Which Smart Phone Should I Get For IM?

I am looking to get a smart phone since I am going to be travelling here shortly and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which smart phone to choose. I am thinking of getting the new Droid, Iphone or even the EVO as it's made by HTC and they could have made a better product than the Droid but just less hype because of the whole Google thing associated with Droid plus Droid's marketing is awesome and it makes the Droid look superior to me.

Here's what I'd like to be able to do while on the move.

  • Log into Paypal, send money, issue refunds etc.
  • Send and receive emails
  • Log into Wordpress and make changes
  • Log in and Send emails from Getresponse
  • Skype (communicate with outsourcers)
Everything else I can do from my laptop.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Ps. I've never used a smart phone before so I apologize if this question seems dumb.

That's an issue I've been considering as well. I have finally settled on the Samsung Epic. I know it is available through Sprint, don't know who else, but combined with their "Simply Everything" plan, I think it will be an excellent solution.

Get a notebook - it has a bigger screen and it is better for the eyes if you want to work long time online.

I'm also thinking of just getting an Ipod touch but then I'd have to be in a wifi area. Also, if I go that route I might as well buy an Ipad.

Looks like Apple has a good chance of getting some of my money.

OK so I'm biased and let's get out of the way right now that Apple do NOT do great design - they MAY do great even superb styling but design? ... NO!

Whatever you get re: pad & phone ensure that the following don't apply:

        1. When holding the phone in the left hand it MUST NOT drop signal and disconnect (Oh! That'll be the iPhone then :-( )

        2. When buying a pad it should enable you to EASILY transfer files from virtually ANY media without requiring an arsenal of "special" and "proprietary" connectors. Oh! That'll be the iPad gone then ... I mean you can't just plug a USB stick or drive into it and go. You can't (I'm told) even upload iTunes (though God knows what's wrong with MP3 and Ogg) without using a PC.

Phone: Yeah the Epic definitely as sadly there are few phones that are designed properly for serious use (i.e. those that have a proper keyboard so that you don't lose your screen real estate whilst typing - Duh!)

Unfortunately the Epic is US only (well it won't work in UK/Europe) so UK users will have to wait until early November for the UK version of the HTC Desire Z which like the G1 (HTC Dream) before it DOES have a proper keyboard although the muppets have only provided a four-line keyboard this time instead of the five that you really need to have the special chars for "normal" Linux/Unix usage.

Pad: you want one of these:

The Adam - dubbed the ipad killer -'cos it is - Google for "Notion Ink Adam" or go here Notion Ink - Adam

Blows anything and everything Apple do (ALL versions of iPad) clean out of the water, at less cost ... and if you look hard enough there are more such coming from other sources.

Once again, I claim Apple do NOT do great design - design is about "fitness for purpose" and a phone that cuts out because the external antenna gets shorted by your hand and a pad without even the most rudimentary USB connection as standard, NO SDHC slot, and wait ... Oh yeah! NO multi-tasking - yeah, go figure!!! (& loads of other expected features missing) are just NOT fit for purpose, albeit they may be pretty to look at. Personally, I think the Adam has both great design and great styling - in spades. And as an engineer, and looking at the specs, it makes much more sense and is far better looking than a logo junkie's iPad.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

        Best regards.

I use the EVO 4G, and it does eveything that you've listed above and more. With the bigger screen (4.3"), it just makes it a lot easier to read through regular webpages and view text without having to constantly pinch and zoom so much.

Some people may want a physical keyboard, and in that case I'd recommend the Samsung Epic 4G, which basically has everything the EVO has (its screen is slightly smaller at 4" though) in addition to a slide out keyboard.

I've never had an Android phone but I can tell you the iPhone does every one of the things you mentioned.

I've played with Android based phones before and I believe they are overrated. It's always going to be a second rate operating system, just like Windows is to OSX.

