To WWW or not to WWW that is the question

Not sure how or why but I made a post here on linking structure. My guess would be on why it was removed is because I broke up a link that was put in from a word I was using just as an example not knowing there was an actual site that would have linked to it. I now see the post has been removed some how. I really am not sure as to how or why but doesn't really matter none the least.

The post was about giving your thoughts on adding www or leaving it off.

I personally do not think it makes any difference at all how you link to your site. The only benefit it would bring to choose one or the other is for tracking purposes. This is the only real thing I see as picking one or the other.

I my self do link to my sites both ways simply because I just like typing those extra 3 W's lol. Anyhow what are your thoughts on WWW and noWWW linking.

You can actually add both sites : www version and non www version in Google webmaster tools and then set your preferences to which one you prefer.

Most people would set both to the same, and if you set your preferences to the non www version for example, Google would then only index pages and posts from the non www. version. Your main www version site will still be indexed though , just that only the url

The above answer is wrong. NEVER use both - googole will see it as TWO different sites!

Always link to your site using only one version and be consequent. That's the most important issue - always use the same variant, whichever you pick. Otherwise the "link juice" will be divided between the 'two' sites

I didnt say to use both, maybe I didnt express myself properly enough.

"You can actually add both sites : www version and non www version in Google webmaster tools and then set your preferences to which one you prefer."

I meant that you can add BOTH versions of your sites in Google Webmaster Tools, and then set your preferences to the same ones for BOTH of the sites, so that google will IGNORE the other site and not only index the URL (and not any of the pages or posts that come along with that version) which you did not set a preference for.

Once you set a preference, it won't matter whether you use www. or non www., because it will redirect them accordingly to your preferences.

I know what your are say I do actually use both but I tend to use www more often then not adding it. Also keep in mind a link is a link google strips the www out in most case. So there is no real need to add it to the string when building links. I just do it out of habit. So I have pretty much stuck with adding it for all of my links but like I said I do still link with out it from time to time. It is still a link back to your site either way and it will still carry weight. Linking one way or the other makes no difference at all and I do say stick with on variation but linking to both is not going to make that much of a difference in the long run.

Whatever you decide, make you have your htaccess forcing the site one way or another.. for instance.. if you decide to use www, then make sure your htaccess file inserts the www if the just enter the domain.com

I decide this based on two factors:

      1. The length of my domain name... Short domains names I will use www. and long domain names, I will not...

This is a matter of making my domain name and deep links fit inside of the advertising space I have available to me... If advertising in print, I think it is 24 characters wide (don't remember exactly)... If advertising a direct URL in an article, I tend to want to block that off at 65 characters with the http://

      2. My audience... Internet savvy people know it can go either way... Non-savvy Internet users may be confused if I leave off the www.

I always use the 'www.' version. It's what most people would type in.
301 the non www to the www.

Easy enough just to do the www most of the time, if you think about it. But I have overlooked it before! But yes, keep it consistent in your linking whichever you choose.

Browsers are smart nowadays. I have not been typing in either the http:// or the triple w for a very long time but just the domain name..

And yes. Choose either one as your preferred domain and not both at the same time. But it's best that you set a redirect for another to the preferred domain so that you won't lose any traffic for people who type in that.

Choose one and stick to it. Otherwise, your PR will dispersed as Istvan mentioned, Google sees both as 2 different domain.
