE REAL - Don't pretend to be someone your not just to get a job. I am procrastinator but I WILL NOT MISS A DEADLINE. I just got a new job and I told this to my interviewer. "I never miss a deadline" If you miss deadlines reassess your self.
    3. NO BIG DEAL - Go on lots of interviews for practice. If you don't get offers, you get free practice and its no big deal. Worst case scenario you are in the same position your in now.

There is so much great advice in this thread. Most of us can relate to feeling fear when we step out of our comfort zone. Something that has helped me over the years is to become more aware of why I feel afraid; it sounds simple, but it's important. Sometimes the fear of success is as great as the fear of failure, for example. If someone is the first person to get a college or university degree in their family, they can be very proud and happy, but also afraid of forging ahead into areas where no one else has gone. I've known a few people who have felt that way.

Believing in God, facing one's fears, doing physical work, getting out more... these are all great but only if they actually apply to the person who is feeling the fear. Being aware of what we're doing, and especially what it means to us, can help us feel more in control, and therefore less likely to panic when feeling fear. As pointed out, fear is a healthy feeling, a way for us to know that we're doing something we aren't sure of. Be aware of this, practice as much as you can for specific skills, and "Feel the fear and do it anyway".

Just my two cents' worth. Let us know how you're doing.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. People aren't afraid of the thing, they're afraid of the fear.

When you look at it logically, there is zero to fear in an interview. Unless the interview is with someone you need to convince not to kill you. Then you've got something to fear.

Change your perspective. When I was going on job interviews, my biggest fear was in not getting a job. If i didn't get a job I would have to live with my father and step mother. And if they wanted to kick me out, I could be homeless. I can go on about all the fears I had if I didn't get a job.

The point is to leverage the fear to force yourself to have no choice but to pass any interview.

On what you can do to get better at it; go buy 'how to win friends and influence people'. I have it on CD and listen to it over and over.

Get audio CD's by some of the great sales people like Zig Ziglar. He's awesome. I used to write out his stuff and read it into a recorder trying to imitate him.

    Someone mentioned Toastmasters. Great advice.

Take an acting class. if you're in school, jump into a class.

    hope that helps

All fear comes from thinking too much about the future. Concentrate on living in the present and your you will feel fear so much less.

I used to spend nearly all my day thinking and worrying about the future. When I started learning to quieten my mind and live in the present, my life changed so much. I find that the less I think about the future, the better things always seem to work out.

I know this may sound crazy if you've never thought about it before but the present is waaaay more important than the future (because it's real). Exploring meditation and spirituality can help a lot. Just a deep breath is all you need to clear your mind - no huge effort required.

Here's the thing, nothing in life is what it appears to be, even your thoughts or feelings. Try and think about yourself in the 3rd person...i.e. instead of using "I am already scared of job interview" speak, "my mind is scared of the job interview". Just changing the words you think and speak will do something profound. Eventually it will create detachment from the problem... which is your way of thinking. Then you won't be controlled by it anymore. Try it for 7 days and see what happens. I promise it will bring peace and relaxation to your life as the only problem we have is identification with our problems.

    Food for thought.

All I can say as a person who use to be in a hiring position there are more people who want to see you succeed the fail even if they appear to be strangers. They have accepted you as a potential hire and just want to see if you have a pulse and a personality.

The pulse is a give me and just lay it on the line with personality and try to think of them as family and friends when you go in.

If you have made it to an interview they really think your are a possible team member .... !!!

    FEAR:

    Forget
    Everything
    And
    Relax

Seriously.....you just need to relax and be yourself. Don't make yourself into someone you are not.....someone the interviewer wants you to be. It takes FAR more energy to put a Fake shell than it does to just be yourself. Trust me, being yourself shows how genuine you are....which will leave nothing left to fear.

    Best of luck,

What i feared most in the past was to call to a company before even getting a job interview. So just asking if they needed someone for a job would freak me out.

I don't really know how I overcame that? I know I had a big issue with my self esteem.
The way I handled that was indeed to go out and face my fears. Sometimes a few beers would help me in that. I would not encourage that, also not to take amphetamine, cos it could lead to an addiction and that leaves you much worse than you where before.

The best way is just to go out and do the things you fear most. Do this together with someone you trust. A best friend would be great for this, also if he/she knows your problem. And than you will have a mayor growth in just a few weeks of practicing this.

That is the way I overcame my fears, and it is the hardest but also most quickest way possible. And afterwards you will laugh at all those silly fears you've got before.

Hope to be of good help to you.

Fear is always there. Everyone has their own fear, and to overcome that fear, you must have to face that fear. Basically, the concept of fear is all psychological. People are too afraid to do things simply because they have in their mind that they cannot do it and are too afraid to experience failure when they want to do something. As a result, they will have to decide to shy away from the task and chooses to do nothing to avoid failures and committing mistakes. These kinds of people will never reach their goal because of fear. Fear got the best in them, and in their panic, they will do nothing. Facing fear is a challenge that one has to experience. Without experience, people will not learn from it and will always be afraid to do things on their own.
It was in this article that said, man's greatest fear is fear itself. The idea of fear in your mind will always be there if you do not face that fear. An acrophobic will definitely overcome his fear of heights if he faces that fear by challenging himself that he can go to these heights. In this manner, he would overcome that fear by doing things he is very afraid of.
If your present lifestyle is what you say is giving you this "fear", change your mind set on how to face people. As what I have read also, change your mind, and you will definitely change your life.
    Just try, nothing is impossible.

From which side of the desk?

Stop putzing around, worrying about things that are 2 years in future!

Concentrate on building your business and I guarantee you won't have any problem! Even as a student you can find two or three hours a day for that without it having any impact on schooling or your GPA! Hopefully, the less time you have, the less tempted and less tolerant you'll be about wasting it. (That usually takes the better part of a lifetime to learn, BTW, and you heard it here free!)

Besides, all the economic forecasts are pretty damned bleak for the next couple of years (probably read that as 'the rest of this decade'), so your best prospects are in your own business - not any entry-level job!

you need to tell yourself over and over again, untill you finally believe it that you are the best. You need to develop an ego and confidence in yourself. Find the mentality of "i can do anything i want" and make it happen. If you want something, dont grovel and ask for it, do what you can to get it yourself. Make your life your own, and get everythign you want in life.
