Is it really that much better to use Camtasia instead of Jing Pro?

Just in the middle of recording my first info product and everyone has told me before I should go with Camtasia and nothing but. I can see it's a good program, but it's taking up a lot of memory on my already-taxed computer, and I've always been happy with the free version of Jing, so why not Jing Pro?

It's much cheaper, and they even give you storage space to put your videos online so you don't have to upload them to YouTube or Amazon in order to link to them. Am I missing something or is Jing Pro good enough for the average marketers needs?

Not to mention that the learning curve, no matter how small, of learning a whole new program is slowing down getting this product launch moving. Just curious to hear your thoughts. I'm just using the 30 day trial for Camtasia at the moment.

I use Jing Pro. I don't own Camtasia. For my needs, $15/year (Jing Pro) is plenty. There are lots of more advanced things that Camtasia can do, and there is no time limit on the videos. Jing Pro has a 5-minute limit. But that actually helps me! It forces me to cut fluff and just create videos that are short-and-to-the-point. My coaching students tell me they love the shorter videos, too. Smaller chunks to learn from, which makes sense.

IT all depends on your needs for your business. I try to keep mine as simple (and inexpensive) as possible. If/When I need to step up to Camtasia, I will, but for now Jing Pro is awesome!

robharrisonline - the paid version of Jing will let you record in formats you can upload to Youtube. But if you want to convert the free swf video you can use the iWisoft program (SWF to Video Converter - convert SWF to AVI, FLV, WMV, MOV) - it adds a small watermark. I searched a LOT last week and that's the best version I could find. I've since upgraded to Jing Pro though as it's a great price.

In reply to the OP - I think it all depends on what you need. There is no reason why Jing Pro shouldn't be good enough for you if all you want to do is make videos of less than 5 mins. If you need more effects and editing abilities then Camtasia is certainly more flexible, but it costs a lot more too! Plus I personally agree with John that it's useful to have videos split into short learning chunks.

I'm curious, what prevents you from using Microsoft Movie Maker, or another editor, to combine those 5 minute sections into a longer video if you need a longer one?

I do that all the time with items I create with CamStudio. I create in short chunks because it allows me to eliminate my screw-ups easier, and then put it together to make a final video.

Yeah Camtasia is one of the best and used by most IM online. The reason is the vast advanced features so for this reason I just went with using Camtasia right from the start. It was either learn it now or learn it later for me.

  • Yeah, I'm thinking I might stick with the Camtasia after all primarily just because the editing is so advanced. A bit up in the air still but I'll see how my recording session goes today. Thanks for the input everyone.

The only thing with Camtasia is that you have to make sure your system is up to it - you have to have plenty of RAM and hard drive space, and a fast processor doesn't hurt either, especially when it comes to rendering the videos. Ensuring that your computer is up to the task will make it a lot less frustrating when it comes to recording and editing videos with Camtasia.

    • I think that's where I'm struggling at the moment. My machine is pretty taxed on memory and I'm waiting until after I move to the Philippines in a couple weeks before I buy a new laptop.

I'd ensure you have at least 4Gb of RAM on your laptop, as this will make things much smoother - nothing worse than running out of memory halfway through recording/editing a video!

          James,

Good afternoon on the other side of the world.

I highly recommend Jing Pro if the 5 minute limit works for you. It does for me. I'm into my second year of using it and it has been a game-changer for my online biz.

One thing to check is to make sure that it doesn't start automatically when your computer starts. I only fire it up when I want to use it.

          Hope this helps.

  • Hey Joe--thanks for the input. Got your message the other day, by the way. I don't spend much time on the Skype of phones, but I typically write emails a page or two too long (LOL) so feel free to toss any questions my way about this side of the world. I never fail to answer my emails.

    cheers,
    James

Good point on making sure it doesn't fire up with your computer, by the way--always annoys the hell out of me with the free version.

Yea, for 15 bucks a year, go pro. The one-button upload to YouTube is more than worth that.
