Are Hostgator Sites Down?

Hi guys,

I know I should wait, but it's been minutes and my sites hosted on Hostgator are still down. Anyone experiencing the same or know if something is wrong?

Thanks,
Michael

Though perhaps that wouldn't have been such a bad thing lol. Well I'm gona submit a support ticket just to help hurry them on with fixing the problem

    It's just you.

Would people with dedicated servers also be affected?

I feel bad for the thousands of dollars in wasted PPC clicks being used up right now...

    Hey there,

I've got 3 servers I work on, and all three are out to lunch. One video did just start playing. But in general, they seem pretty well down.

A friend on Skype was calling - said they didn't get into a service queue - they actually got a BUSY signal calling Hostgator. Ouch.

    I'm going to bed. It's 1am here....

    Cheers,
    Tim

My sites did not go down - and I was able to access HG without a problem.
So apparently "all HG sites are down" was not correct.

The expectation that sites will never have a few minutes of downtime is not realistic. HG has less downtime than any hosting I've used.

Whenever I think I have a site down, the first thing I do is a trace route. From a pc, open a command box (Start, Run, enter cmd and press enter). You know, the old fashioned command line in a black box.

Enter tracert www.somedomainname.com and watch the hops from your location to the eventual server at the other end. You can get a good idea of whether it is really the host, or some routing problem between you and the host. It isn't always the host. In the case this morning, I don't know because by the time I saw the message, everything was all back up.

These days, it is very unusual for a site to have multiple servers offline at the same time. They are in large datacenters with serious power backup and redundant connections to the internet.

If I couldn't get to one of my sites, I'd check others before I wonder about the web host, because all too often it's not the sites themselves, but some routing problem between you and the site. This is where forums like this are so valuable. If people from diverse locations are having problems, it helps to determine where the problem exists. Also, If my site plus the hosting company are both out, I first wonder if there is a routing problem, because I KNOW my site isn't on the same servers as the host provider's main pages.

We've become so used to near 100% uptime that we tend to panic whenever things aren't working like we expect. Working from an island in the Pacific, I've seen more than a few times that we've been cut off for hours. A few months ago, somebody accidentally damaged a cable between two islands and isolated us for hours before circuits were rerouted. This sort of thing typically doesn't happen so often on mainland U.S.

I love that we can communicate through the forum to know what is happening, it is so much easeir than the early days of the internet...
