What's Your List Building Strategy?

Hey everyone,

I've been an on-and-off guest/creeper on this forum over the last couple of months taking a look at random little bits of information here and there. Anyway, I just graduated from school, and I'm looking to get into this full time. I'm trying my hand at internet marketing my stock market product (a book, audio series, and DVD devoted to teaching trend following).

But like most newbies, I'm having a hard time generating traffic. I have dabbled in Google AdWords, Bing advertising, and Facebook advertising. The first two were pretty worthless. Facebook ads got me decent traffic, but the price of my product wasn't high enough to justify the CPC.

In the last few days, I've started up a video blog with 2 videos a day as endorsed by Gideon Shalwick in his Rapid Video Blogging report. At the beginning and the end of the videos, it shows the address for my landing page (where they have to input their e-mail address before they come to my 22 minute video sales letter ala Ryan Deiss). Only difference is that I'm doing ScreenFlow videos because me talking into the camera is worth a lot less than me pointing at stock charts on screen lol. In the couple of days that I've been doing it, I've had about 100 views on the videos and 1 sale. I'm not thrilled with the conversion rate, but it's not too bad. I plan on continuing making these videos each and every day so that I optimize my blog and my videos for my relatively niche keywords.

Any ideas about how to generate more traffic to my website?

Like I said, I'm not thrilled with the conversion rate, but I can't really get an idea of whether the conversions are low because I'm not doing a good job of selling or whether the sample size is so low to make any judgments on that.

I'd welcome any comments/criticism about my website if you guys have any, too. I can't post any links because I'm such a fresh little noob here, but hopefully in the next couple of days I can post the link. The name of my business is BootYourBroker if you want to figure out for yourself where my website might be on the internet lol ;-)

Looking forward to your feedback!

    1) Start capturing leads and giving them really good info in your followup emails.
    2) SEO and backlinks with keywords
    3) See #1

If you could capture 30 to 50 percent of your traffic with something free and then followup with them with good stuff they want to hear about, a LOT more will buy from you.

    my 2 cents.

Hey Joe have you tried posting in free classified ads like Craigslist and Gumtree.com? You can even put a link to your videos that may be helpful. Thats where I generate most of my leads and it doesn't cost me a dime. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps!

Wow! I wouldn't think that Craigslist would be good for list building unless someone posts an add for legitonlinejobs.com or something similar, but those adds would easily be flagged for removal. Where do you post? In the community, discussion, or services section? What kind of products do you focus on?

      Thanks,

Mainly focus on the education section as I am giving free video lessons and ebooks on learning to market online. The way I structure the "ad" makes it all legit and ok to post on craigslist because I am offering help to the community.

Post your ads on 'business for sale' section and post in major cities. Different ones and change the wording on your ads so they are not the same. Don't sell. Don't explain. Generate curiosity. Example ad:
        Easy Automated Biz
        Massive Potential
        For the Brave Few

    Hi Joe,
Buying solo ads means going to the Warrior Forum Joint Venture section to look for mega list owners who sell solo ads to their list for 500-1000 clicks.

You have to find them, PM them for price quote.

It's very simple, just that you need to trust them and keep track of the clicks they send you on that day.

My List building system is a little different to everyone else's as I have some cool software and api intergrations.

However when I started out without these things my system went like this

mine started out with webinas and surfing the forums on one topic Email marketing in which I would comment and talk about email marketing till i could no longer speak or type. It's a hard way of doing it but has the most loyal and highest converting subscribers.

I also did interviews with leading experts in the field and then advertisied that interview as a $17 product with a $5 upsell to a transcript of the product to the experts list and also got people who bought the product to come to my list. Which would later be sold to a re-occuring membership site.

Now days I use and automated webinar system that grabs interested prospectes from PPC, facebook ads, linkedin, web 2.0, JV's, Adswaps, forums, ebay lisitings and speaking events that all go into a gauntlet series of emails that promote them to sign up for a free webinar with a $2000 backend product.

Hope that give you some ideas

I read all the above comments, they are good, but nobody really tell that people buy from marketers they know, trust, and look professional.
To know you, you must be active in Forums, Facebook, Bing, Yahoo ask, Google Buzz, Twitter and so on
To build the trust, this is a delicate subject, you have to give some good value for free, build a positive relationship with your list, post frequently enough that people don't forget about you, and always come up with quality information
    To look professional:
    - if you promote affiliate Digital Products, you must have a squeeze page in your domain, you must buy that product and create a review in which demonstrate that you know more then what is written in author sale page as you are a user of that product,
    - if you are selling your Digital Product, do not hype, be honest, talk about benefits of the product, not about the features, use quality graphics, over deliver with bonuses, sell rights to you product as well
And whatever you do/sell/blog build your list!

