"Client Transfer Prohibited" on WhoIs Search?

What does it mean when you do a WhoIs search for a domain name and it says "CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED?" It appears they are up to date on their fees...Can anyone clue me in?

I'm also curious with this. I've seen this several times where the data isn't transferred at all. Usually if it's whois guard you still see details.

It means that the person with the domain needs to 'unlock' it from within their account to enable a transfer request to be processed.

It could be the above, or it could be this... When you buy a domain name, for the first 60 days it is locked into the registrar you bought it from. So, for 60 days, transfer to another registrar is prohibited. After those 60 days you can transfer it to a new domain registrar. Hope that helps.

Good point Ruth - I missed that. A similar restriction also applies when the domain is nearing renewal and it requires the renewal to be paid before it can be moved.
