[GOAL]New college IM'er aspiring to make extra money for Christmas Gifts =)

Hey Warriors,

Another post from me =). I've come to decide that I give a lot of credit to the people in the WSO section, but from browsing the Main Discussion forums, I can see that there is an absolute surplus of experienced help.

Last week was a pretty paramount week. I finally picked something I wanted to do. I made a blog, used it to get approved for an adsense account, and bought a couple of domains to use for redirects to some clickbank offers using some offline marketing techniques. I also tried some adsense facebook marketing.

The only money I have made so far is I got about 3 clicks my first day of launching my College Cooking blog. So, it was a grand total of $3. Not horrible; but I'm kind of at a stand still. I have a lot of ideas out, and I'm intent on figuring out which way to go.

The traffic I have been getting to my College Cooking website has mostly been from my facebook and college friends. I have been getting some great support, from people I barely even talk to. I also have had people want to guest post some of their recipes and whatnot. However, none of them seem to be clicking any adsense links, which I guess is okay. I'm just happy the idea I thought of is getting some praise.

The other two marketing concepts I came up with were one from a WSO I got, and it didn't get me many ad clicks, and not much traffic. These were making blogs and promoting them via facebook groups, etc. I had yet to get any clicks from either of those. I also tried promoting for a few days. Nothing crazy, but just gauging interest.

Finally, I made some domain names, put some redirect links on them, and dropped some flyers around my area. These were for clickbank offers. I only did one round of flyers at a horse betting venue in my area, and didn't get any sales or even one ounce of traffic =/. Then again, I only dropped about 30 flyers. I am thinking that a better way to optimize this is by getting CPA leads instead of ClickBank sales. I feel like lead's are easier to convert. The catch for this one is that I really have not much IM experience, and I am a bit reserved on thinking I'll be getting approved. I do a lot of reading, but it seems that a lot of CPA companies are very picky.

Basically, I have been getting a lot of advice lately, and I'm not sure where to take it. I've also been getting some unrealistic advice which is nice, but surely is not worth the work because I know it won't happen. For instance, until I get a top ranking in google from my Cooking blog, I am almost positive not one of my friends on my list would buy a clickbank or amazon cookbook. My friends are just not like that. Theyre in college, most of them don't have money, and most of them probably would just look for free recipes than pay for them.

I want to utilize internet marketing. I really do. I quit my intense gaming habits, and I'm trying to displace my addiction for gaming into something a lot more useful and productive. Such as this.

Appreciating any and all advice,

-Matthew, College Guru

My advice to you would be not to go the "flyer route" again. You'll just waste money on printing costs. It's very hard to use offline marketing to drive people online in the first place, but flyers typically don't work too tell. Instead, I would focus your efforts on learning SEO and also becoming a master at wordpress. If you know how to build a simple website, and know SEO well you will be leaps and bounds above many other newbies. SEO is my opinion is the best way to get traffic - and it converts the best.

CPA would definitley be the way to go for this and I'm not sure flyers is a bad way to go. A really simple "Win an iPhone" CPA offer printed on a simple flyer and left in the computer suites (if thats what you call them in the US ) could do pretty well, depending on the traffic to that particular block and how hungover the students are I guess...

Have a play with it I like the concept of cooking but students like stuff for free..

    Hi!!

Love the idea of the blog for that niche. Have you thought about your FREE REPORT being something on the lines of "50 Student Meals for under $2" or something like that. If students in the US are anything like the ones in the UK, they're ALWAYS looking for a way to avoid the beans on toast route.

Hope it picks up for you.

    Cheers,

    Newbim.

I really am a bit confused on SEO. Not exactly sure which approach to take. I know that my site has been up for a week, and it still isn't indexed on Google. Not sure why. But If I have any questions I'll be sure to let you know! Thanks!

I guess the flier routine may not work well. I didn't get any sales and spent a bunch of money on making them. I guess if I belonged to a CPA network other than clickbank, the leads might be a bit more viable.

I got your PM, thank you very much for reaching out. Reports might not fly in my College Cooking niche, like I said, not at least until I get outside traffic. My facebook friends are basically my only traffic right now, and trying to sell them something is not very characteristic of me as their friend. I think my biggest challenge is getting my site ranked.

The big accomplishment I made and what makes me happy to think I may be moving in the right direction is that I had some one-on-one discussion with some guru's that helped me in the right direction.

I was able to get accepted to the AdSense program within ours of starting my intention. I think this was a good start. With all of the hype about getting approved to adsense, I got in on my first try.

You could also create a site/blog about gaming. Its a very lucrative niche and you can sell ebooks as well as physical products like consoles and games. Just an idea since you used to be addicted. Either way, its going to take work and focus. Don't get discouraged if you aren't making tons of money in a few weeks. Take small steps and they will soon compound it to big steps...

My college cooking site is off to a good start. Thing is, I'm not very sure about the monetizing capability of it. I added adsense to it, however that's about it. Until I get some outside traffic besides my facebook friends, I don't think I will even get adclicks.

You need to develop a plan for monetization or you will end up working hard without seeing good gains.

To come up with an ideal monetization strategy start thinking about your ideal visitor:
          -Who are they?
          -What do they want?
-How are you going to extract money from them?

I took a look at your blog and it looks like a niche that may be a little hard to start making money with especially just starting out. Are college kids actively looking and willing to pay for solutions regarding food and cooking? In my experience, most of them will just order a pizza...

It will be easier for you to start making money online if you go for a niche where people are fanatical, actively buying products and services, or have a crisis or major problem. That is why I recommended the gaming niche.

You could set up a gaming site that provides tips, tricks, and the latest deals. You could then sell ebooks on specific game cheats as well as information on how to play video games for a living. I have a friend that makes a killing doing this.

I got a lot of information online about starting up your first blog. Keep in mind, this is my first step of many into the IM business. The information I followed online insisted that, if you're not quite sure which blog to create first, create a blog on something you enjoy doing.

To be honest, even before thinking about Internet Marketing, I had wanted to start a blog about food. (I have a dream to be a food critic, or any of those people - like Guy Fieri on Food TV - that travel to try new food).

At this point, I am just trying to find the most efficient way of monetizing a website that is primarily for helping people, and not made ONLY for monetization. I used this blog not only to create an outlet for me to write about food, but it was my first website in which I used to be approved quickly to the AdSense program for.
