Outsourcing vs Doing it Yourself

"You should never hire anyone for something you haven't first struggled to do on your own."

This is what I did with my offline business. I started by doing everything myself and now I mainly just do project management. I am having a harder time doing everything myself with my online business.

I have the funds to outsource every part of my online business but feel that I should at least attempt to do everything myself once. Am I going at it the wrong way?

    I agree...somewhat

It is much easier to outsource those things you know how to do. And it only makes sense to do that. I also believe you can outsource things you have no interest in doing or learning. The key is to find someone you can trust and work well with. The ultimate key to outsourcing is finding people you can have a long term business relationship with.

I have never done programming and I would never struggle to do it on my own. Why spend countless hours when I can hire someone who is a better programmer than I am?

I struggled to do everything. Then one morning I woke up and worked out the cost of me struggling versus paying someone! Now I outsource the things that I hate doing (graphics for one!) and I have time to do the things that I like. Plus, I have to admit the outsourcers for my graphics do a way better job in less time than I would ever be able to do.

Well there are two things that I won't attempt to do myself and that is programming and graphics. I am doing my own product creation, keyword reseatch, article writing, blogging, and even copywriting myself.

I'd be very careful tapping into the natural gas line of your home to feed your new outdoor gas BBQ if you haven't done it before.

Some things are better left to pay experts to do it right, the first time so you can focus on your expertise without sacrificing your time management to learn new skills.

Jack of all trades, Master of None Syndrome surfaces if you try to do everything yourself which ultimately affects time, costs and quality.

To your point, if you've mastered a skill/task then document it in the most minute way so it can be outsourced or even automated to free up some time to focus on the next task to outsource/automate.

If you have the money to outsource it and the task is time consuming - outsource it. In theory, you will be spending much more money spending all your time doing a task you could have had someone else do in a few minutes while you focused your attention elsewhere.

However, it depends on how big your business currently is and what tasks you need to have done on a regular basis. If its a lot of content creation or tedious repetetive tasks, usually outsourcing it is the best idea.

I think it was Ford who said something along the lines of him not having to be overly smart or have knowledge because he could call in any one of his consultants/advisers to get the information and answers (aka work) needed.

And now that I've jumbled that all up, essentially I'm saying: You'll get a lot farther a lot faster by hiring people who already have the skills and knowledge.

The best business is one other people and systems work in to make you money.

If you have a strong suit then stick to it.

There's no sense in learning the basics like site design and programming if you can just hire someone to do it.

You should know enough of what to look for so you can easily know what needs to be improved if need be.

Research anything you are not familiar with to the point where you are expert enough to know what you are talking about and you will be able to sort through those providers that bid on your project.

While outsourcing tasks that you are not competent at
    doing is vital.

It is also vital that you also outsource the time-consuming
tasks that you can hire someone else to do at a lower
cost. Because your time is money.

I am also pro outsourcing. I think I'm better off hiring someone who can do a certain task at a fraction of the time, not to mention with better quality and efficiency. This is usually true with programming stuffs, but of course I should have an understanding of the task at least to certain extent..

Hmmm...I'd probably still be stuck in 2002 trying to install and customize my first phpbb forum. :-(

To outsource, you need to know what you want, not necessarily how to do it. Not knowing what they want is where people often fail with outsourcing. You can't outsource without a clear vision of what you want the outcome to be.

For example, I hire a graphic designer to make a logo. All I need is some idea of what I want the logo to look like and to be able to critically evaluate the finished product from the designer, so I get the best logo possible for my needs. I don't need to know how the logo was put together as it has no effect on the outcome whatsoever.

Your aim to do do things yourself would have helped you to gain experience in this line. You have to assess if you will be able to do everything yourself. There is nothing wrong if you outsource your work to some extent at least which will make you concentrate more on your work and also give quality output to whatever you do. And this will help you go higher in your business.

There are certain things that I don't struggle to do, but I don't particularly like doing, so I outsource them as much as possible.

There are also things that I would never even try, like creating professional ebook covers or graphics, so I have outsourced these from the start.

    Cheers,
    Suzanne

I don't outsource much (although I'm not opposed to it by any means). However, I do automate wherever possible, and part of tackling any new procedure is teaching my computer how to do it for me or finding software that's already been written to manage the task. While I'm working on the stuff my computer can't do, it's often working on the stuff that it can. Indeed, it's not unusual for it to be knocking itself out while I'm doing nothing but getting all the credit for it

Not outsourcing to others needn't mean doing it all yourself.

I believe I should have a strong understanding of everything in my business before I outsource anything.

I outsource a ton of data entry, but first I did it all myself, then I built a system that made me faster, then I outsourced the work so other people can just use my system. I understand what they are doing and how long it should take, but I'm not doing the work myself. I can get more data entry done in a day now than I could by myself in a month. But I also know when someone is doing crap work, or taking too long to get things done.

Outsourcing or insourcing(hiring employees) is one of the quickest ways to increase your time and your profits.

When you can train someone to do repetitive tasks that aren't critical to making money you free yourself up to develop new systems and strategies that will make you money.

    Both is useful...

    Depending on many things.
For example, if you are publishing articles online, it will be wise to have a access to a lot of PLR articles that you can rewrite to add you special touch.

Generally, i use it mixed method (like my previous example)

Okay speaking from personal experience I say outsource most of your online business. I have found this to be an efficient way to be able to spend my time Product Creation Thinking and Researching. Of course if your just starting out I would recommend outsourcing Graphics and web design duties, these give me the bigest headaches.

Also depending on what Niche you are in you can train your outsource team to become extremely effective in helping you to Dominate that Niche. I have went the one man team road for long time, no thanks!

Here's my thoughts on it all.

Feel free to try and do everything yourself but you'll have wasted a lot of time and energy if you fail to do it. Outsource things to the experts and this problem will cease.

BUT, on the other hand - if you outsource everything, you might never be happy with it. I'm a VERY picky person and regularly go through a few different versions of everything that I outsource.

When you're new and with a low budget outsourcing is never an option and you do everything yourself whether you liked it or now. When you progress over time and with a little money to spare, outsourcing is a good option. It leaves you plenty of time to do other important stuff, stuff that gets your business going. But the key is to find people who you can trust to outsource the job to.

I'm pretty sure I want to keep the harder stuff to myself as that's the stuff that needs the quality control.

As for the easy stuff, if it's mundane then I want it outsourced

I think outsourcing is a great thing to do but I haven't tried it because I am a ASP.NET programmer and graphics and animations designer myself.

I still would wanna give it a try because I don't have enough time to keep up with school and developing or designing.
