Full Time IM'ers - Do you work on weekends?

Just curious how many full timers out there work on the weekends. I find myself working on the weekends, & as much as I hate it sometimes... I actually enjoy it, lol.

I do try to do only easy work on the weekends of course

What about you?

Not many. Drives me nuts. I work seven days a week. Come Friday evening, nobody's around. I'm trying to get stuff done, and if I need to get hold of someone else? Not happening. And then they don't show up online until Monday afternoon, because they're full-time IMers and don't have to get up early anymore.

    Pisses me off, I swear.

Heh, ya that's quite annoying. I notice that when I'm in the office during the week my partner & I might only do 1-3 hours of REAL WORK each day... I guess that's why I don't mind working on the weekends.

Although, We are full time affiliate SEO IM'ers... We don't really do much coaching as of yet, so I imagine our situations are slightly different

Yea, it it wasn't for having to watch my favorite TV programs on certain days of the week, I would have no clue what day of the week it is. Saturday is the same as Wednesday to me.

      Definitely.

I mean really, what good is a paper calendar? If I don't remember what yesterday was how will it help me determine what today is?

Thank goodness I just have an updating calendar in my sidebar.

I have an online store with a 1-800 number so customers can place orders.

I've often wondered if I could get the search engines to take the weekend off.

They won't do it, so I can't either.

Sometimes...if i feel like it on the weekends. However, i've been lazy for the past month or so and putting in only about 1-2 hours per day on the weekdays. I'm starting to get into work mode again and i can put in approx 4-6 hours per day or more. The beauty of working online. I'm no online rich guru cause i choose to be low profile and i'm comfortable with how much i'm making online now.

Working on the weekends is completely up to you. I work from home full time and I choose my own hours.

Sometimes I work on the weekends. Sometimes I take a week off. It all depends on what you have to get done and what you WANT to do!

I rarely take a weekend off. And I guess I work so much because I enjoy what I'm doing. To me, working on the weekend isn't any different than working in the middle of the night. That's one of the great things about working online - you can work when you want to.

My kids are grown and I really can choose the times I work - the weekends are as good a time as any other for me. And like others have said, I can choose to take time off in the middle of the week or any other time if that's what I want to do. I think I have become addicted to working at my business - and that's probably not such a bad thing!

The other thing is that I prefer to run all my errands and do grocery shopping etc.. during the week when less people are about so I'd rather take time off then and then work more during the weekend.

Even on most of the 'real' jobs I've had, Saturday and Sunday were just bookends on the calendar. Evenings and weekends were when the customers were out, so we were open. Rather than TGIF, we lived by SWIF (So what, it's Friday)

I do take days off, of course. And on the days my wife has off, I may only work a few hours. Yesterday, for example, we spent the afternoon at the beach watching the first of the tourists and snowbirds who had paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to come here. The weather was perfect, the sea air was fresh, even the humidity was down.

I much prefer to work when I want to and also take time

Yes I have worked most of today, it can be a little hard to balance work with 'real life' sometimes, but I have a goal and I am going to get there.

I have a great support network to help me get there.

I mainly do consultation work for businesses throught the day, so I am based offline a lot of the time.

I work on weekends most of the time, but have the flexibility to take off when I need to. As someone mentioned above, when you're full-time in IM, sometimes the boundaries between work and play get blurred, and you don't have that clearly delineated concept of workdays (Monday to Friday) and weekends anymore, unlike people who have regular jobs. When you're doing IM fulltime, you're basically your own boss and call the shots - there is no boss or superior to answer to!

Seems like the theme is consistent here. I can't resist throwing in my two cents, from a slightly different angle, being that I have a regular FT job, and I do IM on the side. My wife is not on board with the concept - go figure. So, I do most of my IM work alongside my day job (project management) and squeeze in what I can in the evening and yes, even on the weekends. For my wife, this is valuable time, and I won't let IM get in the way of this.

Weekends are a concept for the 9-5 people who have a regular job as an employee, the boundaries get blurred when you work for yourself in your own business. Don't even think for a second that this only applies to small-timers, ask Donald Trump how many hours he works during an average week (including weekends), and I bet you his answer will trump (sorry, I just couldn't resist the pun!) the average employee's 40-50 hour work week!

I really try and avoid it for my own sanity but I find that I start drifting back to the computer answering emails and checking stats. This inevitably leads to me thinking I need to get more work done and all of a sudden I have put in hours of work.

I balance out my 'weekend working' when I go on vacation because then I don't check my computer for several days on end. The bottom line is I enjoy what I do so the occasional weekend work isn't so bad.

Depends on what's going on that particular weekend. If I'm bored I might smoke a dub, sit back and get some creative projects out of the way. I really do enjoy most aspects of what I do so I can work weekends and still enjoy it. Especially if I'm really engaged in something new. I usually work myself up into a frenzy and I'm too antsy to go out. If I'm really onto something I'll think about it constantly until it is done.

I'm absolutely NOT a workaholic either. I'll burn myself out and go a week or two without getting any work done. I'm strange that way.

    Cheers,
    Matt

Ahh yes, the weekend. That's when the family wants to do some sort of group activity. Sometimes I can dodge that...:p

I really pay little attention to what day in the week it is--I have to look at the calendar for the date. My day generally starts with waking up at about 9-10AM, and concludes about 3 or 4AM. Some nights are early--1AM or so. Tonight is a 3AM workday. I do this 7 days a week...

