How would you monetize Twitter?

As I write this, Twitter has been down for about an hour, (see below)

(EDIT: back up again)

It occurs to me that maybe if it was monetized it might have fewer outages and could be a better experience for its users.

If you owned Twitter, how would you monetize it?

    Tough one. MSN and AOL monitized their chat applications years ago, part of what caused the IM wars, but they had an actual client to place ads on. There are so many free twitter clients out there it would be almost impossible for them to monitize a client, unless they shut out all of the other clients. Of course people would be up in arms about that.

    They could place small context ads in the twitter messages, or on the twitter site.

    They could offer special twitter advertisements to commercial customers.

    Offer longer messages or other features for a premium membership.

    I was sayin this on Twitter only yesterday..

    The place needs revenue asap... I would LOVE to see some ads served..
