Someone Is Using My Domain..?

Hello, Since I know just a bit more than Cut & Paste, I'll appreciate you comments
regarding this issue.
I've a domain registered at GoDaddy. Never done a thing.
Doing some research with Google I saw my domain listed # 2, 3 & 4.
Clicked the domain and there it was. But there was no way that I can find any info
to see who was using my domain.
Called GoDaddy. First, they say was impossible. After seeing it, they suggested to
change it back to their server and change my password.
I did it but, I don't understand. How the domain was pulled away from Go Daddy ?
Even a non technical person can smell foul play. What do you think ?
Thank you for your time and help

Did you try research registrar information?
Sounds like a bit of a misunderstanding to me IMHO.
Try a whois service like Whois Lookup - Domain Names Search, Registration, & Availability | Whois.net (first result off Google)

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

Log into your account and see which Name Servers it is pointed at.

GoDaddy changed to their server. I guess there's no
way to go see it now.

Do you have a hosting account?

Do you know the name servers?

If so... log in and point it at your own account.

It will be easier than you think.

Chris Grable, I don't have hosting.
I'll try to do as you said. Thank you for your help,

It could be that your registrr/hosted puts all that parked domain stuff that sometimes has links top things related to what´s in your domain? I believe Godaddy has such a service where you sign up or something and they fill it with advertising related to what´s on your domain. I believe they even have program to give you cut of whatever money it makes while being parked but icould be wrong. Not currently using them.

        Hope this helps.

Make sure you've "locked" your domain name to keep someone from moving it.

It's been ages since I used Go Daddy, so I don't remember where that was in the control panel, but as I recall, it wasn't hard to find.

You might want to consider moving your domain name registration to NameCheap. I haven't had any problems since transferring everything there (unlike GoDaddy where it was nothing but headaches).

Actually, GoDaddy told you everthing you need to solve your puzzle.

    1. Domains don't rank, only pages do. If you rank for pos 2,3 and 4 then you had atleast 3 pages ranking for that phrase. Someone had created content.

    2. How is that possible? Look at the Godaddy response. Change your domain name server BACK to them.

Someone hacked your account, pointed your domain to their server and set some content pages on it.

Moral of the story - don't use crappy passwords.

In hindsight he did you a favour. If you are parking domains you are not ageing them. By having some related content associated with that domain, atleast it has been aged a little (ie parking domains does not equate to ageing a domain because the domain is not been associated with content).

What everyone else has said here is reasonable. But what gets me is Godaddy's own advice says change your DNS back to them and change your password. That should be setting off all kinds of red flags.

Run a virus scan just to be sure (phishing software). Does Godaddy have security alerts? One of the reasons I use namecheap is that they email me every time my account is accessed and under what IP (also when any event happens). That way I will know if my account is accessed.

Hello, To all the people that responded to help me out: THANK YOU !!

I'm closing this thread because nothing really bad happened to me but,
I've learned lots of things from you guys. However, I can tell you
that my common sense lead me to being in a position that I can tell
"godaddy" to go, you no where... I've about 86 domains registered
with 1& 1 and NameCheap and the rest with "daddy".
Some how, I never did trust them. I just have transfered all my
domains to the two registrars just mentioned. I believe, once again
"Not all eggs in one basket" apply here. Bye, bye "daddy" !!
Cheap is a temptation but if you put the extra effort you always can
find coupons and/or specials. For instance, some domains I transfered
to NameCheap for $6.98 using coupon "transferme" until 10/31/10.
Again, Thank you for the ride.
I wish you all the very best,

If you haven't closed this yet, I'd like to hear what you found out. I'm not intending this as a smear session- but I've never trusted godaddy- something about a domain registrar's landing page being filled with trashy business practices and images I associate with trashy websites (really- what do scantily clad women have to do with registering a domain name- actually- don't answer that...) But my objection to them was more about use and that their site made me suspicious of them. Do we have reason to be genuinely concerned about the practices of this business?

Again- I'm not aiming for smear- but a real report of what could be a business to avoid.

I don't know. I guess was different content. Sorry but the issue is my
domain being used. Thank you anyhow.
Well, it's pretty much impossible to rank 3 pages from the same domain on the same google results page. Sure, you can get a double listing but it's impossible to tie up slots #2, #3 and #4 or any combination with the same domain. Google doesn't allow it.

Now this has nothing to do with your domain issues but it's a red flag - something isn't quite right with your story... one piece of faulty information opens up the door that we may be dealing with a case of human error.

Are you 100% sure it's your domain? It wasn't the default godaddy parking page junk they throw on every domain that isn't attached to a hosting account?

What happens when you click on the Google listing to visit the indexed page?

Most likely, you bought a domain name that previously had some content and search engine ranking and it hasn't dropped out of the index yet.

There is very likely a simple explanation for this rather than a dodgy hacking one.

Was the domain pre-owned? Did it previously live on a dedicated server?

A brand new domain won't rank anywhere on earth so your domain can't be new.

If the domain was previously hosted with the same service provider but on another customer's dedicated server then it would still show their content until the nameservers were changed back to the shared hosting servers.

      Steve Johnson,
Thank you for your response but, as of now when Godaddy
placed their servers address the page was removed.
So, I can't go any further to see what happened. At least
to the best of my limited knowledge for this matter.

Nothing to live and learn about - and I wouldn't worry about your domain stuff being hacked because odds are, it wasn't.

I had a domain that I gave up a number of years ago. It was snapped up as soon as the redemption period was over (guess I should have sold it myself, eh?) but some of my links were in Google's index for over 3 months even though the pages they pointed to didn't exist any longer. It was a static, unimportant site and not crawled very often by Google.

I'm impressed with somebody- they managed to not only fraudulently steal your domain, but rank it in Google! Just go with the flow and put up your own ads for whatever it ranked for! Passive income!

    Kidding, by the way.

There must be some paper trail- someone had to authorize this move- or some computer had to record this. Ownership of any kind of property- real or virtual, renting web space, and all of that comes with legal forms for a reason. I work in law and I hate those forms, but my section of law is loosely within fraud, and I can't tell you how many times there's a record of a fraudulent transaction just sitting there for you to go to the right person and say "hey- this is fake!" Somebody had to request the server move it- and Godaddy's big and tough enough that I bet they have their legal forms in good order. I'd bypass the tech people and see if someone in their legal or accounting departments can find the records of your domain- that'll help you hone in on what happened.
