Keywords in Sub-Domain as powerful as a root keyword domain?

I always here about getting the keyword or keyword phrase into the domain name. Now, with so many domains taken, does it make sense to have the keyword phrase in a SUB-Domain?

Example: if mytopkeyword.com is taken, and i can only register anothertopkeyword.com; then, can I do it as mytopkeyword.anothertopkeyword.com

will this rank as well or will it destroy the keyword value?

I'm also interested to know the answer to this too and the difference having sub-domain makes compared to a folder?

For instance would mykeyword.mydomain.com rank better than mydomain.com/mykeyword

Sub Domains always rank better than folders. It used to be the case (though not too sure anymore) that Sub Domains almost ranked as well as TLD's so that if you got a generic TLD you could then load it up with sub domains and off you would go.

To be fair this technique worked like a stormer in 2005 but probably not so well nowadays. Googlebot up untill earlier this year (which was the last time we tried this technique) was placing almost as much credence in sub domains for keyword density as main domains.

We took a client TLD and loaded it with five sub domains that were all keyword rich, bookmarked the living daylights out of it and took all of the search terms to page 1 in Google.

If anyone wants any examples of this working then pm me off this and I'll gladly show you some examples just don't want to put the urls publicly for fear of skewing some results and stats at the moment.

Thanks. That is very helpful. As I am unable to PM at this time, I would love to see one or two examples. When I first started, it was a hobby. So we (my friend and I) bought domain names with no regard to keywords, just based on what "felt" fun and cool to us. The results were that one or two of these health sites got PR2 or something... today, years later, we are thinking of doing "proper" affiliate marketing and was wondering whether to buy new domains to be "keyword targeted" or to add on sub-domains. Your answer is helpful and we will try sub-domains and some TLDs and see what happens.

We are still new to this. I don't even know how to properly select a so-called "keyword targeted" domain!
