Why us newbies can't focus on one method

Hello All,

I figure it's easier to shift our routines if we really know why we behave a certain way. I've been thinking about the following for a few days and it seems to help me focus, so I thought I'd share these ideas.

Choosing one method of making money online, when we're new to it, seems counter intuitive. It seems more sensible to find out what works, and then just do that. I think that's why we see so many threads here titled "Best way to make $100/day", "What would you do if you had to start over with only $50", "Best Internet Marketing product you've ever bought", etc... because we want this information handed to us instead of learning the hard way and possibly losing some money, effort, and time.

No one wants to work for free or put effort into something that just isn't going to work. I think that's why we spend so much time researching and not taking action. I've been doing it for over a year, and still haven't even bought a domain name. Or we learn about something new, try it a little bit, and then quit after a few days when we get stuck or haven't made any money.

I think we all know that we're only really going to make some cash when we follow through and finish something... anything, but I think it's hard for most of us unless we know we're going to get some kind of return.

So I've been trying to stay mindful of this, and it really seems to be helping me buckle down. I try to keep in mind that I'm going to fail. I'm going to spend hours, days, weeks, and months grinding it out, and those efforts may not bear fruit, and that's okay. If I keep trying, then I know I'll get there.

Pleas share your ideas on this.

Very true. I've spent over a year reading new things about making money. Until I found this site, I'm actually taking action and hopefully I'll make it!

Just take action can be the most dangerous advice ever given. The wrong actions can leave you broke. Not taking any action will never make you rich but at the same time it doesn't cost anything.

Taking profitable action is another matter.

There are several step by step blueprints in this very forum. Pick one from a reputable member and get to it.

OMG i so totally agree with Troy .This in my eyes is an actual eye opener conclusion on the basis of the situation.

Nextly i myself used to switch from niches myself by being lured by the new IM teaching product being available on the market.
Nextly i even used to switch between them coz even after finding a niche and its keywords its jst hard to believ on something so totally unknown and also some people are in some situations where in they want good amount of money from their business as soon as possible to get rid of something [Well i was and i am in such a situation now ]

If you spend one week making phone calls and sell your services to offline business owners, you can absolutely make more money in your first week than 90% of the other aspiring IM'rs make in their first year.

Its the truth. Day by day, its becoming harder for skeptics to argue that truth, as the evidence unfolds itself.

The problem is when people who have never had success online try to be "internet marketing consultants" or whatever for a business. You have to actually know what you are doing before you start offering to do it for others... though I agree it is a very profitable (and efficient) way to go.

This is the whole key, and I'm glad that you seem to be grasping it. Newbies tend to expect instant results, however that is very unrealistic with IM where it takes some time and effort to send traffic to a site or build a list, etc. It is this impatience which causes newbies to skip from program to program in search of the magic bullet.

There isn't such a thing. There is no guaranteed way of making it within a short predefined timeframe, no matter what people may tell you. Even a so-called 'blueprint' needs to be adjusted and tweaked to your particular circumstances.

You just have to persevere and press on until you see success, which may come in weeks or months. There is really no way of guaranteeing that it happens in 1 month or less, which is what many newbies tend to think about. This is why mindset is so important for newbies especially, even though it's the most commonly neglected area of all.

I think one of the reasons why many of newbies in this IM industry shifted from one method or system to another is that they tried to look which system is more applicable to their product. As entrepreneur, I myself would prefer different strategies to market my product so I can make some comparison. In this way, I could tell and pick the best marketing method to promote my online business and make money fast out of it.

If starters wish to generate a guaranteed income, time management is important.

Allocate 70%-80% of the time doing some work that will guarantee you an income. Eg: offer online services, or any offline work that you know will definitely generate some guaranteed money.

Allocate the remaining of the time to your online business, focusing on just one PROVEN (This is so damn important that I can't stress enough) business model.

By doing this method, at least you'll have an income that can put food on your table, while slowly but surely expanding on your online business. You won't feel stressed or pressured into forcing yourself to generate money from your online business quickly.

Most quitters don't understand this concept, that is why when they don't see any income coming in at all for a few weeks or months, they get discouraged easily and quit.

People spend so much time learning all the tools so they can do everything themselves, this is crazy take action do what you do best and if theres something you cant do yourself just outsource it outsourcing is so cheap.
People waste so much time days, week, even months stuck on little things that can be done in no time so just get started working on your business each and every day and treat it like a reall business.

I agree 100%. It just takes you having a plan of action and following it. Work a few hours a day every day of the week and eventually you will reach your goal. You just got to keep at it and not stray away to try something else.

It took me at least a year before I started to make money online. The reason why is because there are so many methods to use.

Find one that sounds like something you can really focus on and go full speed.

Once you start making money, start outsourcing simple and tedious projects. Once you get the making money online down and the outsourcing down, you'll then be able to make money online while you focus on other projects.

This isn't just a problem for newbies, it is a fundamental part of human nature to desire an easier solution to any problem. Unfortunately, we humans are wired to want things to be easy or quick, and the marketers of the world have not only noticed this, but put an exceptional effort into taking advantage of it.

