Removing the 1 pixel image from Amazon code

I recently bought a WSO that recommends using Amazon and I'm following his directions to the tee but one thing he has recommended is in order for the Word Press blog to put out a "custom field" they want an affiliate URL. However Amazon affiliate IDs are like Commission Junction, as they have a 1 pixel image attached to them for tracking. The guy who wrote the WSO recommends removing the 1 pixel image in order to get the referral URL in the custom field.

For instance here is my link:
HTML Code:
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002F0O7W?ie=UTF8&tag=beekit4hombre-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0002F0O7W">Click here to find the best price!</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=beekit4hombre-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0002F0O7W" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />
He says it's okay to just use this link:
HTML Code:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002F0O7W?ie=UTF8&tag=beekit4hombre-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0002F0O7W
But I disagree. I think I won't get tracked for sales if I remove the 1 pixel image. What do you guys think?

He is right. You don't need the img.

But Amazon says this on their site (which clarifies nothing):

"If I remove the image tag from Text Links and Basic Display Product Links will the links still work?

I'm definitely no expert in the subject having just started using Amazon a few days ago, but I just take the link so that I can use my own anchor text.

Seems to be tracking okay for me. Obviously it won't track impressions, however.

Have a little faith! I've sold over $200,000 worth of products on Amazon with my tracking links exactly like that and I won't lie to you for any reason.

HAHAA I have all the faith in you Jan. That's why I praised your WSO. I just know that I've made this mistake before with Commission Junction. But okay here goes.....

Commission Junction lets you remove the IMG tag also.

I remove the IMG tag, and I still get my sales credited.

The pixel is for tracking only, sales credit is URL based on affil links (no harm in removing pixel, but you'll miss "impressions" tracking without. (unless u use other tracking). Not the end of the world unless you're a stats junkie

As others have said, removing the pixel image won't affect whether you get credit for sales. Has nothing to do with it. The only thing the pixel is used for is tracking impressions.

The reason Amazon says what they do is because they have no idea of the technical expertise of a given associate. They know if you copy/paste the code they give you, you can track impressions and get credit for sales. If you don't know what you're doing and mess up the link, you could lose out.

They never say "if you can't use an image tag, you are SOL", just contact customer service so they can help you get it right. Contrary to what some people might think, Amazon actually wants their associates to make sales...

I definitely have taken out the image tag and had no trouble with getting credit for sales. However I am currently having another problem with Amazon and that is phantom clicks. Does anyone know any thing about this? I am wondering if I should post a new thread on this subject? any help would be very much appreciated.
