Another question for this great forum. I would like to know how I transfer my website to someone else if I sell it. I understand how the domain name trnsfer part goes but what I'm unclear about is how to transfer the actual website itself. Is this something very hard to do? I would really like to know how exactly this is done. Thanks very much

    Quite simple, actually.

    1) Copy all your HTML files of your website and download to a place (folder) on your hard drive.
    2) Get the login info to the other person's FTP account. (their webhost)
    3) Login to the other person's webhost account and simply upload (from your hard drive) the complete HTML files to the master HTML folder.

It shouldn't be any more difficult than that....

    Hope that helps...

In the case that you don't know the person and their info, would the routine be to import all the html files into a folder and send them the folder for them to put it on their hosting account?

If your site and their site uses cPanel, their webhost should be able to transfer the content, stats, databases, etc. quite easily.

Thank you for letting me know this. I did not know that this is possible through cpanel. That would definately make things a lot easier.

It also depends on whether it is a html site or a Wordpress site. The instructions above by Netkid I believe are for a html site - is your site html or Wordpress?

Well now that I think of it, I have other wordpress sites as well. So while we are on the topic, how would I transfer a wordpress site?

With a html website it´s easier, just download all the files via FTP to your harddisk, then send it by email.

A wordpress site is a little bit more work. You have to copy the files as well plus you have to log in to your database with phpmyadmin and make a SQL Dump. Then you have to send these files to the buyer and he has to upload and import all files plus eventually some server specific changes.

For site flipping I recommend html-websites, as it is easier and you can sell to Newbies too.

Instructions for transferring a wordpress blog are here
      http://domainingdiva.com/transfer.pdf

An html site is easy. Just zip up all the current files and give them a link to the zip file. If you have cpanel hosting, just go into the file manager and choose Select All and then uncheck any folders you don't want to transfer, like cgi-bin and then choose Compress from the menu and it will zip it up. Then give them the url to the zip file. They can unzip it to their hard drive and upload or they can upload the zip to their root directory and choose Extract from the file manager menu and they should be good to go.

I normally get their cpanel info and just install the site for them if they allow it. Good customer service and prevents any problems from people who have little technical knowledge.

Thanks guys. Ya I was thinking about just getting their cpanel info and doing it all myself. It would be much faster, less trouble for the both of us and a good selling point to newbies who don't know how to do it. Tell them I will do the setup for them and they will be even more intrigued to buy as well.