Look at the current state of most advertising these days. Whether we are talking about television ads, newspaper, magazine, or online advertisements, most are pushing one or anothe type of instant gratification. They may not be blatant about it, but it's there. Look at many of the online marketing ads: a huge percentage of them are emotional puff pieces that are promoting the emotional high of imagining yourself rich, then push the concept of being a millionaire virtually overnight. This is a dream to an experience starved consumer. It is also one of the primariy reasons that newbies in internet marketing can't seem to concentrate on a single program long enough to make any money.

Of course, many of the programs sold have inherent problems to begin with. Some are based on black-hat techniques or loopholes that no longer work, or may not actually have worked to begin with. The television programs and movies we have been watching for years have educated us to have a short attention span. Some time when you have a bit of time, notice that whatever program you are watching, you rarely see a scene that exceeds 20 seconds. The focus always changes within this period of time. As a result, we have learned to expect things to happen faster, so when we see advertisements that promise huge cash overnight, we tend to believe them.

There are a few online marketers that are telling the truth up front, and honestly marketing their products, but they are in the minority, because it doesn't lead to huge sales volumes, and one of the dirty secrets of online marketing is that the vast majority of unhappy customers don't even ask for a refund.

Some basic rules for evaluating advertsements:
If the ad doesn't tell you what the product is, don't buy it.
If the ad says you will make huge cash nearly overnight, don't buy it.
If the ad says you will make money almost overnight, don't buy it.
If the ad doesn't tell you that it takes time and effort to make money online, don't buy it.

I know this means that you shouldn't respond to maybe 80% of the ads you read , but that's the current state of online advertising. Be selective, be careful, look at the ad carefully. If it seems to tell it like it is, then you may wish to consider purchasing the product. If the product doesn't meet the claims of the advertisement, overcome your embarrassment and immediately request a refund.
The bad guys will eventually need to change their ways, or pack up their tents and move elsewhere. The good guys will profit and continue to develop new products that feature honest marketing techniques that you and I can use in the real world.

This is by far the reason why I am not making any money yet. I never take action. I read forums, blogs and articles all day on the newest techniques and I always say I am going to start, but end up reading something new and change.

This is exactly why I started a thread here on this forum to challenge new people like myself in the IM game to pick a strategy and stick to it for the month of November.

It is time to start taking action and stop wasting time.

Hopefully I will see some of you over in the challenge. You can find a link to the thread in my signature.

I was in the same boat over a year ago....then I learned how to become an expert in building and monetizing simple adsense/amazon affiliate sites.

I don't build a list yet, I don't get involved in CPA, I don't sell leads only Adsense and Amazon.....it's a proven and simple business model....

and yes.....I make very good money by staying focused in building only these sites....I flush out the ones that don't make money and rinse and repeat every week....

        I have over 100 sites...some as little as 5 pages...others 20+ pages

        good luck

Honestly? I find the majority of plans I come across all work. So it really boils down to what will work best for you - which you can't find out until you've implemented several different things.

Now go buy a domain name.

So true. Some models will simply appeal to some folks, and others will not. Yes, it can (and should!) take some time to research, to figure out what we think we'd like to do, etc., and I've spent plenty of time myself getting "educated." Fact is, WE NEVER STOP LEARNING!

For me, I know these things:

      1) Gotta know what's "out there" (the shear number of opportunities, programs, methodologies and models available is amazing; you'll find somethings that "fits" you)

      2) Focus (a study I reference to in my quality assurance classes showed that when our focus is pulled from a task at hand, it can take 20 minutes to "refocus" when we get back to that task. That's a huge time sucker! So... try to complete a given task without interruptions!)

      3) Time management (ties in with focus, the younger brother. Ever had a day where you felt you made great strides - not even working all day - and other days where you seemed to get nothing done, when you thought you did more work? Think about why.)

      4) Learn while you earn (Since learning is a life-long gift, can't wait until the learning stops before taking action. If so, I would never take action.)

      5) Do something, but not just anything (Doing the wrong things is counterproductive, but they can also teach us, if we let them. How does the thing you are doing tie in with your overall plan? No glory in scattered "doing.")

      6) Stomp the ugly demon of fear in the ground! (Fear is paralyzing. People will, in general, pay twice as much not to fear something as they will pay to gain a pleasure. Yes, a person will pay $2 not to fear something quicker than they'll pay $1 for something that satisfies. Easy to see why. Relieving fear actually does both - alleviates the anxiety AND produces pleasure in greater peace of mind.)

      7) Be confident (Not some cheesy "I'm ok, people like me, trying to convince myself I can do it," etc. Confidence built on emotions will epically FAIL when your emotions change. "Quiet confidence" is a state-of-being, just knowing that you can do what you set out to do. Unshakable, not tossed around by emotional changes or influenced by apparent lack of victory. And if/when you fail along the way, pick yourself up, shake off the dirt, and get back in the saddle.)

      Anyway, a few quick thoughts.

I agree with the first post here 100%, and I'm not sure what the answer is. Just starting something and working endlessly and waiting to see if the results are worth it will waste years of precious time, and no one will guide you any better.
Likewise struggling with a method that is like work will also waste your time.

