Messages 1-7, or 8-14. When Do You Notice The Most Sales With Your List?

I always wanted to build a lot of value before I promoted anything to someone who just joined my list. Sometimes I would wait 10 days or 10 autoresponder messages until I promoted my product or an affiliate product.

However, when I actually started promoting the product on the first day I noticed I made a lot more sales than when I was promoting it on the 10th day. It seems like a lot of people weren't as excited or had even lost interest in the topic at hand by Day-10. So I've found this works best for me promoting right away. Give great content up front but also plug the product.

But a lot of people don't believe this way. So I'd like to find out, do you get more sales by promoting your product in the first 7 messages or do you get more sales by waiting and promoting in the next 7 messages?

I honestly go for a small upsell straight after they opt-in for a free product or list builder and this often gets me 50% conversions at $17. I then choose to promote again on the 3rd or 4th day. As I want to condition my list into a buyer mentality that if they want the really good juice then they will have to cough up some cash for it. I also give away great free content and try to follow the rule of 80% content and 20% promotions. I also like stacking bonuses that are useful to that product and that will actually be used. Like a free strategy session with myself or a free phone call or follow up to see how they are going. Just to make sure they are taking action and they can get the next product which takes them the next step up in there niche.

I keep hearing about the value of building a list, but I am still way to scared to do it.

In all my niches, I start promoting in either the third or fourth message, and then normally "promote something" in about one email in three from there onwards, taking about half the email to do so (which brings me to about 17% "promotional"!).

I used to do lots of testing, niche by niche, but I think I've now evolved a common, basic system that seems to work pretty well, with "my kind of customers" and I do a bit less testing/varying. I usually send messages on days 1, 3, 6, 10 and 15 and thereafter every 5 or 6 days, with the first promotion in the 3rd/4th message.

To answer the original question, I always have more sales from emails 8 - 14 than I do from emails 1 - 7. Partly because the first three usually aren't promoting anything.

When I was writing email series for others, it always used to surprise me that people wanted a "series of 7" or a "series of 10", and I was convinced they were leaving quite a bit of the money behind. I mean: what do these people buying a series of 10 autoresponder emails do after the 10 emails have gone out? (I keep on sending, to mine).

Isn't the saying that it takes at least 7 contacts to make a sale? If this is the case then it is ridiculous to only stop at 7 messages. You don't even give yourself a chance. I think most people have this mentality is because when they come online they're taught to create a 7-day ecourse.

I like to think that by message 7 they're now warm and ready to buy so this is where you add a bunch of other messages.

I also want to mention that I personally (not saying this is true for everyone) have been burned by giving away too much free stuff and not enough promotions. Like was mentioned above it conditions your list not to buy. Then again, only 5% of those people are going to sustain your business anyway.

Why are you scarred of making a list, you make a few mistakes here and there but it's like learning to ride a bike. It's hard to ride when you are standing still but once you have some motion behind you riding a bike seems easy and it's easy to make corrections as your ride.

If you are looking to start with list building send me a message and I will be glad to help you out.

Only split-testing your approach will reveal the best
time to promote for you and your list.

However, bear in mind that when people first join your
list, that's when they tend to be most interested and
hot to buy so don't wait too long before you promote
    something.

(Otherwise, you can inadvertently condition your list
to just expect great free content from you without
needing to buy much at all).

Personally, I give good content and make soft offers
early on and then have some more sales-focused
messages later in the series too.

In any case, any offers that I make are in the best
interest's of my subscribers so I want them to benefit
from the paid offers as soon as possible.

    Dedicated to your success,

    Shaun
