I know there has to be some TED.com fans around here. I just watched this talk by Melinda Gates (Bill Gates' wife) and found the part about Coca-Cola utterly fascinating. Fast forward to 2:40 past the fluff.

Not too much. I mainly enjoyed the specific part about Coca-Cola though.

mmm, that's not what she said.

She said the guys Coke propped up to start simple distribution businesses with guys going around with wheel barrows and push carts selling coke to people on the street, etc. And she said that THOSE micro distributors accounted for 90% of Coke's sales IN Uganda and Tanzania only. In those countries only, not the entire globe.

Think about it. Coke is sold all over the world, in huge, huge countries not in Africa. No way could those 2 countries account for 90% of global Coke sales.

        Nice name.

I thought the exact same thing when I listened the first time. I had to rewind it and do a double take.

@JoshuaG - actually what she said was that the local micro distribution sellers (the ones who sell from bikes, cart, etc.) account for 90% of Coke sold in Uganda and Tanzania, not global sales. If Uganda and Tanzania accounted for 90% of Coke's global sales, hell, I would open a soda business there.

Yeah lets load up 3rd world countries with Coca Cola products which are full of artificial sweeteners, then in about 5 years we can sell them drugs to help with the side effects of those sweeteners. LOL... Just like right here at home...
