One of my websites is a news site covering unconventional news.
One day I wrote an article about a subject and just left it on my blog. A few days later, lo and behold, a major newspaper from a foreign country posted my article on the front page of their website and newspaper! I had a massive spike in traffic that lasted days on end. I hadn't optimized my site for marketing other than some adsense stuff but it taught me a good lesson.
The architecture of the traffic was the main newspaper's site and the umpteen other websites that had linked to their sites and produced blogs. Next thing I know my article was all over the place in that particular demographic.
This has happened a couple of times and it wasn't until I was surfing Warrior that I realize now what to do next time. I get alot of feeds from that particular blog but it's news not for product selling, however the structure of what happened says to me by tweaking it for marketing I can do well. Every once in a while that news story will appear on someone else's top blog or that country's news service will resurrect that story when the topic is in front of the news.
So what I'm finding is if you write an article that is about a specific country and how they're handling a situation and the 'approach' is one that focuses primarily, not on criticizing that country, BUT, how that country is handling that particular problem, the article will get picked up.
Now I'm going to focus on the recreational angle. See if that gets picked up. Will have to use another site for it topic-wise but it's worth the experiment.
Do not underestimate the power of the news wires. I repeat, do not underestimate the power of the news wires especially nowadays as we have so many blogs out there pulling feeds from the news sites and other news blogs. A well written article, I repeat, well written, can end up all over the place and get you tons of fan emails and repeat postings.
I worked in the news business way before the rest of the world had the internet and we had our own versions of the internet. Nowadays the reach of the news wires can be so rapid as to boggle the mind.
In my case since I had a long history of working in the news my article got picked up but that doesn't mean yours won't. A straightforward news site that just reports on current and topical events may well prove efficacious to your pursuits as long as you keep it straightforward and professional.
I've got many friends with news sites. Some of the biggest sites on the web. Just one article they post will literally kill your server. I don't abuse the privilege but I'm now seeing the marketing potential. Wish I'd known that before. Just think, two of my pals have sites that if you appear on their radio shows or have a link on their front pages, you run the high risk of getting over 200,000 hits a minute or more. When we book guests for their shows who have books those books shoot to the top of Amazon in a matter of minutes.
I don't know how many of you utilize the news media but being news media friendly is a plus side. I'll have to study more here at Warrior to see how to utilize it wisely and responsibly.
I know just studying here will be a big boost no matter what.
