Duplicate Content Question With Posting Content From My Blog to Article Directory

I've heard different things about what constitutes dup. content. Some people say it's okay to publish an article on your blog after it's already been published on an article directory. Others say it's okay to publish an article from your blog to an article directory after it's already been published on your blog. Other's say never publish anything from your blog anywhere else... I don't know what's the truth?

I ask because I like the posts I make to my blog and would like to put them on some article directories, as well, to get some extra traffic from them but don't want to get hit by Google. Should I just tweak them a bit before I resubmit? Can someone clarify this for me?

    You won't be penalized for duplicate content by putting the same article on your blog and article directories. Duplicate content, I believe, is only when you have the same article more than once on the same website.

    I prefer to tweak them a little. Not much, just a little. My understanding is that duplicate content matters on your site, not elsewhere, but I still like to make some simple changes.

    a = true
    b= true
    c = urban myth (together with the whole "duplicate content" - a) and b) are syndication and NOT duplicate content!)

    So many people make this much harder to understand than it should be. It's actually pretty simple.

    The duplicate content issue only applies to content on a single site. You get penalized for having the same content multiple times on the same site. You can place the same content on unlimited sites and suffer no penalties, but if you place it on one site on multiple pages then you get the penalty.

    Everyone has their own opinion.

    Mine is that if the content has been indexed first on your site then it is okay to have duplicate content on the web because you already have it indexed as yours first. They cant penalize a page that is constantly getting its content stolen, that would seem wrong.
