I have a golden domain but can't monetize it

I have a domain that has an exact keyword phrase that gets 30,000+ Google searches a month, has a domain age of 6 years old and I cannot figure out how to monetize the thing.

It's in the tattoo and body piercings niche. I've tried those Clickbank ads to graphic designs where people can find their own tattoo stencils or whatever but it's not working for me.

How can I think out of the box and monetize this domain? Currently I have it as a review site of piercing kits and tattoo kits for professional artists and I also have an ad to the hoplink to Clickbank.

It doesn't have a whole lot of backlinks, I'm sure that's my issue here but when you have a keyword phrase such as this that is such a popular search phrase, I'm made to understand that you hardly need backlinks? :confused:

Someone help me understand?

    Alternatively collect leads and rent the site out to tattoo and body piercing parlors.......

      Herein lies the problem. The domain used to be an adult domain directing to content of sexy girls with body piercings and tattoos. So it gets some traffic, but the traffic is expecting to see something else.

      I want to turn it into a mainstream site.

        Some ideas off the top of my head:

        Selling tattoo equipment
        Selling piercing supplies, body jewelry
        Selling other items for people interested in the body modification subculture, such as shirts, gifts, novelties, books about tattoos and art
        Writing an e-book about something of interest - opening a tattoo/piercing parlor, becoming a tattoo artist or piercer, how to care for your body art
        Starting a forum about body modification, the tattoo or piercing industry, etc.
        Like someone else said, lead generation for different areas
        Community review site where people can post pictures/reviews of their new tattoos and piercings (might make the site NSFW though)
        Alternative dating/personals site

        If you decide not to go with the mainstream thing, you could also work off of the site's prior reputation. While you don't have to go full-on adult, you could team up with someone to create a product about becoming a fetish model or something similar.

        The truth emerges.

        "The traffic is expecting to see something else" is not so encouraging, I'm afraid. In marketing, you have to match your offer to the market: "find out what people are looking for and then find a way of supplying it". This is presumably why the Clickbank offers didn't bring income: there was a mismatch between what the people were looking for and what was available. And that's perhaps going to apply to the uses suggested above, too.

        Still, the domain name, by the sound of it, certain has some attributes that suggest it may have real value to someone. Have you thought about selling this one, or are you determined to develop it yourself?

          Yeah I agree with you Alexa, the traffic is not targeted. I am determined to flip this to a mainstream site though. Like I said the keyword phrase is a gem with little competition. There has GOT to be a way to monetize this.

          I'm just going to focus on traffic now I guess.

            I also have a tattoo site. It only gets around 500 uniques a month, sits on page 1 of Google anywhere from 9 -4.
            In the 9 mths I have had it I have made a few dollars in adsense.
            I have adsense, clickbank and my own product on it.
            On another forum I am on a gentleman was saying that the tattoo niche is one of the hardest to monetize.
            I have no idea if that is true across the board, but has been true in my case.

    It sounds like there is probably some competition for this keyphrase, and you will need to get some backlinks in order for it to rank on Google. Have you checked out your competition on page 1 of Google to see how many and what kinds of backlinks they get?

      If you search for this phrase on google there is very very little competition. I'm telling you, it's a goldmine if I can just monetize it the right way. I will check out competitors but they all seem to be like tattoo parlors.

    Sell Henna Tattoos. Or create a product that allows you to print off an design from your library, then cut it out, slap it on your arm, and use it as a template for a temp tatt.

    OR.....I could make it into one of those "hot or not" sites where you put people's tattoos up together and you vote on which tattoo is the better? And then just put some adsense and other banners around it? I dunno.

      Jennifer you have some good ideas with the adsense part. I think the issue with monetization is that there are no 'buying keywords' in this niche online. Have you checked the ?

    Look for Suzanne (sbucciarel) she sells quality pre made blogs and has a tattoo one. They're very good and very nicely priced and most are pre monetised. If there's very little competition and you know how to rank for it then at least for about 17 bucks you have a site you can test with up in half a day.

    You should just sell the domain to someone that is in the adult industry and provide details and proof that the old domain used to belong to sexy girls with tattoos and piercings, from the traffic alone and the history you should easily be able to fetch a good price (provided you know where to find the buyers..but the adult industry may be a bit difficult)