I have to recommend the iPhone if you want it to make calls. 225,000+ apps on the iPhone VS 85,000+ on Android Market Place. Either iPhone or an Android phone will do everything that you are asking for it to do.

If you do not need it to make calls, I would wait till the Samsung Galaxy Tablet is out sometime before Christmas. It has a 7" screen, so not as large as an iPad, but bigger than any phone. It is perfect for carrying around and still easy to read for long periods of time and/or type on the virtual keyboard.

Everything you mentioned can be done on my Droid. I'd never use iPhone because you can't even change a dead battery and when I say I travel with my phone I mean really travel, away from outlets of any kind so I always have a few fully charged batteries with me.

I carry 2 phones and my next one will have a windows operating system. One droid and one Windows. That way I'll be able to do anything.

I will be getting an ipad. Change batteries or not they are just too kool.

I have to admit I'm thinking of getting a droid as well as the iphone I have, to see whats so different. For me the iphones been fine but I am impressed with some of the droids especially the Evo 4G Paulie mentioned. A friend has that and it's a serious piece of kit.

One thing I am thinking Jan, I reckon by the end of this thread, with everyones different opinions, you'll be even less sure what do get!!

      Good Luck!

Sorry to be a bore, but I am an absolute Apple Advocate, so Apple all the way from me.

I love my iphone 32GS, and I can't wait to get ver.4 as the camera is upgraded,
Apple MacBook offers the best stability and security.
Although slightly more expensive Apple are the most intuitive and user friendly,
did I say GO Apple? definitely worth the bucks!

    Droid X

I'm a loving it. It does all that and more and it has Angry Birds too!
Before getting any smartphone, first find out if Angry Birds is supported for that model.
If not, don't even consider it.

My Droid X is my primary Internet connection on my desktop PC. I have the Droid tethered and it works great.

I would say iPad, iPhone or Blackberry Bold.

Having owned all three, I would say they'd all hit your requirements.

I use a BlackBerry Bold 9700. There is a "paypal app" but in recent transactions not all transactions show.. It does however, work very well, for sending money to people, and showing your parents your balance so they will stop telling me to get a job (ok, just that part for me anyway)...

Ha! That's funny cause my parents are supportive but my friends think I am crazy for going the IM route but that's fine. They will never get it anyways and will be happy working 10-12 hours a day for $9 an hour.

We'll see what they have to say when I go travel the world next year

I just acquired the Samsung Galaxy S. Very serious piece of kit with a couple minus points ( the plastic carcass at the back seems a bit weak and no flash or dedicated camera button), but it carries Android 2.1 and enough hardware to upgrade to 2.2 and even 3 without problems.

$ inch screen ( very high quality image) and very easy to navigate. I have the wordpress app, blogger app, skype, fring, paypal... it handles everything just fine.

If you need a ohysical keyboard no matter what I would ask when the Motorola Milestone 2 is out as it seems it´s going to be a very serious competitor to the almighty Blackberry.

I also have the latest Samsung Galaxy - its got a huge screen, similiar weight as the iphone. I use it for my emails, wordpress and skype. Havent used paypal so I can't comment on that.

My family has an iphone and I have also used it for wordpress. From my point of view, the main difference is price and whether you are an "Apple" convert or not. Androids have come a long way.

If you can get both an iPhone and Android, or one or the other and then a tablet computer. If you are serious about mobile this can be an important issue.

People will ask, and you can show them both. A good investment in the long run I think.

        Hey Jan,

I have been using the HTC EVO 4g for over a year and it just rocks. I haven't found anything that it will not do.

Apple fanatics can rave all they want about the iPhone, but I find it funny whenever they mention a 'new' feature because Droid usually already has it.

But hey. To each, his own.

One thing you might want to look into before you buy anything is the real cost and plans when traveling to any country on your itinerary.

I have heard horror stories about people running up thousands of dollars in charges because they had the wrong chip in their phone or they didn't know the rules of the airwaves.

        Cheers!
