When should you start marketing Christmas products?

Hey everyone,

This is the first time I'm going to market a Christmas product and I was wondering when would be the best time to start marketing it?

Before December/last week of November or Now?

Would really appreciate any suggestions!

Thank you,
Lakshmi

Walmart started putting Christmas stuff out the day after Halloween.

      Damn, what happened to Thanksgiving?

My wife is a Gem Shopping Network addict, and I saw yesterday they were selling Christmas stuff already.

I just remembered seeing a Kmart ad on TV this morning aimed at Christmas shoppers. My grandkids were drooling over a Christmas toys catalog from Target the other day.

I did market research on certain holidays.
For Christmas this is what I found.

Based on search trends from last year

People started searching Christmas July 29
The first big climb in search requests started Oct 21
The search peak happened Dec 16

Based on the above information this is my plan for a Christmas related site.
Any site specific to Christmas needs to be built and indexed by July 1 - preferably April 1 (to allow for linking and complete indexing)
All Christmas related products need to be available on the site by Oct 15 (affiliate links in place plus what ever you sell Christmas related)

I can expect Christmas related orders and traffic anytime between Oct 15 and Dec 16
I'm going to warn my clients that physical products ordered after Dec 16 are not guaranteed to arrive for Christmas (with physical products you have to do that - people will order on Dec 22 and expect to have it in their hands Dec 23 or you become the bad guy)
You need to take into consideration the weather around the country and the fact that all shipping services are 10X busier at Christmas than any other time of year.

My research showed a steep decline in Christmas related search after Dec 16 of last year.

Obviously these are stats from 2007 but the best indicator of future behavior is a buyers past behaviour.

Therefore you need to be doing all your heavy marketing right now.

I'm processing Christmas orders already and due to the economy they started right after the election (so its late this year)

    Hope that helps

We do 70% of our years business in the run up to Christmas and our rush has already started.

However for us the peak weeks are the last week of November and the first 15 days of December. We sell toys and games

    Good luck

I have a friend who started marketing his Christmas products when "ber" months started. But I think that's a tad bit too early. I'd say late October, early November would be good..

NOW! you should start now because the day after thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year.

so if you put them out now you could already have your name out there and maybe a few sales, so when black friday comes around you will be ahead of the game, and ready to see an explosion of sales.
