Celente - Here's The Problem With The Forum...

I rarely name someone directly in the forum but I'm going to do it now, and I'll try to be gentle with it :-)

The reason I'm doing so is because what the person posted, and said, is part of the problem with spam and various other junk here.

A few moments ago there was an obvious spam post made to the forum. It was gone in seconds, moderated into oblivion by members, but before it vanished Celente made a post to it.

Instead of reporting it and helping out the forum Celente made a post that said something like "go away" and "the forum is going down here lately"...

Instead of taking that effort and complaining about the forum how much better would it have been to simply report it?

You would have actually helped instead of just complain.

Michael Oska, Jeff Henshaw and Kay King thankfully eliminated the post almost as soon as it was posted, by using the power they have on here, the same power you have.

It really gets old when I see that the very people who complain about something to do with the forum NEVER show up as one who reported anything.

I'm not attacking Celente, just using their post as an example. Many other people on here do exactly the same thing Celente did.

If you do report posts and try to help out the forum, trust me I know who you are and I thank you. And one day I will find a way to repay you for that help.

As for the actual reporting system here...

    Does that include reporting threads:

-you think are in the wrong forum?
-that are on a subject already covered in depth in another thread?
    -etc, etc

Basically, what should the reporting icon be used for other than spam. I know I report spam every chance I get here, but are there other uses for the "Report Post" icon?

I do have a question, though. Is the infraction button anonymous?

EDIT: I just read the Sticky. Now I feel like an idiot.

Allen, member moderation is something that most people really don't understand I think.

I've been online since '93 and I have never personally seen another forum that runs off of member moderation so I'm sure that a lot of the newer members may not fully understand how it works here.

There might also be the factor that those of us who have been here for a number of years think of WF as "ours" in the sense that it's kind of like a family to us. We care about the community and go out of our way to help where we can. I know the forum has grown greatly in the least year or so and many current members may not have created that connection yet.

While I've seen it tried, I've never seen it WORK this well before. Usually, the member moderation thing isn't done properly, because it's some hippy-dippy peace and love idea which doesn't leave room for the brutal reality of how people actually behave. You need a sort of balanced notion of "we're all adults here" instead of "we all want one another to be happy."

Seriously, if we make a statement that spam doesn't stand a chance of being on here for as long as a minute, it'll it home and hopefully lessen the amount of spamming on the forum.

The only problem is, as long as these crazy people can outsource it for pennies on the dollar, the only thing we can do is be active and report!

Overall, I think we do a good job at nuking these type of posts.

    Allen,

Thanks for your reply. But just so you know and understand. I was not complaining...or nagging.

Secondly I went to reply and report the post, but by then, the mods had removed this forum post. LOL. All I can say is well done.

I was merely just trying to tell people my feelings and frustration. This place is good, and I have made several thousand dollars from reading and implementing this info.

But I think I did my job, as you said you never post peoples name in here. I am glad you didnt just think of me as another name amongst thousands. I got your attention, and I got alot of others attention in the mean time.

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up, and listening to me. I had to make you aware of these few points as i feel they are important. Keep up the good work and have a great day.

I didn't see the post Celente replied to, but I've seen it happen numerous times. Trouble is when you see a thread title and you think it might be spam, but then you see someone has replied, (especially if that reply is from a name you recognize), you go check it out. More views for the spammer!

I know sometimes it's tempting to try and explain to the spammers what they're doing, but they'll get the message much quicker if you just report them and have their crap disappear. If they don't, they'll at least move on and find another place to pollute.

I've always wondered how many people reporting it took to send a post into the moderation queue.

Quite a bit fewer than I guessed.

I think I remember Paul mentioning that it depends on who reports it as well. As in, it doesn't take as many trusted members (senior?) to send a thread into mod queue as it does for newer members.

        Allen,

Anything wrong with reporting the post AND posting an educational (but obviously very ephemeral ) comment along the lines of "This thread is probably going to get zapped because . . ."

It might prevent a few people going the "Why was my thread deleted?" route and give newer members reading the thread an idea about what is acceptable here.

I cannot imagine that would be a problem, especially if you call it right... Your smart ass, clever or educational answer will be deleted too, when the thread gets deleted...

It is good to keep two golden rules in mind when replying to forum posts:

#1: Posting any sort of a reply to a spammer is counter productive because it is 99.9% sure they'll never see the reply.

#2: Posting any sort of reply to an idiot is counter productive because you'll just get sucked into a circular illogical argument that will drive you crazy.

Both options steal time away from you that could be used to far better purpose.

I also use it to report posts that are obviously only written as self-promo, posts complaining about their threads being deleted, posts that contain a huge amount of copy and pasted material from someone else's site, things like that.

And trust me ... the infraction button is not anonymous.

Some people use it because they are mad at you. I had a jerk issue two infractions to me yesterday because I tried to explain the deleted thread syndrome to him. I didn't have to take time out to try to explain it to him, but I did and it pissed him off.

See above response, but also ... occasionally I am tempted to post a one-liner just before I hit the report button.

Example: an obvious spammer post obvious spam.
I posted: I do not like green eggs and spam. I do not like them Sam I am.

I always report blatant and shameless posts as spam, and if it looks like a newer member who just doesn't know what they're doing, I consider adding an infraction instead. Is this the right way to use each button?

If Allen doesn't mind, I'll add something else.

People who quote a spammer's message part way through a thread - whilst realising the poster is a spammer.

The spammer, plus post, get zapped - but the following post, with quote, remains.

I've politely pointed this out to people a few times - don't quote a spammer, just report them.

I am glad now that this has been bought to light.

From all these replies, it is obvious that allen needed to see this too. Some members are even unsure on what or how to use the infaction and report buttons. So I guess we are all getting something out of this little thread.
