Hello warriors,

I have a quick question to verify.

If a certain keyword has a global search of 9000 and when put in "quotes" it has 16,000 competing pages, is it a good keyword to choose?

Sorry if my question may sound dumb but just wanna be sure. Thanks in advance.

    Hey There,
The short answer is NO. The long answer is Possibly, just depends on the keyword and how well the competition is embeded on it.

It depends on the competition. The total number of sites showing up in the search results have nothing to do with competition. You need to analyze the top 10 sites and look at their backlinks ans on-site seo.

Make sure you're getting the EXACT searches (keywords should show in [brackets like this] if you're doing it right). Also, from what I can see, the results shown on that page should be taken with a huge grain of salt in some cases. Example, do an exact search on "father's day gifts".

That's not a particularly reliable method to determine strength of competition. Those are just results of how many pages on the internet are indexed with that particular phrase. I know that method's been thrown around a lot.

Because what you don't know is how strong the competition is for those top ten results on the first page of Google. You'll need to look at backlinks, H1 tags, title tags -- a little more in-depth SEO analysis.

But typically, depending on the niche market, it's likely that you could rank for that keyword with those few pages...but it's not certain without doing more in-depth analysis.

If you have the money, invest in a good keyword tool like Market Samurai, Micro Niche Finder or Keyword Elite 2.0.

I like Keyword Elite. It also will tell you Red, Yellow or Green for ranking.

Yes it depends on how the keyword well. If the keywords have nice traffic and competition then it is good.

Although Micro Niche Finder is re-grouping after Google revamped their kw tool, I really love it for 'one stop shopping'. They also offer lots of free webinars too.

Definitely not enough info to go on. You need to look at the Top 10 results on Google first:

    1. How competitive are the Top 10? For example, are they well optimized, what are their PageRanks, etc? If you find a results page that's full of PR4s, you probably aren't going to rank well (at least for a long while).

You also need to think about whether or not it's a "buying" keyword. Microsoft's OCI tool can help with this, but it isn't always accurate. Think for yourself - is the keyword something you'd use when searching for information or searching to buy something? Of the Top 10 results, how many are targeted for general information and how many appear to actively be selling the kind of product you want to target?
