The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet

Here is a very interesting article from Wired.com that I think everyone should read:

The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet | Magazine

How does the evolution of the internet away from the open, free Web (www.) to closed, privatized internet apps influence the internet marketing industry?

    Wired is full of crap.

The web doesn't account for that much traffic because the web is designed to move small quantities of data.

Meanwhile, the large data transfers are happening via BitTorrent and an ever-growing number of proprietary services.

Consider the example of Netflix. A single 90 minute movie is roughly a gig of data. On Hulu, most shows are about 500 MB. Pandora? A four minute song is about 3.5 MB.

The entire sales funnel for my latest product, including all images and pages, is all of 360k.

That's a tenth the size of a single four-minute song. A show on Hulu is 1,500 times as large. A Netflix movie? 3,000 times as large.

If my sales funnel were to represent a quarter of the traffic from one streamed Netflix movie, that would be 750 people visiting every single page of it.

And at reasonable rates for click-thru and conversion, that data is actually about a third of the actual people seeing the front sales page. Over 2,000 people.

Does that sound like the web is dead?

    Dead?

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. If you think it's dead, it's dead for you and maybe for those that think like you. If it's dead, bury it if you can't resurrect it.

If you think it's not dead, so shall it be for you and your likes too.

    Jack,

Just like you said, "Long live the internet". I think it's alive. If it's dead, I will not post here again.

    Again, Long live the internet.
