Is Article Ranks worth it?

With all of the free article sites out there like Ezines and others, why pay to submit at Article Ranks? Is it really worth it?

    I've used services like Article Ranks (and Article Ranks specifically) before. I saw some success that I could reasonably attribute to having used it, but nothing too much or long term, and certainly not enough for me to justify the monthly cost.

    However, I don't and never have paid the monthly cost. I've submitted several sites to it with a reasonable PR, published articles I received from them (I'm very selective about this and only publish pretty good ones), and built up a good number of credits which I can use to submit articles for backlinks myself. This essentially makes the service free for me.