This is a mixed affair--throughout the day I do break to attend different activities. This takes about 5 hours out of the work flow. My niche is Web 2.0 socionets based upon the Joomla! platform--and the average development time on the core is about 180 hours. This runs the gamut of planning, graphics design, FAQ creation and editing, coding specific application functions, configuration, testing, etcetera. After this comes the marketing work--selecting appropriate affiliate vendors based upon the market study site demographic and building placement and directories within the site structure. That is another 140 hours or so. Then there is getting local advertising and sponsor placement, grassroots & viral member growth, and travel. There is also a 400K+ member forum that I manage and have to keep up with.

Then, on to the next site whilst continuing the marketing operations of the previous. Perhaps when this game I have started (a couple months ago) hits its projected gross revenues in about a year--I will stop the 7 day part. But that simply does not fit into the goal structure anytime in the near future.

I must say that every week and a half I have a "to hell with it" day. There is little productive done--as a matter of fact, I try to not be productive and find other amusing projects or hobby activities to take up the time. Otherwise, I will either stroke out or lose my mind...

Firstly, IM full time is a whole new paradigm if you have the freedom to work when you want. Therefore, the whole notion of traditional weekends probably no longer applies to most of us.

For some reason, I now find myself working in a timeless universe. There are no more set 9-5 hours as there once was.

However due to having a young family, it ties up my weekends, and therefore, I only work if something is urgent.

Either way, I usually take most of Monday off and have some me time.

The other factor is time zones. Being down under, most of my contacts, clients and staff are on different zones. So Monday is a good time to have a break, because it's Sunday int he USA.

Then again, who needs weekends when you can work own hours?

Other than a couple skype calls, I have 'worked' almost two hours this month. I do not remember if it was on a weekend or not. ) I think 20 minutes was on a Sunday.
I am a firm believer in 'the 4 hour work month'.

Sometimes I will work the weekend and sometimes not. Depends if I am nearly finished a project or not. I normally hike up in the mountains midweek. That kind of breaks up the week and gives my brain cells a new lease of life.

It never feels like work to me anyway. I used to have an offline business. Six days a week, often 16 hr days. Wage bills, tax, Vat, pensions, holidays, sickness, cash flow.
No this does not feel like work at all.

Just found this online right now: "If you work 8 hours all day long - you won´t be a millionaire!" (Donald Trump)

I agree with Donald. If you want be a millionaire some day you should work for yourself and more than 8 hours a day, plus weekends of course, but I am lazy and sometimes like to have a drink with my friends.

  • I'm a full-time IMer, and I do 7 days a week. Until such time as I'm able to hire enough staff that I can trust to be as dedicated as myself I shall continue to do so.
Once I can head-hunt enough dedicated dogs, I shall stop barking myself.
Actually, I probably won't. I'll just start another project, lol.

Some interesting thoughts on this thread.

But, I hope like hell that all of you have some balance and perspective in life.

I must confess that at first I was addicted to this... but now I have different priorities.

My personal view is that if you're doing this full time and you still have to work weekends, then you're not making enough $$ or you haven't set your business up correctly.

If it's a lifestyle choice, then good for you.

I have a different take on this--but agree on certain points. Balance is necessary, especially for those that have families. Burying oneself in IM in no different than someone with a shiny new degree beginning the corporate ladder climb. It takes a lot of hours and effort to achieve the result.

A lot of people confuse earning a living with accumulating personal wealth. And by wealth, I mean sufficient reserves to comfortably go through life, provide safety in times of crisis or need, and build up a sufficient portfolio for retirement years. Trading off time and effort now in the proper manner helps to ensure that those things happen!

Do I want to work 16 hours per day? Hell no, as I am now an age that I want to slow down and get more engaged with the world around me. I don't have that many more years left... But the new economy of the past decade, poorly managed retirement investments in a bad market, and real estate mistakes have put me where this is necessary. That too shall change...

There is comfort, and there is security. I need the latter--so, obsession is the rule right now. My accountant will let me know when its not!

I agree, and have found myself in a similar situation in the past.

It's just a fine line between doing what needs to be done and insanity.

I pretty much missed out on my son's first 4 years due to being changed to my PC.

So my only advice is for people to keep some balance. Work away by all means, but keep a balance. Isolating yourself from the world is not healthy for you... regardless of how much money you make.

In my experience only.. of course.

As a writer I seem to be able to get away with not working on weekends specifically, but I do work all the time.

I guess what I am saying is I am not doing specific assignments for clients but instead thinking of new ideas, brainstorming, tweaking my own sites, etc.

I like to be able to spend time with my girlfriend, family, and friends on the weekend, my thought is if I have to work all weekend, why bother working online? Id be better off 9-5. Maintaining a schedule is essential for me.

I work weekends, but not the whole weekend, as I have a husband and 3 kids to think of. Gotta have that family time.

At the same time, I need some of that weekend time to work. I have one toddler, and homeschool one of my kids in addition to running my business. Weekends are a valuable source of work hours for me, where I can work while my husband handles the kids. That's split with regular family activities, though.

I take breaks nowadays on weekends. When i started out, weekends = work

Sometimes you just have to give yourself a break and tell yourself enough is enough eventhough you enjoy doing it. Your health suffers along with too much work.
