A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a system of computers containing copies of data, placed at various points in a network so as to maximize bandwidth for access to the data from clients throughout the network. A client accesses a copy of the data near to the client, as opposed to all clients accessing the same central server, so as to avoid bottlenecks near that server. - Thanks Wikipedia!

Essentially Google's "Caffeine" algorithm that we all know too well by now is starting to push slow websites into the supplemented results. They are not de-indexing you, just pushing you out of the way for faster websites. So what's the solution?

Deliver your website content to your user as (physically) close to them as possible so it will load fast, make them happier and make Google happier in the process.

CDN's can be expensive, especially if you run a large site with a ton of media, but there's a really cool, FREE solution out there called CORAL. If you visit their website at hxxp://coralcdn.org/ you'll find a link on the top called "Download". There you'll find a several plugins (including one for WordPress) that will automatically, or with very little effort, add your website to a FREE CDN. I've tested it for a little over a month now and I've seen noticeable improvements in my analytics. It's not a cure-all solution but it definitely gives you a little extra torque on the information highway - and I'll take anything I can get!

If you're all too familiar with CDN's then thanks for the read, if I've taught you something you don't know then I hope it works for you like it did me.

This is really a useful piece of information. I had always thought CDN will be a very expensive solution but it looks its free now. One of the practical application could be hosting your videos. We all know how resource intensive videos are. If you can let your users download same version of video from their nearest location it will always load faster. So I look forward using it as a video CDN

Forgot to mention that using this with WP-Super-Cache for WordPress is a lightning fast solution. They work together well, you don't have to choose one or the other.

One of the keys that many people overlook is website file optimization... they used to teach it in college back in the days of dialup.

CDNs vary in quality and many fail to deliver true optimization... plus there are two types of file storage on CDNs one being temporary where the file is cleared if it is not regularly accessed from where it is stored.

So... in some cases using a crummy CDN can hurt your your site load time for many viewers is various parts of the world... so be careful when picking a CDN.

Other than that I wanted to mention a killer http compression technology called deflate. It reduced our bandwidth use by 75%! And our sites load faster with it.

deflate is an apache server mod.

I am not sure if CDNs are using it (some might) but we use it on our servers.
