Thats fairly common especially if you are not targeting visitors and going for bulk general traffic.

      Mal,

That figure seems pretty meaningless without knowing WHY people click away.

For example, when I am looking for a particular music video I often click away quickly when it's not the right version/is poor quality/has lyrics or somebody's website name plastered all over it, etc.

On top of that, I was thinking 19.4% was really low when you consider how many crap videos there are.

Throw into the mix the average attention span of people online (9 seconds according to this 2002 study)

BBC News | SCI/TECH | Turning into digital goldfish

      and again 19.4% seems low.

The only figure that really matters is the abandonment rate for your own videos.

That's because everybody sends "Never Gonna Give You Up" when "Together Forever" was clearly the superior song for RickRolling.

What I would like to see is a study that shows the difference in viewing times between videos with visible controls and an indicator of how long the video is, compared to those without.

Of course you would have to take into account the amount of time spent LOOKING for said controls as opposed to active watching.

Either way, my guess is there would be a difference between the two.

    All the best,

Well it's kind of funny that you say that because I was just watching a video - one of those sales ones that have no controls so you have to keep watching to get to what the guy is actually selling.

It started off with the person talking about how they were homeless and then they lasted one day in college - I clicked away after about 15 seconds - it was all about him! I want to hear about me!

The sad thing is that I actually did want to hear about the product (it was something about videos) but I didn't know how long the guy was going to ramble on about himself so I just didn't have the patience to keep listening.

The definition of a song, in its primitive form, is music with words. This doesn't even qualify as a song - so it's basically the worst garbage ever written...

Thanks for helping with the stuck song, Caliban. I'm now listening to Aerosmith and Saga to get it out.

Stuff like that usually gets me to click away ASAP! BTW earlier today a site started playing music, by default. I closed the browser!

The song is called "I Am Very Glad, Because I'm Finally Returning Back Home." He couldn't sing the actual lyrics because they were implicitly critical of the Soviet regime.

I think the song's wonderful. I even bought his album:
