Anyone Else Make Good Money By Selling Short Reports for $7 to $17?

Allen Says actually has a good post about this in the warroom so I advise anyone to go check it out.

I've been selling little reports for the last 5 years. I don't have any $97 products and I definitely don't sell any $1,000 products.

But I do sell a lot of short reports that average in between $10 and $17.

How did I get into this?

I started out as a clickbank affiliate but I found out things were too inconsistent. I wanted more control over the sales process and I wanted to use paypal to get money quickly to my account.

At the time I didn't have the resources to create an expensive $97 product nor did I feel good about selling anything for that price that I had to offer.

I knew I wasn't going to make as much selling cheap reports but I turned out to be wrong.

You see, it's fairly easy to convert 10% of your list to a $10 report. It's a lot more difficult to even get them to buy a $47 report. Of course this all depends on what you're selling.

But I don't just sell 1 short report. I promote a short report each week for 4-6 weeks when someone signs up. So while I may not be getting the bigger dollars per sale I convert a lot more people into buyers with my cheap reports and eventually make up the difference and more that an expensive product would give me.

It's also beneficial to launch one per week versus just selling one at a time. If you make the reports fun and interesting people will buy them. Next thing you know is that $10 customer has now bought 5 reports worth $50.

I've heard a lot about people refunding small ticket items but I've never had a problem. In fact, I've bought things before at $10 that didn't have a clear download page. Sometimes I didn't even feel like it was the worth the effort to contact the owner and wait a week for a response. After all it was just $10. (not saying everyone is like this. )

I advise most people starting out to do this. Then you can sign up for a fee account at clicktale and see what people are doing on your site instead of wondering what they're doing on the affiliate site you're promoting.

Of course we all have our own business models and things work differently for a lot of people. But so far this is working for me.

What are you experiences with selling these small cheap reports?

Small reports are excellent and I use them often but its not out of line to assume you won't become a millionaire off of them alone. To maximize my income I will sell many short reports that can be effective on their own but can be even MORE effective with a higher priced add on. I never want to make people think they need additional products to become successful but I do like to provide them with options that will help them achieve their goal QUICKER. This begins to develop a sales funnel of Free ---> Cheap short report ----> More expensive add on ----> High priced brand new product or system.

Another good technique is after selling several of the smaller priced reports you can combine them to form a higher priced product.

For example, you sell a low priced report on list building, then another report on affiliate marketing, then another on article marketing, then another on keyword research...etc

At some point you can combine the reports into a complete marketing product which can then be sold as a higher priced product to a new set of customers.

      Tim

DaveJ, I'm just curious: Are you working in the MMO niche? And approximately how many pages would make up one of your short reports?

I don't have anything in the MMO niche. I have done a few wso's in the past but I am not in the IM market.

10-20 pages is all you need.

Also, I don't do an upsell after either. It's not always about making more money. I want my list to know that they can buy my new product every week without having to worry about an upsell.

Like I said earlier, the whole purpose is releasing more than one product. If each product per week for 4 weeks converts at 10% that's like having a $40 product converting converting at $10. Of course this is only true if I am selling each report for $10 for those 4 weeks.

It's great to see a thread like this because small reports appear to be the foundation of many IMers.

Looking at how you do it shows not only how it should be done but what affiliates need from producers to help them make more sales.

It is the back-end sales where you will make most of your money, sell them a $7 report with say a $27 membership where they get all your report's free and special discounts on any future high ticket items. Plus a weekly webinar to ask you questions etc.

Selling cheap reports is great for building a high converting list. A list of 1000 buyers can sometimes be more powerful than a list of 10'000 subscribers (although it depends on some factors). A lot of people want freebies, and that's fine, but having a list of buyers will usually get the great conversions and repeating customers. Making $1000 per week in this way is not unrealistic.

For those starting out: releasing cheap reports as WSOs is recommended. It will get easier over time to make more sales and your income will grow and grow, because you'll be building upon your customer base time after time. I think potentially it's worth having a variety of different priced products, as well as different methods of selling (WSOs, joint ventures etc..) - that way your eggs are never all in the same basket.

This sounds like a really interesting idea that I might try out. Currently I have a 112 page report that I sell for $47. It's made up of about 20 Lessons but I could chop those up into 10 $5 lessons or something like that and offer that to my list (once I get one built up)

Marketing them can be fairly easy if you develop a list of buyers and then send them an update everytime you release a new short report. This works extremely well if the reports are all along the same niche or theme.

For example, you wouldn't want to mail your list of IM short report buyers in order to let them know you have a new short report on losing weight..etc

I've seen this method utilized by more than one successful marketer on this forum. They begin to build the list immediately following the first short report purchase and never let up, consistently putting report after report out to the ever growing list of subscribers.

I'll paraphrase what Allen Says said in the War Room. Don't just sell short reports. Build a brand. Also, don't be afraid to sell higher ticket ($97+) items to your list of short report buyers.

So, instead of just doing reports randomly, do a series of reports based on a common theme. Kevin Riley (at Product Creation Labs - Create Your Own Information Product) did this with his Recipe reports.

    I think it is doable.

When I first started online I sold a small $7 ebook and had a massive membership program tied behind it.

    now that was fun!!!

But I must say, the only reason I did really well from both is I had a LIST!

Many people will realise the true potential to making money online when they build a list and build a trusting relationship with those people.

As a number of people here have already stated, having a backend strategy (or two or three) can make this even more lucrative.

Some other things that are very easy to implement are:

    1. When first starting out, and you don't have multiple reports, put a related affiliate offer on your download page. Your backend strategy can simply be to make commissions from selling someone else's higher priced product right from your download page.

    2. As you build an "inventory" of short reports, create a virtual "catalog", so that first time buyers have a place to go to order reports that you released BEFORE they purchased and/or got on your list. As in #1, above, you can promote that catalog page from your download page - but if the affiliate offer is doing well, you can leave it, and link to your catalog page from the bottom of this week's promotional email, instead.

    3. Set up a page of "sale" items, where you regularly offer a few of your older reports at a discount. Swap out the offers on this page, on a regular basis, so that every time you mail out "this week's offer" you also have a different set of specials". Give them a link to that page right in your follow up emails, and they will soon learn that besides the latest report, they might also be able to pick up something else (that they either missed or passed on at the time), at a "bargain basement price".

    4. Re-purpose your older reports that no longer attract buyers. Offer a "slow mover" as a free bonus, on the sales page for this week's report. Blow the dust off those products, and let them add extra value to this week's weekly offer.

I could go on, and on, but hopefully a light bulb has gone off, and you can come up with many more ways, to do similar things, to increase revenue from your short reports.

Short reports can be an excellent way to go. They're quick and easy to produce once you get the hang of it and creating a bunch of them in one specific niche can open the floodgates and help build a significant business.

Focus on the quality of the details you provide. Since they're short and sweet, there's no room to ramble. Keep it lean and mean and on point. Cover one specific aspect that's important to the people in your market. Think of it as one lesson in a continuing education course at your local college.

If you had to explain your concept clearly in one sitting, how would you do it? Map it out with a simple outline first. Then create a mock up. If it's 10 pages, staple 10 pages together and list one sub-topic, keyword, or question on each page. There are plenty of ways to do it. Then it's just a matter of fleshing out a few key details as you would with any article.

Bang it out in an hour or two and then start thinking about your next report. You could also do this with audio recordings or videos - or perhaps all three for a beefed-up package.

Awesome post - awesome thread! Thanks Dave!

I really like this idea and feel there is definitely real merit in taking this approach - great for us procrastinating over-analyzers as well! Just hammer out something short and sweet (packed with really good info of course) and start selling it. I think this sort of approach could really help people to gain momentum nicely - and as someone already pointed out, you could then combine a bunch of them to make something bigger!

