How or Why Does a Thread Just Disappear?

I posted a thread back in September and it disappeared.

There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it. It followed all of the rules of the forum. There were even quite a few views and responses too. One day it just vanished.

I ask this question for a few reasons.

1) I learned a lot from the responses

2) I didn't write it down since I didn't think it would be erased

3) I can still search the title in Google and it shows up in the SERP's, but when you click on it, it says the thread does not exist

4) I can't find any threads that are even close to my original thread (and I KNOW I can't be the only one that asked this question)

So what's the deal?

Click on the "cache" link -- maybe you'll still be able to see it that way.

Lesson for everyone: If you really want to keep the information in a forum thread, copy and paste it into a file on your hard drive.

      yep.

And just know there are aliens all over the place. They steal websites, remove sites from google and hosts, and they even delete perfectly good threads on this here forum.

The "how" is that one of the mods nukes it.

Why? Could be a lot of reasons, many of which have nothing to do with the original poster. Suffice to say that those reasons tend to fall under the umbrella heading of 'for the greater good of the community'...

For the record, the mods here do a superb job on the whole.

I don't doubt the mods here, but it makes me nervous to make a new thread asking the same question for fear of getting banned, especially when what seemed to be a harmless thread was deleted for the greater good.

I agree with that. Personally I save selected threads as a PDF, although if there are several pages, be sure to convert them all!

      Just my thoughts,

      Jeff.

You could also "print" the thread as a PDF using doPDF and then save it afterward.

If your thread is deleted because the question has been asked too many times, you're not going to be banned for something like that. Nothing to worry about.

Even if you mess up and break a rule and get banned, it's usually only for a few days. To be banned long-term or permanently you have to work at it. Or be a spammer.

Ken, Didn't Allen have a script created that allows members to save a thread in pdf format?

I couldn't locate it via the forums search form.

If I remember correctly it was a printer driver that you have to download and when
you want to print a thread as a pdf you could select print from your browser and
select the pdf print driver(by it's name???).

    Thanks,
    Have a Great Day!

I just click "thread tools" - "print version" and save it that way. Not as pretty as the pdf but fast and easy.

yeah, it was called WarriorPDF, and it was a printer driver. I think I still have it on my hard drive. I am not sure why but it was taken down a couple months ago.

You can use doPDF to "print" the thread, in case you didn't already know.

        Thanks for the suggestion.

There are a ton of pdf print drivers and pdf creation utilities out there. I actually own a license of Adobe Acrobat, so this has never been a problem for me. I just thought that it was super cool that Alan had that product created for us, and I tried to make a point of recommending it to people who started threads about PDF creation. Then one day I realized that it wasn't even there any more.

Meh. I was able to see the thread when I searched for it on Google and looked at the cache version of it so I'm not too hurt over it. The content was more important than where it sat.

It still seems odd that these things sorta just randomly happen, or just causes of whatever random reasons.

But that's the price you pay when to have a site that is this old.
