Wierd domain names for promotion purposes

Hi!

I'm going to register "keyword-correct" domains to create blogs for promo purposes.

Does using rare extensions like .name, .bz, .ws, .tl, .ac and others influence ranking adversely in comparison with .com?

For example, for 2 sites with 100% identical content: rentacar.com - gives you #1, but rentacar.name - gives you #1000?

Expert / experience view needed!!

Thanks!
S.

It's not really possible to add anything constructive to post #5 of this thread from yesterday which is a very succinct and 100% accurate summary of the situation. (Though doubtless many will try! ). You may find the whole thread an interesting read.

Thanks for the link! I've just read it.
It _seems_ from few posts like .info (and the likes) are worse than .coms... But are more are extensions mean even worse results?

You READ the thread? Or you "skimmed" the thread? Your comment tells me you did not read it completely.

.info is no better or no worse than any other extension, the same with the others. Go read the thread again.

          Hey, man, be polite.

Have you READ the posts by 5 (FIVE) users:
          rosetrees
          miafawlos
          Chris30K
          tmauto
          cma01
          ?

          Or just "skimmed" them?

          They've done some testing.
          Have YOU done testing?

          Btw.
The author (fated82) asked about .info ONLY and got the answers related to .info ONLY (although some mentioned .org and .net).

I was asking about everything else, but .info. Rare.
.Info, .net and .org are not rare. Right?

Really? .gov is no better than .info? Sure?

            Yes, sure.

You're still confusing cause and effect.

Very many .gov sites are also authority sites, and those rank very highly. They don't rank highly "because they're .gov sites". If you build an authority site of the same quality and "authority" on a .info domain, it'll rank just as well.

Alexa, I see the light... Thank you

But (my perplexed face here), what about those poor souls, who had experimented with .info/.com switch-eness and found .coms to be more effective?

There aren't many of them. Most of them are just pretending to have tested, but are actually just repeating what everyone else says, imagining that it "must" be true if it's what everyone's saying. That's how myths get perpetuated. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. My own main site, on the other hand, is a .info one, which I prefer (I also own the .com, just to make sure nobody else does, but the .info suits my purposes better).

Yes, it seems that way; but it isn't.

It seems so because so many internet marketers believe that .info domains are harder to rank, or take longer, or whatever, so when they're using a domain for which they want the best SEO, they choose not to use a .info one. And the inescapable result? Lo and behold: their .info domains don't rank so highly!

        Correlation is not causation.

It's an urban myth of internet marketing - a self-fulfilling prophecy because people use other domain-names when they want to rank easily.

Easy to look at effect and assume that it's cause!
