What are you using for analytics?

INTERNET MARKETING

I have been using Google Analytics and sometimes Statcounter for the last year or two. However, I now have a couple of sites that get several hundred to over 1,000 daily visitors. Because of that, I need a really good Statcounter that I can get up to the minute info. For instance, if I post something then I want to be able to see (in real time if possible) how much traffic that post is getting.

I have thought about upgrading Statcounter since you only get 500 entries, but I am not sure if the upgrade will be overly helpful either.

Advice?

  I like google analytics my self however I have begun to notice it does not track all the hits my sites really get. So I started using Expo-Max Free Site Statistics and Affordable Advertising it doesnt have an up to the minute but you can track the traffic by the hour which is great something you can not do at al with google analytics.

Google Analytics uses Javascript so it will always under report visits compared to your server logs.

You need to ask yourself what your getting from your Analytics?

You should be making business decisions with the data that you collect over time - not sitting there pressing f5 counting "hits".

Alex- This is a different situation. I own 2 Google News sites so it is vital that I know up to the minute counts so I can decide what stories are "hot" and need more attention. Not the same thing as my normal niche sites where I can just look at my stats weekly or monthly since the news moves at a rapid pace.

Petevamp- Thanks. I will definitely look into that one since I have not heard of it before. That sounds good as even hourly will help. During the holidays when I am writing a lot about certain products, I want to make sure I am focusing my time wisely on those that are generating a lot of interest.

I'm using Piwik - it's a PHP script that runs on your own hosting... I have one domain name that I've dedicated to my Piwik install, and I view the stats of my sites there...

I am using sitemeter on a couple of my sites. You can look and see who is on your site in real time. It will tell you how many visitors are currently on your site, how they got there, where they are from geographically, and their ISP w/ IP info.

I'd still stick with Google analytics, but I guess I don't understand your need for up to minute stats. Not sure that's giving you good feedback to base decisions off of...?

  Julie- When you have a Google News site, you can post an article that can give you thousands of hits within hours. Therefore, I need to look at my stats on a consistent basis to see what my readers are most interested in that day. It's a news business which is quite different from a normal website. By the time I look at stats 24 hours later, I have missed the opportunity to get more views. Therefore, faster stats are needed.

Google Analytics is a good tool for this job.
I use it all the time and I'm very satisfied.
