EDITED: What's the difference between a niche and a trend, Opinions needed

Hi Warriors,

I must pose a question to you all. A friend of mine and I have been discussing the definition of a 'niche,' as it applies to the 'industry wide accepted definition.'

Here is the one I came up with:

commerce an area of the market specializing in one type of product or service

Anyone else have another definition?

My definition will probably sound like doublespeak, but I think it's area of commerce or knowledge that can be described or thought of as a single unit. So a niche can be very small, as mentioned above, like: peruvian classical guitar players.

Or it can be quite large, like a premier auction site. In the world of clothing one might cater to a niche of "Joe the Plumber types who like t-shirts." That niche could be very large, but it sets itself apart from other classifications, in much the same way that Diego Norte (above) described a niche to be something that sets someone apart.

I do think it is important when trying to market to people that the niche can be thought of conceptually to have some type of unity.

A niche would be a specific segment of the market place, lets say video games that involve sports.

A trend would be the recent upswing in this niche due to the release of Madden 2008 (or is it 2009? not my market or niche)

niche=the narrow subset of any market usually defined by the specific common solutions to the demand, desires and problems they share.

trend=buying patterns of market based on variables given to change.

Trends can become a niche after they have proven to be more than trends.

For instance, twitter started as more of a novelty turned phenomenon, but has now established itself in the mainstream so it would no longer be classified as just a trend.

A niche is a market that shall remain active and it will have followers that are in it for the long run, a trend is a fad that may have its hotspots but it can fade away very fast.

A niche would be something like "make money online." This niche would be under something like business or home business category.
