Has Google Killed Linkwheels?

Hey Guys

I heard that Google is now picking up on linkwheels. Can anyone confirm that?

If so, is there a way to create linkwheels now that will not get slapped by Google?

Appreciate responses to this one since I have a huge number of linkwheels I plan to create

Haven't heard about this; and I'd like to know as well since I am in the middle of several linkwheels...

But if your content is good on all your wheel sites, why should they?

cross link. easier, less detectable. If they are not IDing link-wheels now, one never knows when they might. (of course who can tell anything they might do? Lol)

If by a link wheel you mean A->B->C->A kind of thing, they have had the tech to detect it for a long time. The depth of link indirection a search engine can detect is a direct function of the amount of processing time they are prepared to devote to it. Google has a LOT of CPU cycles to waste.

Its all according to who/what you believe. Some say "Yes"... some say "No"... but I have yet to hear from "The Big G" about linkwheels. You may find your answer here:

Are you kidding? They've probably been able to pick up on them since people started using them years ago. I mean how hard would it be for google to figure it out? Yes, even if you don't close the wheel I would imagine it is still pretty obvious.

The questions is how much do they care?

Now that's a novel idea... engaging is case studies and analyzing techniques utilizing test websites. That sounds like something a professional IMer would do.

Killed? I think that might be a little strong.

Any tactic that a) is open to abuse and b) leaves an identifiable footprint is likely to become less effective for the abusers.

There's nothing for Google to "kill" when it comes to interconnected sites. They can't put a large part of their ranking on links and then penalize sites that link to others. If the links have any value at all, and are not obviously link spam, there should be no worry.

On the other hand, Google has said for years that they will try to identify and de-list any site they believe is trying to game the system at the expense of the user experience.

All Google can truly do is to identify Patterns of behavior and smack down anyone who matches a particular pattern...

If your link wheels do not match any obvious patterns, they cannot identify your patterns, let alone shoot you down for using them...

If anything, they are becoming less useful for some marketers... Because when there are 20 or 100 people in a niche using link wheels to influence search rankings, there are still only ten web pages that can be on page one of the search results for the target keyword...

Links wheels will always be useful, provided two criteria are met:

          1. They do not follow any easily identifiable patterns;

          2. They are used for a niche keyword that is not overpopulated by IMers who know what Link Wheels are and use them for their websites...

To a large degree, if Google enters your 'circle of sites' through any door and can't find a natural pattern of links out to other sites that don't lead to your money site you have the possibility of setting off the dreaded 'link wheel buzzer'.

In other words, if Google finds you're really not part of the web in general, but just a closed off corner of the web, they may not allocate prime Google Estate to help you bring in traffic.

This has been going on for years, and if you really want some good information about how this works, guys like Mike Liebner, among many others, have laid this out in spades.

            It's not rocket science...

I think the best analogy is like constellations of stars, with the Net being the entire universe. Are you getting links from the same "constelation" as the other ranking sites for those keywords?

It's pretty easy to figure out where the other links are coming from and copy those patterns, and there's likely a few 2.0 properties in the mix.

Proper use of sites like Hubpages and Squidoo also include optimizing traffic, linking and searches on those sites by making good use of tags, tag pages, etc.

I think it all depends on how well your content is on your sites within the link wheel.
Do the links relate to the theme of each other or are they totally obscured?
Also, do you have other links going to other valued sites that are not part of the link wheel.

Google is placing so much emphasis on unique content and relating linking that if the sites in the link wheel are built properly then there should not be a problem with the structure of the wheel, more importantly is the structure of the sites.

Thank you so much for your feedback on this

It sounds like the general consensus is that provided it has a "natural" type approach with good content and does not all point back to the same site I should be okay.

Are there any marketers you recommend for finding the best in-depth advice on creating great linkwheels?

Apparently closed link wheels doesn't work any more for some markets, whilst still work for another ones. Leaving them open helps to leave less footprint, but they aren't as effective as closed ones. Even if closed work for your market today, maybe they don't tomorrow. This is how our lovely google algorithm rolls

Link Wheels are not dead but you need to exercise caution and creativity when creating them. Don't leave obvious footprints, like linking all the sites to the same URL. Link out to other sites in your market, don't interlink all the wheels and especially don't close the loop. Focus more on getting links to your links to keep them indexed.. If that makes sense..

    My personal experience:
I have created a link wheel about 5 weeks ago, utilizing a few Web 2.0 sites, I think 4 of them, and doing some sort of A -> B -> C -> D -> A... then each of these sites will also have another link links back to the main site.
Well, after 1 month+, no effect at all. What I mean is, my ranking not improved at all. (It's still drop out of the Top 200 of Google Search Result!)

However, one of my friend who implement this strategy got her websites ranking improved... slightly.