Personally I am blogging a lot, I didn't spread myself in entire Social Media, I stay only with big boys: Google, Bing, Facebook, Linkedin. I work hard to monetize my blogs and I do some teaching as well, usually for free.

    Hope it will help.

    Hi Joe

Video looks good, man. Are you working the forums in your niche? If not, you probably should be. Add value and build relationships with people who can help you. But when looking for people to help you, always figure out how you can help them first.

Sounds like you have a good plan for creating content. Stick with it. Many times, folks give up too soon. It's a lot of work and takes a long time but can be well worth it in the long run. Traffic via content creation takes time, patience, persistence and more content. Always more content.

I'd highly recommend adding a Tell-A-Friend page to your process. This can turn one opt-in into 2, 3, 4 or more. That's free traffic. And I'm not just saying that because I have a free WSO with a Tell-A-Friend tool which happens to be in my sig... but it's a great way to increase your results.

    Hi:

I use ebay to build most of my list.

    1) set up a "squeeze page" on ebay "about me" page

    2) run hundreds of auctions on ebay, put a link on each auction to point to "about me" page.

    3) write guides and submit to ebay, make sure each guide contain a link back to "about me" page

    4) make sure all emails (winning notification, item shipped, feedback reminder..) sent to your customers contain a link back to your "about me" page.

    Hope it helps

    Clickable links in your video
Clickable links in OTHER peoples videos

SEO benefits of being on YouTube
    Embedding options

The list goes on and on.

Twitter has been the biggest builder of my list so far. Ad swaps are a great way to build a list for free as well, but I have captured well over 1,000 leads from free twitter traffic alone.

The reason I have been so successful with Twitter is because I automate my connection building with a program called TweetAdder. Check out my TweetAdder video review for more information.

Here is a post I wrote about 35 ways to get more twitter followers that should also help.

Easy Cheese. Start networking where your target market networks, and don't stray from that safety net. Marketing to every other interest in the world (which is what you'll do with non-targeted advertising) is a waste of money and time.

1% conversation rate is pretty much the standard online, I'd be thrilled with that result because it means you can scale up to thousands of views . to be honest with I think you would be much better off doing solo e-mail drops with already established stock market publishers. So whether it's an email list from digital product owner or online newsletter/journal or even a snail mail list on SRDs.

If you have tried FB, Adwords,Bing etc..then why not bite the bullet and stick your ad in the WSJ or other places where people with real money who are thirsty for your information and might even thank you for it

There's a LOT of information here about list-building. Simply do a search. There have been several threads recently about how to build a list.

To start you out, here are 11 list-building/traffic strategies for you. Pick 2 or 3 of the easiest for you to do now and work on those. Don't try to do everything at once. Once you get some success, then build on that.

      1. Create free, live teleseminar on your topic.

I don't know about you, but for me, it's a lot easier to yap about a topic for an hour than it is to sit down and write a 10 or 20 page report.

Advertise your free teleseminar on your own website (it can be your bait for the opt in), in your own e-zine, in other e-zines and Web sites of targeted associations and organizations (join these orgs if necessary), and anywhere you'd usually advertise your business.

      2. Turn that same content into an audio class.

Don't create more work than is necessary here. Simplicity is key.

You can record several different live teleseminars and pick the best one or simply do a recording of you talking into your computer. Again, don't SOUND like that's what you're doing! Pretend you're sitting down with a friend for coffee and explaining your topic.

Post the recording on your Web site and require that people opt-in to get access. (This will also free up a lot of your time when you're ready to move away from live calls.)

      3. Turn it into a special report.

Take your call, have it transcribed and cleaned up and post it as a free report. MUCH easier than staring at a blank MS Word screen, trust me! 10-30 pages is fine. End your report with a promotion for your product or service. Add tracking links throughout the report so that you know where those clicks came from. I know 1 Shopping Cart offers link tracking.

(See? Same piece of content, 3 different promotions. Ok, marching on...)

      4. Turn that same content into a live talk.

When you're ready, you can start giving talks to your target market. But use the same info and format that you already have and just tweak it for your audience and venue.

Locate groups of your target market. Speak for FREE or $$$$. Sell your products and services at the event. (I believe the host usually takes a commission)

For those times when you're not allowed to "pitch" or promote in any way, use the GIVEAWAY DRAWING strategy to build your list. (This works best if you have a physical product with you.)

When you're done with your talk, smile and ask who would like a FREE [insert your product here]. Hosts and promoters usually don't have a problem with this (it makes them look good to their audience too since everyone loves to get something for free).

