Any Ideas on Putting Together a Comparison Shopping Site?

Dear Warriors,

I am trying to put together a site where visitors can do comparison shopping and need some help with the right ways and/or tools to use to make it happen.

Here's the concept that I have:

1. A customer visits my site (which focuses on selling X, Y and Z products.) They search for product X by entering it into the search box on my site and hitting the "Search" button.

2. The site searches Amazon, eBay and other sites selling Product X.

3. The sites brings back search results of Product X from Amazon, eBay and the other shopping sites. The search results includes the name of the product, an image, product price (for each of Amazon, eBay and others), an affiliate link to the source site (Amazon, etc); and tabulates them.

If I wasn't clear enough, please, do not hesitate to ask for clarifications.

I have been searching around for some way, script or tool to use in making this functional, but have not found any as of yet.

I would really appreciate your suggestions and ideas on resources or tools to use for this.

Thank you and do have a great weekend.

~Muhammad

I have a buddy who tried to create a comparison shopping site about a year ago. He's a pro. Had a big ecommerce site that ranked #1 for major keywords, etc... Knows his stuff. He sold his ecommerce site and tried to build the comparison site. He couldnt make it work. Too many products and too spread out to make real inroads into ranking. He built it up to 5 or 6 thousand uniques a day and was making decent money, but only about 3 or 4k a month... He spent over 30k on it and finally gave up. Not trying to discourage you, but its a tough nut as the content is sooo spread out.

I know of a guy who does custom comparison software.

The one I have seen is for 11 campervan hire companies compared.

      The searcher has choices of...

when to pick up where to drop of
      locations
      how many people
      price, company, all
      manual auto
      petrol, diesel
      insurance
      extras
      ferry booking
description and look inside each camper
      prices
      payment
      contact form

Not sure how many items in a catagory you are targeting though.

      All the best,
      Ewen

Kevin and Ewen, thank you both for the pointers and input. I'll take those into consideration as I proceed.

Does anyone else have any other ideas for tools or resources to create a comparison shopping site? Thanks in advance.

      Hi Muhammad,

How many products are you planning to compare?

The reason I ask is, it becomes more difficult to rank in search engines when you don't have a clear plan to rank for a keyphrase.

An example might be you go after baby cots. Baby cots would have dozens of options which can be compared.

I'm thinking for SEO and free traffic to your website/websites will benefit from a norrow focus, then you repeat it into another product line.

      Does this make sense?

      All the best,
      Ewen
