Hosting over 200 Sites On Same Account?

If you had over 200 sites would you host them all on one account and also buy the domain names through one account or would you spread them over a few accounts in case The big G tries their shenanigans?

Cheers

Hell no, thats crazy. I would say max 20/30 sites for each account.
I have hostgator and hostmonster so will intend to spread it across.

Am not too worried about hosting all the domains in one place.
Name.com seems fine and doesn't seem try to upsell you like godaddy does.

Gotta spread your tracks to build a "sustainable" niche marketing business. Sustainable in the sense that if you build 100's then the few that drop will still keep you in pocket.

Cool, I'll get a few hosting accounts and I think I'll spread the domain registrars out too.

      Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't do that even if I wasn't thinking about Google doing something mean.

    Thinking of nightmares:

    1. Your server burns up and goes to server heaven.
    2. The service provider becomes a target for a dos attack and your it.
    3. Your dns merged with a big corporate entity and loses your records and doesn't trust your records. And, btw, whois is not a viable resource.

Point is you have less control over things that go "bleep" in the night.

Using one account for 200 sites? It sounds good but, screams...Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Where have I heard that echo before?

Yeah, definitely don't want to put all of them on one account. 200? That's a bunch! I'd say 5 or 6 accounts.

Ummm... no. That's just asking for trouble. As Debra said, one catastrophe could wipe out your entire business.

To be honest, its just not about Google figuring out what you're doing. Think about servers going down etc. If the data centre goes down (which is unlikely) then you can only imagine what will happen.

I'm just imagining I'm a millionaire, no way will I put all of it in the same bank. Gotta spread the risk. Diversification is everything in business.

I'd split 200 into at least 3 hosts and 2 registrars:

    example...
    Hostgator
    Hostmonster
    Hostica
    Rollerhosting
    Liquidweb
    Dreamhost
    ---
    Namecheap
    Name
    Godaddy

If a host goes down for any reason, you'll still have 130+ still up and running.

That's what I think I'm going to do. Thanks man.

I'd probably spread it out between about 50 sites per VPS server just incase your servier goes down you don't want all 200 sites down at the same time. You might also want an extra ip for those extra special sites that make you good money.

AS for domain names the saying don't put all your eggs in one basket. If you;re purchasing this much domain names stick with a reputable and trusted one.

All the Best. Wish I had 200 sites lol

    You've heard it before.

NEVER put all your eggs in one basket.

And unfortunately, I had to pay a hefty price for not listening. Lesson learned and definitely remembered.

What happened? I'd be interested to hear the details of this if they're not too painful or confidential.

Well, 200 websites on one shared hosting account is NOT good at all.

Most of the hosting companies out there are somewhat not reliable in terms of the speed and backup. I have tried hostgator, ipage, and hostmonster. None of them is satisfying.

The only hosting company I have right now is InMotion. They are very reliable and supportive. You might want to check it out.

I have 383 websites up and running right now with no problem.

Well, in addition to my dedicated servers, I do
have hosting accounts that I feel comfortable
putting up to 1000 domains on. As long as
they backed up, and not cross linked, I don't
think that it makes a difference.

I am talking about very light accounts that take
up very little server space, and very little
    bandwidth.

It really depends upon the purpose of the
    accounts.

Incidentally, I pay as little as 10 cents per
domain for my hosting at the company I use,
one of the reasons that I do stick so many
unrelated sites on the same server.

You can normally hold 200 sites on power VPS or dedicated. However for shared packages it sounds too much and risky

Notwithstanding what Willie has said in his post above. For the 'small guy or girl' Never host your domain name with the same company that provides your hosting. If you do and you get into a dispute with either one (usually the web hosting provider) then you are 'stuffed' for want of a better word, as they control all of your business related to either or both your domain name and your website.

As an aside, always back up your websites independently, regardless of what your host provides.

As for hosting 200 sites with one account, if they are your bread and butter, then even if you have a dedicated hosting account with full back up, I would still spread a few elsewhere, just to be on the safe side.

    Just my thoughts,

    Jeff.

Don't event try to risk it. We advise our clients to keep atleast 10 per account. Too much weight can pull your work down.
