It still works, but it is very over saturated.

If you find a niche and work with it, you will do well. But it takes a lot of time adding and removing twitter friends, more than it is worth in my opinion.

Twitter marketing is alive and well; however, blatantly using Twitter just to make money and trying to sell (or push) products has not and never will work.

Like Chris stated above Twitter is a great platform to engage customers and potential customers...answer their questions, ask them questions, share info, etc.

As a Twitter business user, I tend to ignore anyone who follows me and has anything related to online market or forex in their profile. Why? Because any moment now, I'll be reading up on affiliate links to the latest and greatest automatic steam of income, or to forex robots guaranteeing gibberish along the lines of 200% return a month with no risk (anyone who believes that is an idiot), or, worse still, inane inspirational ramblings a-la The Secret.

When it comes to Twitter, Internet marketers have dug their own grave.

      Excellent observation, George.

I believe making money on Twitter is almost dead.
Marketing on Twitter has to be done "away" from Twitter
in my opinion... (I have a blog post about it here:
Making Money on Twitter: The Truth Has Tweet)

Twitter can still be used to market but it should be
used on a higher level... to build real relationships with
the MARKETER himself/herself rather than trying to
unload affiliate links unto unsuspecting people... who have
now grown wary of "blind" links.

I remember reading recently that only 20% or so of followers will actual read an individual twit. If you assume a 10% reaction rate (1% is probably more accurate) any individual message will probably receive a 2% response.

Personally I think twitter is a useful means of talking to members to keep them happy or interested (but I wouldn't expect a response) and as a means of discovering what people really think of your company. I think twitter is far better as a feedback loop rather than as a sales mechanism.

That sounds about right. One funny think I found out when doing some testing with twitter was that I was able to generate a lot of hops to affiliate products- but no conversions. So I think it's still a useful means of getting traffic- and you really only need to spend at most, 30 minutes a day doing it.

I HATE Twitter! Even so, I still add it to the marketing plan for my clients to
          build grand awareness.

Otherwise, it's a pain in the a**. Last year it was fun to retweet, ask
questions and have people actually respond. Now nobody responds...or am
          I really that boring?!

Twitter was, and still is, a SOCIAL media site. That means, no selling, NO MARKETING....only building relationships. (Even "Terms of Service" says this)

If more people "get it" then it still can work.

For any social media site to work on behalf of ANY marketer, build relationships on it, then tactfully, and gently, migrate them to your blog or money site....but not until you gain trust and a true relationship.

I have just defined "social media" once and for all

(just for the record, I don't even use Twitter)

If you say it's working, you are RIGHT.

If you say it's not working, you are also RIGHT.

After all, someone said the other day that IM is dead. As if it was not enough, another folk said, the Web is dead.

Nothing is working. Yes, it's true! I agree with you.

Everything is working. Yes, I also agree with you. After all, either way, I have absolutely nothing to lose except the time I spent to reply the post.

Twitter does not work well for mass marketing...

But, it is great for developing relationships...

If you use it as a tool for developing profitable relationships, it could provide a handsome return for your investment...

If you try to mass market there, don't be surprised when it peters out for you...

I use Twitter like a branding tool. I also have a news/local website that pretty well on Twitter. I get more people that follow blogs through Twitter than actually follow my RSS feed. I have some blogs that will post a tweet whenever I create an article, so it gives people a way to keep up to date on what is going on with my website. I'd prefer for them to be on RSS or an email subscription, but I'll take my Twitter followers over nothing at all.

Twitter works, it just depends on how you market yourself or your company. If you spam your followers constantly - then you obviously are doing something wrong. You need to provide quality, and accurate information for the followers to trust you.

Spamming twitter with links does not work anymore, no...
Spamming myspace with links does not work anymore,
Spamming facebook with links does not work anymore,
    ad infinitum...

However, using it as a microblogging platform to build a base of followers who are interested in what you have to SAY does work.

Tactics that early adopters use quickly get saturated, fixed or otherwise ignored eventually - leaving the medium to either decay or revert back to its original purpose.

Correction - twitter probably does work if your followers consist of people who visited your site first and decided to follow you on twitter next. This way, you have a list of related followers who are more likely to read - and therefore retweet - what you have to say.

I guess it also depends a lit on your business - I work in B2B and never really found much use for Twitter (surprisingly people interested in offshore asset protection and tax management do not spend much time tweeting - go figure!)

Funny, I just saw a TV report that says 71% of Twitter users ignore most of the posts.

This means, you have to be really special in some way to get people's attention. Better get to work on building up a good reputation, or gain some type of celebrity status.

Twitter is only useful for branding. And a lot of people aren't power users anyway, which means they post updates on Twitter but they never really use it to interact with other ppl.

Which means Twitter is useless for normal marketers.

Never saw the ROI in it... Even if you pay someone to do it for you, it has always been a marginal return at best. I do see the value of it in making real relationships.

Twitter is a great tool to make yourself available to clients and potential customers, but I don't think people are really interested in being pitched products in 140 characters. My biggest successes with Twitter are all focused on providing people with curated content. Flooding people with links is a turnoff, but a steady trickle of truly interesting material is a great way to build an audience...then again, what medium is that not true for?

I'm definitely interested to see what kind of numbers come out in 2011 about usage, membership and conversion. Twitter's success was largely media and novelty driven...now that the nitrous tank is empty, I'm curious to see if it can maintain it's brain-share in the immediate future(s).
