Question about domain registration

Hi all,

I'm going to be setting up an affiliate site for a niche product that I have found. I am using Jan Roos' guide to setting up a product review site using the amazon affiliate program.

The specific domain name I want is taken, and godaddy suggests a range of alternatives. The keywords I am targeting are "compost bins", and the domains "bestcompostbins.com" and "compostbinsreviews.com" are taken.

My question is: does it matter which of the alternative domains names I register? I can do:

bestcompostbinssite.com
thebestcompostbins.com
bestcompostbinsonline.com

Does it matter which of these I choose?

Thanks!

Not really. Just make sure you pick a .com

DMS, why do you think it's important to pick a .com?

I've had better results with .com domains versus other extensions. Why? I don't know if anyone really knows the answer to this question!

Most people naturally think and type in .com first....that is the only reason I can think of.

I think it depends on whether you want to use the domain as a web property or you want to flip it as a domainer. If you want to have any of them as a web property, then it doesn't matter inasmuch as you are ready to offer fresh, unique and quality content to your site's targeted visitors. So, if you can brand yourself as an authority in that niche through any of them, fine.

Secondly, it depends on how strong the competition in your niche is. If you are not ready to overcome the competition, then even if you have the best of domain names, you will still be overwhelmed.

Selection of domain does matter, but if you don't get one then you can try hard by adding specific keywords to your contents. You can still achieve a good response if you do the SEO job carefully.

    Hi -
Obviously the closer you can get your keyword to match your URL, the better your going to do in the SERP's.

With that said, if your bent on sticking with a .com name then the 3 choices that you have would boil down to your personal preference.

Personally, I've done just as well with .net and .org names as I have with .com's.

bestcompostbins.net and compostbinsreview.net are both available.

    try .org
as google treat them exactly the same way.

ive proven that a gTLD kills .com's and even have noticed that ccTLD's do well also

do a search for 'hd wallpapers' and you will see a .in (not mine)
do a search for '1080p hd wallpapers' and you will see a gTLD (.com.au)

so its all in the way you do your SEO

.com's are still the most prized but many people just park them so they are easy targets to squash if you have the same gTLD/ccTLD.

    I like this one best
    thebestcompostbins.com

Google ignores the word "the" so it's the same as having bestcompostbins.com

But ... I have no problem ranking with .net, .org, and .co
I don't buy .us, .info or any of the other extensions, but net and org are the same as .com if you do the same SEO for them.

If you do not mind the usage of a commercial website for .org (and some people do mind), I also second the suggestion for .org.

You can see Google vs. Bing: Correlation Analysis of Ranking Elements | Trinitude Network and other sites, .org exact match domains are (I think) as good as .com from a pure SEO perspective.

Good luck with your site. I was actually thinking of a compost bin for personal use... they are in a good price range. Hopefully the shipping is not too expensive.