Some of my most frustrating attempts at putting a product together have involved trying to create the "Ultimate" all-in-one resource that's perfect in every way. 9 times out of 10 it just doesn't get done! Meanwhile, Dave's made 100 sales and is laughing all the way to the bank! lol

As far as increasing the likelihood that people will buy - you need to look no further than the WSO forum to see how much people love inexpensive products. It's so easy to think "no biggie - it's only $7" - then 3 months later you're wondering how you somehow managed to spend $2000 on IM products (while clogging your hard-drive with a zillion WSOs). Just a silly example, of course - honest (lol) - but I'm sure all the keener WSO buyers out there know what I mean.

One other thing - the approach also builds trust and reputation (and potentially scores of raving fans)! Again, similar to some of the WSO super stars - people will be waiting by their computers, just itching to buy your next product.

In today's economy, if you're able to bring in $1k to $1.5k profit from short reports a month minimum you can own a big ass property.

There are so many houses and ranches in foreclosure that it isn't even funny. I'm looking at ranches with 100 acres going for $16k! With a DSL hookup or satellite you are good to go if you work at home like me.

That's what's cool about IM once you get a list and residual income rolling. You end up with your bottom line necessities taken care of to the point that the rest is gravy that you can spend now or save for a rainy day. It appears that short reports are a great way to start and a staple of any IMer.

Another way to develop this (if you don't have a list already) is to try relevant ezine advertising. Ezines go out to their own lists and that can give you some sales (if you have a landing page - some emails).

Someone above suggested video reports. How about adding more info. to your report in a video and upselling the video in the report. Now each report can make you more money!

If you keep the reports within a certain field (niche), then when you have a couple, you can bundle them together into a bigger offer with videos, reports, and resources.

This is the smart way (OP), to start building quality products and WSOs. Start small and then build them up!

I know of some well known marketers who uses small reports
as a foot in the door to market their higher priced items.

That is aside from making money on the short reports as well
specially when you start selling them in bulk (think of 1k, 2k, 3k copies sold)

Doing it weekly definitely makes it interesting, though just make
sure that there is a new thing to be learned from it and
    it gives value.

You know I was thinking about all the actual useful WSO's I have purchased, and they are all short to the point and in the $7-$10 range.

Then when I am on these guy's list after buying s sweet short report I am more apt to buy when they shoot me an email about their next one.

I actually have an idea for a nice short report on Amazon, may have to give it a go after reading this thread.

Here are a few things you can do to serve your list even more:

    1. Group related reports and sell as a package. In off-line world of non-IM, this approach has worked very well for me.

    2. Put the same 10-20 page information on a video presentation (Camtesia style) and sell for 2x to 3x (some people prefer to learn from video). Of course, also convert the video to mp3 for drive time use.

I expect with just these 2 strategies, you should see immediate results.

    Best wishes,

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but, another thing you can do with short reports is to ensure you have lots of links to other associated products (affiliate links if you don't have your own related products).

Then give away these "viral reports" to build your list, and make some affiliate sales too.

you wont make nearly as much as you would if you applied your time elsewhere....like into a good blog or a website that offers value...imo

expect 2-4k for a good WSO but then it drops like a bag of bricks in about 1 month then you are stuck starting all over

That's if you're limiting your reports to the IM niche. If you open up your reports to other niches, then many of them can become evergreen, and never "drop like a bag of bricks". One of my first short reports has been selling consistently for nearly 5 years now.

Report that offers value won't drops like a bag of bricks. For 2-4k WSO, you'll have 200 - 400 buyer list (perhaps lot more if you offer 100% affiliate commission), popular report that you can put online and generating sales without you doing anything, and 0.5-1k money which you can invest in building solid traffic (lots of traffic if you know what you're doing) for your newly put online report.

The idea of short reports in intriguing to me as a downsell from an ebook idea that I'm planning.

I just launched my website 2 days ago and I have seen some traffic as well as opt-ins. I have no product as of yet.

My plan is to put a free report on my site, after entering name & email (squeeze page of sorts but really a lightbox), and then in the autoresponder thank you for subscribing message I want to offer the ebook for sale. If they do not want the ebook, then I plan to offer a short report on a specific topic for i.e., $1.99 (if I add audio will be i.e., $3.99 and with video/photos $5.99).

