    If you're a beginner

Start with affiliate marketing, subscribe to the newsletters of the vendors
    Study their emails and pages

    Then create your own product

Affiliate Marketing is the best place to begin out if you're just starting out.
Eventually you'll develop your own system of how you do things. That's when you should begin working on creating your own products.

I outsource my affiliate marketing projects so I can focus on product creation...

I have to agree with Rick,

If your a newbie it would be best to start with affiliate products. Once you start making money you should create or have a product created for you.

Product creation = complete control over product, pricing etc... ability to get affiliates.

Affiliate marketing = no customer support or affiliate issues, less control over product.

    Did I oversimplify it?

I agree that affiliate marketing is easier. The work becomes harder when you create your own product. There is the making of the product, creation of a sales page and you have to actively seek affiliates to help you sell your product.

The upside of having your own product is that you make more money from the traffic sent to your offer. It comes down to economies of scale. Great question!

Product creation should definitely be your goal - you can use affiliate products to enter a market and even test different angles and products against that market, but the ultimate goal should be to create your own products because...

      1. That way you can leverage a few weeks of your time to make money again and again
      2. You can have an army of affiliates marketing YOUR products while you move on to something else instead of YOU spending all of your time marketing
      3. You benefit from the boost in credibility and branding that comes with being a product creator - an authority - rather than helping to boost someone else
      4. Having your own product actually puts you on a more equal footing with other major products in your space allowing you to work joint ventures and partnership you would never be able to achieve otherwise

Just a few reasons - believe it or not, there are even more :-)

Id like to contribute my thoughts here if I may.

When I first started out in internet marketing, I really had no idea what I was doing. Instead of learning the basics, I jumped straight into the deep end, creating my own products and well, trying to market them (If you could call it that) Let me just say that I wasted a LOT of time and money, and became extremely frustrated in the process.

If I could have my time over again, I would (as already suggested) start out as an affiliate, and LEARN THE BASICS, before venturing out as a vendor/product creator.

Once you learn and understand the basics, marketing your own products will be a lot less stressful and potentially, more profitable.

Do both (What I am doing now) but focus your time and energy to building your list and product. You must determine how often you are to launch a product + copywriting + looking for affiliates and then work backwards.

Affiliate products are to supplement your income while you work on creating products.

I do both and here's what

      Affiliate Marketing - Pros

I don't have to do customer support, handle refunds, deal with terrible customers.

      Affiliate Marketing - Cons

I have no control over the product. When I have my own products, I can offer sales at certain times and make a ton of sales.

Obviously product creation will give you the most control and instant access to your funds (since you'd typically sell it via Paypal), whereas affiliate marketing is a lot less complicated and may be the preferred route if you're new to IM and don't want to deal with technical hassles and the extra effort involved with product creation.

The funny thing is that you are more likely to get a lot of people say affiliate marketing because it's easier, less hassle, etc, but a lot of product creators aren't going to chime in and convince you to do product creation.

    Why?

Product creators want affiliates and want their affiliates to stay affiliates and not become competition. Sure some people who are honest will chime in here and tell you product creation is better, but a lot of product owners don't really want you to know that.

Sure, affiliate marketing is easier to start out with as a beginner, but as soon as you get a feel for the market and understand how things work, create your own product as soon as possible.

Product creation opens so many more doors for you and lets you LEVERAGE other people, their lists, their money, and their time, along with building your reputation and building your buyers list.

Product creation to me gets you to the next level in IM, once you are there and have your own buyers list you can then make even more with affiliate marketing, but you can get to the point where you make more with affiliate marketing faster by creating your own product first.

It depends on your comfort level. Are you up for the challenge when it comes to creating your own awesome product, sales page, product launch, affiliate program, etc.? If so, you should take action on it immediately. You can always fall back on affiliate marketing, or continue to do it while you launch your own product. There's no rule that says you can't do both and do them well!

Here is one more reason product creation may be your best choice...

When you create a product it is very similar to building a rental property in real estate. You now have an asset you can leverage for income for years.

You can reinvest your profits and keep adding to your product line-up, just like you would adding apartment complexes. You now have a wide line-up of products which are all selling, all making you money.

With affiliate marketing you do not own the property. It is like renting a stall at the mall. You can make great money, you can keep at it for a long time, but when the mall changes ownership you might lose your spot and be scrambling to relocate.

The best method is to have a product lineup of your own, use affiliate products as "added sales" to your email list you create through your own product sales.

I think product creation is the way to go,
because you'll make a lot more money as a product owner
If it converts well you can get affiliates promoting it for you
      and driving YOU traffic.

On the other side it takes more time, effort, skill and testing to create
      a high converting product.

So I think there's nothing wrong starting out with affiliate marketing and
building a little bit of a list first before making a product.
So that when you create it you have someone to sell it to.

You can launch it to your list and get some conversion stats which you can use to approach affiliates and jv's.

True ... but you can change the contents/stock on the stall a whole lot more easily than a product-owner can!

I find this ever-repeating discussion sometimes a little troublesome, because it seems to me that many vendors are enthusiastic to mention "specific" advantages of being a vendor, not realising that some affiliates have them, too. For example, affiliates can also build up a solid and appreciating asset (called an "authority site" and a "list") which can secure their long-term income, and without being so dependent on the vaguaries and vicissitudes of the overall market.

