i'm just starting out, and for now starting out with affiliate marketing. i have collected several approaches (some ebooks, postings for forums, etc). i'm deciding on whether to just pick one and focus exclusively on that for at least a month, or to pick two, and work on them separately, so i get less board and put another egg in the basket. which do you think is best? and what's your general approach to this?

I am currently working on 1 project and focusing on that. As a newbie I would say work on one thing and become really good at it. When you start making money with it and you have educated yourself about what you are doing then you can move on if you wish. But I say start with 1 program or opportunity.

Having both failed and succeeded in this, I recommend focusing on ONE strategy, but when building websites using the ONE strategy, and get an assembly line process going.

Do your work in "clumps". For example do keyword research for five websites. Then build the five websites doing it in a repetitive basis. You can become more efficient if you focus on building websites that way.

I agree with the other guys, choose one and work it for at least a month. You'll probably learn more and see quicker results that way. When you're doing several new things at once the temptation to "just go look at something" is always much higher, and focus is the name of the game here..

    Define project.

Do you mean website? Or do you mean marketing approach?

I work on five or six but some of them get neglected. I find writing is like a muscle. I'm lazy and don't really want to work it but the more I do the more efficient I get at doing it.

I'm in only two niche though so everything builds on itself.

I have to watch myself or I'll chase ever money making scheme and every free offer out there.

Staying focused is important but not that easy to do. I think IMers are naturally curious and that means lack of focus. It is a battle for me. I'm getting better at it.

Normally I focus on one project at a time, but occasionally I will work on two or three at the same time.

I am currently working on two projects. I have the structure set, it is all about maintenance now.

I strongly recommend focusing on one project at a time until you make money. I didn't start really making money until I started to do that.

Even now, the more projects I focus on, the less money I generally find myself making.

I guess I work much like MoonFish - I'm a freelance writer, which keeps me pretty busy, but I am also involved in several niches. That means I am always working on web content as well as reports and ebooks for my own sites. I am usually working on at least two things at a time, but I always set a completion date for every project and I work according to 'to do' lists. It seems like I am almost always 'working' but I really don't consider most of what I do work. I love to write!

There is a great guide out by Dennis Becker called "5 Bucks A Day". He doesn't show you how to make 5 bucks a day, but how to use 5 bucks a day as a strategy which makes you focus on just ONE project at a time each week.

Highly recommended. I didn't really start making traction and making money until I implemented this strategy.

It will keep you from chasing every shinny object you stumble across in your journey.

I have multiple different projects that I've been working on. CPA, PPC, and SEO campaigns. I'm going to start cutting the fat here shortly and focusing on one project at a time. Make that profitable before moving on.

  • At any one time, I've usually got around 10 projects on the go, another 10 with notes ready for when I want to work on it, and a load of older projects which I'd like to look back on and make changes to.

Some of these projects are very slow burners, but as I work with other people (both closely and those I outsource to), it's essential to keep everything running together.

If your doing affiliate marketing you could choose to promote a number of programs in your sales funnel, but if your starting out creating your own product stick to one if you are just working by yourself and not yet outsourcing.

When I first started I was I was working on several projects at once which I thought was being 'smart' since I wasn't putting all my eggs in one basket. This couldn't have been further from the truth! By starting up so many projects I was spreading myself thin and I had about 15 partially done websites instead of 2-3 really well done websites.

I recommend following a proven system first until you see some initial returns, optimize the campain/website, and once you have it working on its own move (low maintenance) on to other projects. It is certainly a good idea not to rely on one or two websites and establish multiple income streams but only AFTER your initial ones are performing.