If I were to sell an ebook and short reports how would that work from an autoresponder? Do I just link people to a sales page?

I do not have a membership site and am not technical enough to set up pages on my Blogs (Elegant Theme) for purchases. I thought I could set up private pages with a PayPal button, however, the private page that I just tested is only visible to me when logged into WordPress as admin.

Also, if I were to make audio/video available for these same short reports, how would I sell them via autoresponders? I know that I can have unlisted videos on youtube, but those could be passed around by buyers...which of course would upset future buyers if they found the information for free.

I have a JW player on my website, but then I am back to the Private Page problem and how to allow customers to see the information.

Where should the ebook/reports/audio/video be hosted so as not to be shared for free?

Thanks in advance for any direction you can provide. I do not want this technical stuff to hold me up.

    Right on GaryV.

I cover so many areas of interests that I should be writing short reports all day long. So now it's on to building my lists and churning out reports.

What I've learn for some of respected marketer here is that you actually can increase price of your short report little by little simply by turned your report into video, audio, and ipod format.

While you might providing the same exact information, but since you giving them multiple ways to consume your product, you can charge a little bit more for your product.

Or maybe if you're not comfortable with raising your price for your entry point product, you can just make the video, audio, ipod format the upsell?

$10 report with additional $7 if they want to access the different format.

It surely increase the $ per visitor without much effort, attract more affiliates (if you use residual tracking), which exponentially increase your buyer list.

I love selling products in the low price range. They convert very easily and in my experience, the refund rate is significantly lower than high priced products.

Sometimes the short reports and low price work better than the larger reports and high values, if you take Google business model, for the majority of the time this works exceedingly well

To answer the question posed by the OP, I sell a product outside the Warrior Forum for under $17, and it does very well. It's not a report per se, but there is definitely a solid business to be built around low-priced products.

Hi. I haven't sold any reports in the past but i'm working on a product at the moment that I am going to give for free but then sell resell rights on the backend for a low end price and I was thinking around $7 to $17 and hopefully it will then go viral as well.

Do you have upsell in place behind your report or within them ?

I read the whole thread, so I'm going to throw my 2 cents worth in...even at this late date
I've written several reports to use as a give away for a sign-up. I've always thought about selling them, and now I think I'll do just that!
    Thanks for the inspiration.

Selling short reports is not as good as selling more expensive product, i.e software that can be sold several hundreds each. If people are buying more expensive product, why you want to waste your time selling cheaper product that only gives you less money?

Think big and you'll earn big!

Short reports are great for opt in generation and passive selling... PLRs are the best; with passive links and upsells. But... content is King.

If you report is good then your chance of making a sale, and later upsells are a lot better. But... price is important.

PLRs / short reports range from 20-30 pages for the 10-17 range.
    40-80 for the 27 to 40 range.
    100+ for over 47 range.

However if what you are selling is hot , in demand or not available ANYWHERE else [hopefully all three] ; then you can charge a lot more.

I started my business in 1995 ; made 2K a month selling "reports" ; now I sell products/services from $5/month and up ; and one time from $50 to $1000s.

short reports are definitely a good way to start and get yourself out there...especially if they are quality reports and very low priced you'll have people wanting more from you. And as demand increases, so can your prices and so will your profits.

Agreed that short reports are the way to go. In today's tough economy you really have to build trust to be able to sell someone on a high end product. Also the sales that you get can definitely add up quickly if put in front of the right audience.

It never ceases to amaze me just how profitable and *popular* short reports can be.

Just a while ago I wrote an letter about it to my subscribers and since it's kinda old-school I wasn't sure what kind of reaction it would get...

FYI - I've move the letter here: (nothing for sale and no email required):
â€Å"Are Short PDF Reports Dead?†| The Freedom Brief

Well, according to my stats it was (and remains to this day) one of my most read letters. It's the perfect business to start with and one of the most sustainable business models to get involved in for the long term.

Don't let the video and multi-media people disuade you from getting started with short PDF reports. There's money in them thar hills.
