Frank Kern's "International House of Ninjas"

I deliberated whether this should go in the Main, Copywriting, or Offline Marketing section. I decided on the Main forum since I honestly think it can open many Warrior's eyes to the various ways you can market yourself and your business.

I just went to the mailbox and received a large 9" x 11" white letter from the "International House of Ninjas". My name and address was written by hand in thin, blue sharpie marker. Postage was $1.05.

I was actually scared to open it...thinking ninjas might have actually sent it. But I risked my life anyways out of curiosity. Ya gotta love curiosity.

Stapled to the packet...on the upper left was a real $1 dollar bill. I remember reading about this marketing trick a while ago...and here it was! I must have "manifested" it with the Law of Attraction! Kidding aside, I was quite happy to have a dollar in return for my attention.

I started reading the 1st page and stopped on the 1st line.
Why? After going through all the trouble of handwriting my name and address and giving me a buck, the salesletter starts out with "Dear Friend". Dude, you just pretended to write my name and address. Now the whole "personalization thing" is out the window. My next step...I went straight to the end to see the signature.

It's from Frank Kern. I've attached a PDF of the entire presentation to fulfill your Warrior curiosity.

Download the Internation House of Ninjas PDF At Franks request, I've removed all URL's from the PDF.

Overall, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Using my name would have nailed it.

Enjoy the read!

I heard someone else talk about getting the dollar bill from Frank a couple weeks ago, when will mine show up? Thanks for linking to the file so we all can see it.

The address wasn't really handwritten. Printers can do real cool things to make it look like that.

Mortgage companies and insurance companies use that trick in direct mail promos I get from them.

Makes me think of a sales letter I got one that promised me a computer (back when I really, REALLY wanted one) if I came to a "conference" ... and after I sat through a 2 hr hard sell session (in a hot stuffy room with no water, and THREE different people coming in to try to bully me into buying what they were selling) ... they sent me out the BACK DOOR with a small box ... that contained a Vic 20 that they'd bought for 10 cents. When I called the computer store to buy peripherals for it, they laughed at me.

So I got a very bad taste in my mouth reading over the sales letter. "Danger, Danger Will Robinson!" is what my inner self says.

I knew printers could do this...but I didn't check twice. Now that I look closer, there are no pressure marks at the beginning of the strokes. So, you're right! Pretty impressive...I didn't even doubt that part until now.

It still doesn't excuse him for forgetting my name.

Edit: It also appears he's segmenting using custom fields in Aweber. What happened to InfusionSoft, Frank?

Edit 2: I replaced the PDF with a blacked-out user/password so Frank Kern's segmentation data doesn't get all screwed up.

Not cool . Not cool at all.

That is Some "tricksy" tactic right there .Is that really neccessary ? Do you have to go subliminal to get the message across ?

I just received this letter in the mail today also.

I find it interesting that Frank spent the time and money ($1 bills and all) to send this through snail mail as opposed to sending it to his bigger email list. Especially since the intent is to get people to go online and fill out his survey. He mentioned in the letter how he sent the letters to 3000 people.

Who's the person he's referring to in his email? Is it Kevin Wilke? I know he JVed with him on his "offline marketing" product earlier this year.

    yes you might be right.

This could be someone else, just pretending to be FK the original. It has happend before online. So they maybe just doing this the offline way.

I wonder how many dollar bills he's posted out so far. He can afford to do it, that's for sure.

Seems to me that the marketers at the top of their game do a lot of thinking and those at the bottom want their thinking done for them. The difference between big success and mediocrity?

Opportunex, I read in Frank's letter that he sent it to 3000 people. So that would be $3000 in $1 bills plus the cost to print and mail them.

There is a marketing group that meets at my office at least once a month. At the last meeting I had Frank's $1 letter sitting on the table and it sparked an interesting conversation.

Turns out, one of the fellows at the meeting had use a $2 bill stapled to the top of one of his sales letters that went out to people who might be intersted in the very expensive video securities systems he sells.

He had a 60% response from that letter - people who wanted him to evaluate the security at their businesses!

That's a variation on the old Gary Halbert dollar letter.

Now if we can only find a way to attach that to the top of a website salespage.

For a man that can afford to send out dollar bills to so many people, surely he can afford an extra .25 cents to get a member of staff to hand write names in ink, on the opening of the letter.

I'm surprised that more people aren't picking up on Jesus' point about congruity and consistency. Those are two secret weapons (and death cards) for most copywriters and marketers in general.

      Hi Steve,

that is exactly what I thought.... he (the guy analyzing) goes off on a bit of a tangent, but when I saw the video i thought it was interesting.

I think the best thing I have got from frank kerns freebie stuff, is dont be like all the other marketers out there. That does not create interest. Be friendly, relaxed and do things the opposite to all the gurus out there. Frank makes money because he is different and has good content. A good lesson to any marketer newbie or guru level.

That video is hilarious. The part about the subliminal stuff. That car displays the radio station and the song playing on the cluster by the speedometer.

I was listening to Jazz on the public radio station, which was doing a fundraiser at the time.

So the song title was "become a member" - because it was during that fundraising part of the show where they ask you to call in and give them money.

So there was no deliberate subliminal message - just a coincidence. I never noticed it until someone "exposed" it.

        Classic.

As far as the letter goes, I used direct mail because it works. Really well. I didn't personalize it because I forgot.

Two versions were sent. One where the session was offered for $97.

One where it was offered for free. Same guarantee.

The one for $97 got a 16.2% response rate.

I wrote a similar piece for a client that manages a hedge fund.

It will have $1,000 in cash enclosed, a $5,000 guarantee, and will be delivered by courier.

        We'll see how it goes.

And whoever posted the letter, please remove the web address.

16% conversion rate when asking for $97!!! How come nobody wants to talk about THAT?

      That's a "Wow!" stat.

Frank doesn't say whether the "free" version of the sales letter pulled better or worse than that.

I'm just glad to hear that direct mail can work well. I'm planning to use it in my own markets.

If anyone wants to pass along any resources to help me do that, I'm all ears.

And how about a direct mail piece with $1,000 enclosed!! That's what I call a qualified market.

Some people here seem to be getting hung up on the cost of attaching a $1 bill to the direct mail piece. The cost is truly insignificant if it results in a great ROI, which is what direct mail should produce, if implemented correctly.

Say you send out 1,000 direct mail pieces that might cost you $1800 for the $1 bills and printing/postage expenses. If this results in even a 3% response rate for a $100 product, that would mean a return of 30X$100 = $3,000 for every 1,000 mailers sent out.

I don't know about you, but I'd gladly send out $1 bills in my direct mail if I got a positive ROI like that. I'm sure Frank meticulously tracks and split tests his direct mail pieces, and you can be absolutely sure he's getting a very nice, positive ROI on them!

The part I found funny was when the digital scrolling display beneath the speedometer said something like "Become A Member" and it was truly an unintended occurrence, as Frank explained the radio station that was currently playing at the time was having some kind of membership drive, which so happened to display below the speedometer right as the video was being filmed!

I think that direct mail marketing is going to experience a resurgence simply because of the fact that so few people are doing it, and as a result it really isn't that hard to stick out like a sore thumb and make an impression on the people who receive your mail.
