Just try to come up with an idea for an app then pay a programmer to develop it... make a little bit of prelaunch buzz and line up some affiliates (there are sites specifically for iphone apps) and you should be good to go

He's right in that it's highly unlikely you will make any money out of it now. Still - look at the makers of Angry birds (don't quote me on these figures, they are from memory) - they were making $40,000 a day out the first one, released Another game that did 1 million sales in 10 days and then sold up their business to EA for 20 million $

        Not bad at all.

I totally agree! There is still a ton of apps that can be created. And even if you don't reinvent the wheel, sometimes an old idea redone hits the market at the right time with the right PR and you have a smash hit.

Plus the Android platform is still very open.

Love to explore this avenue more myself.

If you got any ideas and can't create them on your own then hire someone to build it for you. Outsource it and then put it up on itunes. You can even make it free and have ads in your app.

You can use adwhirl to use any and all of the ad networks you want.

How much does it costs to list your app in the apple store? Or you don't need to do that?

Yeah - there's a fee and they also take a cut per sale.

BTW - they only pay out when you reach a certain amount and that's by region... so if you only sold a couple of apps in several regions, even if the total amounts to more than the required pay out amount, you won't get a penny.

But still if you have a great idea and can find a programmer to do it, then you are on a good track.

I've actually heard that the android has been bringing back the app crazy since they have many free apps, but it doesn't mean you have to have them for free but you could put ads from AdMob which the android uses most frequently (possibly only).
Either way if you did or did not charge there seems to be alot sales from androids marketplace

Android apps are predominantly free (over 50% in the Android marketplace are free), but as you've mentioned you can monetize your apps in clever ways. With a bit of creativity, you could also monetize them using local businesses hungry for mobile exposure.

I think Android apps is where the current craze is. I've bought quite a few of them already.

I read that it takes approximately $500 to get an app accepted and listed in the itunes marketplace and approximately $0 to do that in the Android marketplace.

The Android is where I'd put my programming dollars.

It costs $99 to get an application in the App Store.

The largest expense will come in actually developing the app. The best way to go is to outsource through a service such as eLance.com You have to do your homework before selecting a programmer as everyone wants your business but not all may be capable. Also check their workload, 'cause if they are good... they will be busy.

Droid apps have a while to catch up to iPhone apps. Currently there are about 50K android apps compataired to over 200K iPhone/Touch/iPad apps. The market may even out later but right now Apple owns the market.

As someone earlier mentioned, there are ways to make money with the apps even if you list them for free.

          Hope this helps...

I totally agree. What some clever developers have done is made the initial application free, and then hook the user in with upsells later on. This is what the developer of the Angry Birds app has done - while this app is 99 cents in the iTunes store, it is offered free to Android users....you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll have some upsells later on down the road which the users will inevitably buy because they're already addicted to the game!

Many people now are really in to developing iPhone apps. I have a boss before that spent $3000 for the developing of the iPhone app and sell it in the app store or iTunes. When selling an app in iTunes you will need to create your own website for the application.

Find an app that is very popular on the PC, some trivial game. For example, Angry Birds is not a new idea. Point & Shoot (or in this case Swipe & Shoot) games have been around for a looong time. Angry Birds just gave it a name and beautiful graphics. And we all know how successful they are.

well the craze is over but there is still plenty of dosh to be made in the big oppertunitys that come along, just recently when the barclays cycle hire scheme was launched in london some kid made an app for it and took in £200,000 in one month, the money would always be there you just need to be creative.

as for the new craze i belive its the facebook apps which is about to take off big time.

The best way to profit from this is by creating a profitable app if you are a programmer. There are people who have earned five figures with this. But Iphone apps is old news, it's all about Android apps now.

The Ovi App Wizard might be of interest to someone, I haven't used it but on their website it says it lets you publish web content from RSS and Atom feeds into a mobile application for distribution to millions of consumers.
