Keyword Research... RELOADED

Good morning fellow Warriors.

I must admit to being a tad bit stumped on my keyword research efforts. I've been using the Google Keyword tool for quite a while now, and had always relied on it for my numbers, as my sites seem to rank particularly well within Google.

However, I have recently noticed quite a few individuals claiming that the Google Keyword Tool is not reliable for SEO. Learning this, I decided to do some research of my own. I headed over to the SEO Book tool, as this seems to be one of the favorites from what I'm hearing when it comes to delivering accurate results.

With many many years under my belt within the mortgage and finance industry, I decided to do a comparison:

1 - I searched for mortgage marketing and loan officer training

2 - I then searched for the same using Googles keyword tool

The SEO Book tool showed a total of 13 daily clicks for Mortgage Marketing, and even fewer for Loan Officer Training

Google on the other hand showed 40,000 searches per month for mortgage marketing and 12,000 permonth for loan officer training. Being knee deep within a desperate industry, I can guarantee you that the SEO Tools results do not even approach accuracy.

I have a single that gets around 40 - 50 hits a day that lo's find with the keyword "mortgage marketing." I also personally know the owners of many "loan officer training" businesses ranking in the top 1 - 5 positions, and I can tell you, these guys get a lot of traffic off that keyword, and the battle wouldn't be sever for a term getting 10 - 13 clicks per day.

(Not to mention a group of 280,000 individuals all desperately looking for marketing solutions in this crazy time period would surely amount to more than 13 - 15 clicks per day)

So I'm obviously much more inclined to believe Google rather than the alternative, and would love to get some feedback. Yes, I understand that one muct consider the fact that many long tail keywords would need to be factored as well to get a true glimpse of what sort of traffic is being generated by this group...

But based on my own tracking of how people are finding my blogs and sites, I am outpulling each day what the SEO Book claims... Any feedback as to what is happening here? I do not wish to continue using a tool that is faulty, nor do I wish to make a switch if the alternative is just as faulty....

keyword research tools are just that, tools. they are great for getting a pretty good estimate, but are not 100% accurate.

SEO Book Tool is great as is Google's own keyword tool. The best thing to do is do your own testing and then you can really see how well each keyword is doing.

The best thing about Google's keyword tool is that it's data comes straight from the heart of Google itself. So you are basically seeing what real people are searching in Google currently.

You should also try using Google Trends. It will help you see the search trends for each keyword.

If Google Keyword Tool is not reliable, there's no other tool in the face of the planet that's reliable.

    Simple stats:

Google has a data of nearly 60% of the entire searches made.

While others like wordtracker has only 0.63%.

Get the facts and don't be fooled with all the fancy reporting other tools are offering.

Well so far, I've found Google to be more reliable, but my trouble is I am basing this off of 1 project only. (f my sitesreceived 90% of their business through offline methods and word of mouth/telemarketing)

At this stage, I am close to launching 3 more sites, and I am concerned over all the recent warning posts about how terrible Google Keyword Tool is for SEO. Unfortunately, I've only used it once and hate to put my trust in a one time experience.

Well, at least the joke above got a laugh...

    Your question is:
How many times does the keyword "????" get searched in Google?

    You ask Google
    You ask SEO book (wordtracker)

I'm pretty sure Google has a better idea of how many times a
    keyword is searched.

I only use seo book for keyword research, something to give me
ideas and then I go straight back to Google and check if it's worth
    looking into or not!

    regards,

Right, in theory I agree. But I seem to find a lot of people commenting on the fact that Googles numbers are spread over a network, instead of just local search traffic. So I'm struggling to find some way to get an accurate representation of what I can expect from Google, not from a PPC network.

Looks like my only way out is through experimentation.

When you use the google keyword tool you know that you can
edit where the results are tailored to? It's right above

I just had this discussion last night with someone.

I think many sites are easily averaging about 90% of organic traffic coming from Google.

Immediately it makes me think using Google's keyword tool is a wise idea.

On top of that, I find wordtracker to give strange results. Such as 2669 for the term 'diet'.

2669 daily searches for 'diet'?? Yeah right!

    Google says, 2,740,000/month = approx 90,000/day

    Which seems more accurate?

There's no more accurate than google. Because you're searching from Google

I'm saying this based on my own research.

I top no.1 consistently for a several keywords and I simply compare the number of visitors I'm getting from Google keyword tool.

Take note though, that the number in Google Keyword Tool includes searches from it's partners.

You just have to weed out the search count from search partners and Viola!

    Google. Plain and simple.

They need a tool reliable enough for their Adwords advertisers to use. If it wasn't reliable they would lose a lot of money because they would lose trust.

If you ask me, I am wondering how much data Google is sharing with the other "tools" out there.......

I'm more inclined to trust google, simply because it's calculated from stats on what people are actually searching using google. Yes it's not 100% accurate, but it gives a good indication.

Go with Google, but do some research of your own to determine if you can profit in your chosen niche.
