eMail Unto Others As You Would Have Them eMail Unto You

My little thing here deals with helping you sell more of your stuff online. I'll get to that, but I need to start out with a true story. Hope you can bear with me just a bit.

I happen to know the owner of a little restaurant/bar across town. There is a small group of about 6-8 guys who go in around 7AM and sit at the same table. I don't go every day, but I go 2-3 times a week and have coffee, read the papers and talk about sports, politics, weather, etc. with these guys.

I call them all friends but I've never done anything socially with any of them. It's just a group of coffee buddies who've gotten to know each other through the years. Most are around my age and we all graduated from high school back in the Vietnam era.

Two days ago one of these guys was walking across the parking lot to go in when I pulled up. I mentioned that I heard him talking the other day about training dogs back years ago. I asked how he got into that.

I wouldn't have asked had known what it would bring up, but he began his story.

He explained that when he got out of high school he was drafted into the Army and was trained as a dog handler. He would work with dogs and train them to find anti-personnel devices.

He would take the point, 20 yards or so ahead of his men, on treks through the jungles. His dog would go before him sniffing out the way making sure there was nothing dangerous in the way. He told me how many dogs he lost... and it wasn't a pretty story. We both had tears in our eyes that were hard to hold back. He also explained that while he was never injured, one time a round went through the canteen strapped to his side and one went through his pants leg about his knee.

To the point. We all make instant judgments about people. We see them for ten seconds and make snap judgments about who they are. But people are more than what we see. They all have rich backgrounds, experiences, hopes, dreams and desires just like we do.

I get a lot of emails every day. Most are from guru types trying to promote an affiliate product. Buy this, click this, check this out... etc. They don't treat me like a real person and don't respect the fact that I am more than just a walking charge card who might order from them.

When email marketers don't respect me, and don't understand that I am a real person with feelings, hopes and desires myself--I tend not to respect them either. There are, on the other hand, a very few email marketers who give me something, if even something small, to try to earn my trust. And it doesn't have to be a 100 page ebook they give away, even just a quick one line tip is appreciated.

My point is simply that the people we email market to have depth in experiences and knowledge that we easily overlook--we just don't know and appreciate who they are and what they've done.

Maybe if we don't think of mailing to our list, but rather think in terms of mailing to individuals on that list we can create better relationships with our subscribers. And I'm as guilty of junk mailing as anyone, but I do try to give once in a while. I'm sure I need to do that more.

Just a thought. --Mike

Great post Mike and I completely agree with you. In fact I just wrote a lengthy post on my personal blog about how your email list is not an atm machine and we hit on many of the same points.

Although I didn't talk about dogs getting hurt or killed...my tears would have shorted out my keyboard before I got halfway through.

Excellent post Mike. Though too late for most of the big gurus as all they seem to care about these days are the $$$.

[QUOTE=Kristy Taylor;2766502]Excellent post Mike. Though too late for most of the big gurus as all they seem to care about these days are the $$$.

yet they will make more if they follow mikes advice.

that is the big paradox... the more you care about your people, list, followers, whatever... the more you will make because you will understand them better.

well said mike - by the way... you tell stories well from the example above... totally kept my interest.

even just a quick one line tip is appreciated.
    Mike,

I totally agree with your comments regarding the need to give
a little more. I mean verbally not just "here's a freebie for you".
If I wanted freebies I would use a fake email account and go to
    a Giveaway event.

If you want my real email address and a loyal subscriber
    I need something more personal.

eMail Unto Others As You Would Have Them eMail Unto You
That reminds me, I need to use your advice for my next mailing.
    Thanks

That's one heck of a post Mike, I enjoyed reading it, which is more than I can say for some of the 'material' that I read, or begin to read!

The title though not 'attractive' speaks for itself. Regrettably, few Warriors will read either your post or this thread - their loss IMHO.

Thanks for sharing the experience and the salient point that you make.

      Regards,
      Jeff.

Nice post Mike - I fully agree but, alas, in the hubub, forget. It's nice to be reminded.

    Thanks Tanner!

I know that's the ultimate objective, but I think we'd all like to take some pride in what we do... feel like we actually help others out.

Ain't that the truth? That's really what it's all about. I mean, if you don't understand the wants and needs of your subscribers you aren't likely to sell them much.

I need to take my own advice as well Larry.

Thanks for taking the time to write this post. It is very easy to forget there are real people at the other end of our emails. Getting too bogged down with stats and conversions and money and such can dehumanize our communications. There is no perfect way to balance it but your reminders will surely help.

Great post, Mike. Too bad the people who need to read it the most won't see it at all. They'll roll their eyes at the subject line, and go back to 'milking their cash cows.'

Back in high school, lo these many years ago, I was excited because I had a couple of dates with a hot girl who was with a carnival that set up in town. (You know what they say about carnie girls...).

Turned out, she was actually just a very nice girl escaping from a troubled home situation. We did normal high-school date things - movies, pizza, etc. (although I have to admit, the 'etc.' was a lot of fun).

During one of our conversations, she confided that carnies called the customers 'marks' because if they started seeing them as people, they couldn't do what they needed to do.

I wonder if referring to 'the list' might be some of the same thinking for some of them?

Mike, I've seen a couple of posts that tried to relay the same info as you just delivered, read them, said yeah, that's right and moved on. I read yours a couple of times. It was genuine, heartfelt and interesting. It's a message I won't soon forget.

That's why I'm on your list... and that's why I open your emails.

    John McCabe,
Your example, John, is just what I was talking about. Well said. It's easy to say someone is some kind of weird soul without knowing about them. But we all do have feelings and desires in life. Very good example--thank you.

I often think that one of our greatest foibles is that we often look at what people do without understanding the WHY behind what they do. Thanks John. --Mike
P.S. Thank you Bud, Chris & Janice as well. Your thoughts are appreciated!

    Mike,

We think so alike it's scary. Even my monkey nodded his head in approval when he read your OP. You have no idea how rare that is! Or maybe he was just thinking about his next round of bananas. He gets lost in his own little world sometimes.

Great stuff, man. You're really on a roll with your posts lately. ^5

Okay, a fellow Warrior, Tinkerbell (Tina Adams) read my post above and was kind enough to send me an article she posted on her blog recently with the same theme. Her article is much more involved and useful than mine. I asked if she minded if I shared her link here and she said, no problem.

(There is no promotional stuff or affiliate links in her article.)

    Mike, you are most welcome.

Although I must say it wasn't a recent blog post -- I'm offering it on my website for people who join my list but I sent it to you after I read this thread because it's just something I felt would be a good "share" for the community as a whole. If you want to share it with your list, feel free.