Describe your product (to let them know what they're going to get), let the audience know that everyone who enters your drawing will be added to your list and receive a complimentary subscription to your e-zine .

Pass a fishbowl or hat around and have everyone drop their card in. Pick a card and give away your product. Someone gets a free product and YOU get everyone in the room onto your list.

      5. Be a frequent teleseminar guest.

You've already located groups of your target market. Offer to be a guest on their teleseminars. If they're not holding teleseminars, then offer to host a free call for them and give their audience great free information and give the partnering organization a commission on all referred sales. If possible, negotiate to get a copy of the registration list as part of the deal. Better yet, direct their registrants to YOUR site and have the registration be an opt-in to YOUR list.

      6. Advertise in other e-zines, websites and publications.

Too many people (and IMers in particular) simply don't spend enough time or $$$$ building their list. They're cheap and want everything for free. Big mistake. Your list is your biggest asset, the one that will feed you for life so be willing to invest in it. If you're tracking like you should be, you'll know exactly how many sales came from whatever activity and so you'll know exactly how much you can afford to spend. Direct Marketing 101.

Choose publications your target market reads and advertise your free (whatever your opt-in bait is), NOT your product or service. Your primary goal is to get them on your list. THEN you can sell them.

      7. Plaster your articles all over the Web.

Ask the article marketers here who know: article marketing pays. Recycle every article you write for your e-zine and submit them to appropriate e-zines and article directories.

      8. Attend live events.

Look around for conferences and seminars with leaders in your industry and that your target market attends. Pay more to sponsor an exhibit and look for unique ways to get noticed. (One Internet marketer I know of planned a party at an event she attended and invited everyone from the conference hosts and leaders to the attendees. Simply by virtue of the fact that she's planned and hosted it, she was seen as very gracious and people were very open to her after that.)

      9. Give great testimonials.

Give generous and honest testimonials for other people's products and services. Ask them if you can be featured on their websites, along with your URL. They may very well agree to this and even though that URL probably won't be a hyperlink, people can still find you.

Remember that results-based testimonials are most likely to be featured since they sell the most.

      10. Go viral for a rush of subscribers.

You might follow Scott Stratten's example and create a short Flash movie with an opt-in box at the end. He did The Time Movie (which I believe is still up) and got an insane number of people on his list in a very short time. The catch to that is that his movie (and thus his list) was very general and not very targeted. But you can get creative and see what you can do to make it more targeted.

      11. Use a book to build your list.

I think that most people have dreamed of writing a book and becoming a famous author at some point (myself included). But the truth is, you're not very likely to get rich writing a book. In fact, you're not likely to make any money writing a book at all (unless you're direct-response oriented and self-publish).

But a book is a GREAT LIST-BUILDER! It gives you tremendous credibility and people don't typically throw away books. They'll throw away your business card and your brochure. They'll click away from your site. But they're not likely to throw away your book.

There are a lot of options for self-publishing. Don't believe anyone who tells you that a traditional publishing house offers an author more credibility than self-publishing. People want to know about the book, if it's any good and who the author is and what makes him qualified to write the book. Nobody ever asks who the publisher is.

Obviously, this isn't a first step for a newbie, but it's definitely something to keep in the back of your mind. There are lots of options for self-publishing: everything from going it alone (check out Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual -- a FABULOUS book (I own a couple of copies) to people offering coaching programs and done-for you services designed to help get your book out of your head and into print.

I have personal experience with this one as my first book was published last year. I had the VERY BEST help and guidance: I was mentored by Sheri McConnell, founder and CEO of the National Association of Women Writers.

I went with a hybrid publishing solution: I published as an imprint of an established publishing house with over 120 titles. The book is GORGEOUS and I'm THRILLED with the results!

There you are: 11 list-building strategies to keep you busy and get your list growing. Just keep your target market in mind: WHO are they and what problem does your product or service solve for them?

      Hope that helps!

    A few tips:

    - always think quality first in any freebie you offer, it's your long-term reputation you are want to build

    - deliver what you promise

    - don't bang them with upsells and cross-sells so soon, all they wanted was a little free sample to try you out

    - associate yourself with other good people who are long-term players

(from the guy who started the internet gift giveaway back in Dec 2003)

My own strategy goes as follows:
    1) Creating a product that I'll give away as a freebie in exchange for their email addresses
    2) Propose them another freebie they can have if they refer other subscribers (Private script to do that but some are free out there)
    3) Let your visitors work for you

      Hey Joe,
Where do they refer other subscribers at? Is this a form you put on your thankyou page? Where would you create the form to capture this information? Does Aweber do this? Thanks

Ps. What if instead of hunting people down until they begged you to stop... pre-qualified prospects actually sought you out and asked you what you do and how you do it? Click here.