An affiliate's business is also a lot more flexible than a product-owning one, because product-development and production are avoided: one can more easily offer a whole range of different products at different prices, and change them around much more easily, too. On Clickbank alone, there are 13,500+ from which to choose.

I am part time into IM and have done fairly well with it but I would say go where you have a passion. I have done well with CB and some CPA's as a hobby/ second income but have lost the edge b/c my heart was not into it.

Hard to say where the money is based on your passion. You need to decide that. I'm turning to the product creation route. It's long and hard work though if you want to create quality products. Feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss more.

For beginners, affiliate marketing is definitely the easiest way to go. Simply promote other peoples' products and earn a commission. No headaches, no hassles. Once you start gaining lots of experience, you can then start creating your own products. Find affiliates to promote your stuff and build a small empire that way. This is where the big money is. If it gets to be too much to handle, you can outsource some of the work like customer service or other projects you don't want to do. If by chance you happen to create a "dud" product, you can always give it away as a bonus

    Hi:

Actually that's no right or wrong answers.

I prefer product creation because I have 100% control.

    - I can offer special discount to my list (keep my list happy)

    - I can package a few of my own products & run a firesale (makes more $$)

    - I can recruit affiliates to sell for me

    - My creditability increase instantly if I create my own products.

    - I'll be perceived as expert in my chosen niche

    Hope it helps

Benefits of product creation is that you can send visitors to a squeeze page to build your list and then promote your own product.

This divides your traffic into 2 sources - buyers and non-buyers - which you can then follow-up with accordingly. You can mix up promotions for your own products and affiliate products.

Another benefit to product creation is that you can recruit affiliates to drive your traffic - and you can promote your own products and affiliate products on the backend.

Product creation and affiliate marketing don't have to be seperate entities and work superbly together.

And more importantly - what do you think you enjoy most and what are you good at? I'm very slow when it comes to creating products so tend to stick primarily to list building, review sites and promoting affiliate products.

Something has always bugged me in this question. When someone says "create your own product," what do you mean? It seems like most people mean eBooks or software- but if you're not a coder, then you're stuck with eBooks- which is truthfully kind of niche to begin with. A lot of people don't want to pay to download a PDF- period.

Anyone willing to share other ideas? (I realize I might be asking for a business secret and the answer may be a flat out no, but I'd love to hear what people think.)

Your product is anything that you have created and that you have control over. A product can be an ebook, software, tangible goods, etc but a product may also mean, memberships, etc. I consider anything that can be "packaged" and delivered to be a product. Everything else tends to be a service, such as mentoring, copywriting, custom graphics etc.

Now, if you have standard packages of a service, such as a offer of writing 10 500word articles for $XX, some might also consider that to be sort of a product.

For my own part though, I only tend to label something as a product if it can be distributed multiple times. Stock images that are sold are another example of product. Once uploaded, the agency may sell the same image numerous times.

The danger with product creation is that it may take longer than you might have thought to get it done, and that bad products can earn you a negative reputation very quickly. Good products can build your reputation just as quickly.

      Why?!

I'm an affiliate in 8 different niches and am building 8 different lists for them.

Like most serious, professional affiliates (as you can see in countless threads like this one), I won't promote products whose vendor has his own opt-in on his sales page, so I'm not building anyone else's list for him.

As I mentioned above, this is exactly the problem with these discussions: "advantages" are claimed for vendors which apply to affiliates, too.

As both a vendor & an affiliate for several products, If you're starting out then, picking the affiliate route would be the more sensible option.

In my own experience Clickbank is best for affiliates because of the choice of products & available commissions & Paydotcom as a vendor, because you have more control & get payment very quickly through Paypal.

I would choose products from Clickbank that you have a knowledge or passion for & pick one's which are reasonably popular & have a 65%+ commission rate or better still recurring products which gives you a regular income, as long as the customer subscribes to the service.

I couldn't agree more, and that's the most valuable list of all.

Instead of this futile and never-ending agreement about which is better, why not just combine the two? That would give you the best of both worlds, and everyone should aspire to that, as it gives you BOTH flexibility and authority/stability.

There is no use in arguing and belaboring this point, which has somehow cropped up again and again in similar threads. Each has its own set of pros and cons, and in my opinion the best way to have a well-rounded business model is to combine the two!

Depends what the optin is. If it is backed up by selling the person into
the product or sales funnel you get paid commision on then why not,
especially if they track life long or recurring.

My view is that product creation should be the end goal, Affiliate marketing for me was the beginning stepping stones which help everyone understand and learn how 'Product Creation & marketing aspects' work when put into real life action.

It does take more effort and knowledge to begin to create solid quality products but if you can reach that point you are in a good position, being able to own and control what is in front of you, being able to market and distribute your own products & offers how you want.

Own products... Well you control the game. you have more
responsibility, though you have a much greater potential for making
    the big bucks.

Not only do you have all the usual affiliate traffic sources you can
also build you own little army of affiliates and have them out promoting
for you. As well as doing joint ventures with other product owners.

Adding your product to other peoples as an upsell or downsell and
selling other peoples the same way.

Having your own product you will probably end up with a much
more valuable list, because you know who your buyers are (unless
you are running an affiliate bonus system where they need to
    redeem).

A final thought.. Even if you have your own products affiliate
marketing can be a good add on. More legs under the table so to
    speak.