I've been at this for years looking for the one that suits me, in such a way that I would look forward to doing it and that it actually both pays a living wage and has the potential for wealth. It turns out I really don't fit a lot of things, ...

Here's the one useful tip I really have learned; if you want life changing wealth from the internet, with the least stress and strain, and the most potential, it has to come from an automated income stream.
Customers find your product/item/whatever and choose to buy, money comes from paypal. The work then only becomes promotion, to an increasingly wider audience, not fulfillment.

And thats the one and only certain worthwhile truth about internet incomes I've found so far.

In, my opinion, the reason many newbies jump from one method to another is because they don't realize that building a profitable business takes a long time. I started out by trying several different things before I more-or-less focused on one.

I was one of those newbies who kept on searching before I settled on affiliate marketing. Its human nature not to believe on something they haven't tried yet. Words of mouth cant really convince everybody. They are newbies so they try so hard to learn a lot, forgetting that they should implement what they learn.

Newbies need a guide. A person who will teach them what to do but it is seldom that way. So they find their own way...results? Confused and not being able to focus at all.

If IM newbies were setting a goal to get into the NBA, they would shoot foul shots one day, give it up, then practice dribbling, give that up, passing...maybe shooting again...Oh well, I guess I'll never get into the NBA. Basketball is stupid.

Taking the wrong action, can cost you money. Not taking action can cost even more! Time waits for no one. You can waste your life contemplating the "right way" or you can take small, calculated actions and LEARN from everything you ever practice.

Personally, I'd rather stab myself with a dull fork than run an AdWords campaign. I also know people who do nothing but AdWords and they're rolling in the dough. Fortunately--unlike basketball--there are many things in marketing that you don't have to do. Give yourself enough of an opportunity to get good at something and watch the magic.

You have to find the right balance between testing the waters and sticking to one thing. A lot of people end up being the jack of all trades and earning a mediocre income. I've also known people to have too much of the Napoleon Hill inspired attitude of 'believing' something will work and spending countless hours every day for years at a project that's doomed to fail from the start.

    Interesting thread, interesting replies!
    My tuppenceworth...

It's the 'magic bullets' that cause the problems, 'a few clicks to earn 20k a month' and so on.
I would advise not spending *anything* on IM products - there is more than enough info for free on this forum to get you going, and really in detail stuff too!

Then use the basic formula - pick a proven market, pick a product service they are proven to want, drive traffic and convert - that's it!
I like free traffic generation, particularly article marketing, in fact in another thread I posted that a free article has got to number 2 on google out of 33,000 results for a targeted keyword, just this morning. I also have an article sitting at number 1 out of millions of results that I wrote years ago!

I would advise spending a few (around $10 month) on hosting, and buying domain names.
But hey, start with ONE domain name - then be prepared to WORK! You may have to write article after article, but believe me, when you get that first sale, you are well on the way.

    That's my advice anyhoo!
    Good luck,
    Gordon

I don't agree that those efforts will not 'bear fruit', they will, you will know what doesn't work. You will succeed by trial and error. Te only thing you have to do is take action, if the outcome is not exactly what you were looking for, you learn some more and correct the course, this way you will get to a point where you'll succeed for sure(sooner or later).

I think it is a zen proverb that says: "Many a false step was made by standing still."

If you don't take action you CAN'T succeed!

When I was a kid, I used to spend a lot of time playing games on my computer, and my dad told me all the time that I will never make money at the computer. So after I got internet I started to search for ways to make money and at 16 I started to make working as a freelancer. I didn't knew to work on Photoshop or any other software like this but I took projects and I learned after. I knew that if I have a project I will learn hoe to do it.
I was 17 when I took a 950$ project even though I never done that kind of graphics before, but I knew I will learn how, and I did.
Of course I'm not saying you should do that, you shouldn't, but I knew myself. I knew that I can learn it if I have to. I took action, I took the project.

Never say "I don't know to do that" say "I don't know to do that YET".

I agree with the OP, but here's what I have learned in my years of IM:

    - You're not doing this to impress your boss.
    - You don't really want to sit around unshaven, watching day time TV for the rest of your life.
    - You don't need to put pressure on yourself to get rich. Sports cars are over rated, and mansions are a bugger to keep clean.

    And in practical terms...

    - You must WANT to do this, with a passion. If it doesn't excite you, then it won't work. Money may drive you, but it won't get you off the ground mentally. When you keep busy, achieve real goals, learn new things, make others happy... THAT is what will keep you going when money isn't there.

    - Use your common sense. What have you bought in the last year? What do the people around you want, need and always talk about? What problems do you always hear people complaining about? These are the opportunities you should exploit.

Most people start backwards in this space. They want they money, then they are told they've got to start a blog and learn SEO (or whatever the flavour of the month is) and then they figure out they need to find a market.

    My advice?

    - Find a market.
    - Find out where that market can be reached.
    - Offer them a solution/upgrade to satisfy their needs
    - Build a relationship
    - Ask what else you can do for them
    - Sell them the solutions they ask you for
