Security On Order Pages - Do You Look?

Hi Guys,

Need your opinion on something. Here's the situation:

I'm hosting a seminar next month (see my sig). The domain I'm using is just masking where the web page is actually hosted. So when you click the "Click Here To Reserve Your Seat Now" link you get taken to the payment processor but in the address bar it still reads as "My Seminar Domain.co.uk".

So when potential seminar attendees go to buy their seat they won't see things like the "padlock" or "https" and might assume that the page is not secure when in fact it really is.

I just had one person buy their ticket and then call me to tell me about this and said that he wouldn't have bought his ticket but because he knew me he did it anyway.

But my question is do you think I've lost out on sales because of this? If so, how bad do you think the damage is? Do you look for security features on order pages?

Thanks,

Brian

PS. Lesson learned - I'm never going to mask a domain again and I'm about to switch the web site over to it's own hosted space.

    Hi Brian,

I think you might lose sales.

People don't trust the internet very much. Those who are aware that browser and address line show security level are likely to be suspicious.

There may be differences depending on the niche and how internet savvy your target group is.

I do realize when a purchase page does not have the usual security and I have skipped sales I'd have made otherwise.

    Brian,

Yes I think this would put me off at the price point that you're selling at.

I always look for the https when making a purchase. I think that some of the newer browsers even put up a warning to users if they enter a purchase without the https.

    I would change it
Why take the chance of putting someone off because the page doesn't show secure?

I look for a site to be secure when ordering. I'm sure there are plenty of others out there who do the same thing.

The security of site depends on who reffered me to it. if you know the soruce I rarely pay any attention to the security. If it is raw traffic you are getting then it will definitely matter.

Would stop me dead in my tracks unless you were a neighbor (in which case I'd walk cash over to you rather than use an insecure payment option).

    You are losing sales. Promise.

  • I'm sorry , but reading your words more made me think that this post is really an ad to get people to sign up and pay money.
I'm not sure this is what you planned on doing, just how it reads to me, I was just wondering?

I noticed your order link is actually sending to a http://www.... NOT a httpS://.... Unless the justgiving website does a redirect to the https, the order page isn't secure at all.

I would also just send them to the page and don't worry about the domain in the address bar. It doesn't really matter at that point anyways.

I do a lot of ordering online and checking for that "s" is the first thing I do, plug how the web site looks would be second on my list. Some web sites turn me off before I have to worry about the "s". Just my feelings...

  • Because the URL is masked I don't even see the little lock box at the bottom... I'm not as leery about internet security, but maybe I should be... Then again I don't have a credit card and only use paypal, so I just look for the telltale signs from them. Shmeh.

I think you're losing sales. Drop the masking, use a direct link. Just my 2c.

Absolutely. I would never order without the security.

if you know the soruce I rarely pay any attention to the security
You really should, without it, you're giving your CC info to anybody that can intercept it with a packet sniffer and there are people out there that live for that.

Your credit card information leaves your computer and travels a long ways passing through other systems along the route.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your thoughts, like I said lesson learnt - today the site will be changed.

BTW - Cash Blasters Online - this is def not an ad - may be I'm used to writing in a certain way but affiliates use domain forwarding and masking all the time I thought it would be useful to share my experience with Warriors so that others don't make the same mistake.

    Until next time,

    Brian
