Google Gets SUED - Compensation to US Users

Anyone else get the eMail???

Google rarely contacts Gmail users via email, but we are making an
exception to let you know that we've reached a settlement in a lawsuit
regarding Google Buzz (http://buzz.google.com), a service we launched
within Gmail in February of this year.

Shortly after its launch, we heard from a number of people who were
concerned about privacy. In addition, we were sued by a group of Buzz users
and recently reached a settlement in this case.

The settlement acknowledges that we quickly changed the service to address
users' concerns. In addition, Google has committed $8.5 million to an
independent fund, most of which will support organizations promoting
privacy education and policy on the web. We will also do more to educate
people about privacy controls specific to Buzz. The more people know about
privacy online, the better their online experience will be.

Just to be clear, this is not a settlement in which people who use Gmail
can file to receive compensation. Everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail is
included in the settlement, unless you personally decide to opt out before
December 6, 2010. The Court will consider final approval of the agreement
on January 31, 2011. This email is a summary of the settlement, and more
detailed information and instructions approved by the court, including
instructions about how to opt out, object, or comment, are available at
http://www.BuzzClassAction.com.

This mandatory announcement was sent to all Gmail users in the United
States as part of a legal settlement and was authorized by the United
States District Court for the Northern District of California.

    Yes, I read through it.

I didn't really understand it. It just sounded like we have the option to sue Google (which I wouldn't recommend lol).

I was looking for the place where we get paid, but it doesn't sound like it.

I didn't receive that email, and I have multiple gmail accounts.

Hmmm, maybe I should check my gmail spam filters.

I have not read nor received this email yet. But I might check my spam inbox to make sure. Maybe because they have done mass mail, it went to our spam folders.

Yeah ... just don't expect a big check in the mail and don't expect Google not to invade your privacy again if it benefits them. This is just one of many privacy lawsuits and investigations involving Google and privacy.

The only ones making any money in this suit are the lawyers. They get a fat payday, Google gets the suit to go away with a token gesture, and we get to wait and see what they come up with next...

Just wait, they'll ask to vacate the decision and continue like nothing happened. Insurance companies do this kind of stuff all the time, its nothing new.

You loose, you admit wrong doing, you agree to settle in exchange for the decision to be vacated from court records or whatever.

Another worthless case and settlement. All it really means is Google has revamped its terms to better disclose it is invading your privacy.

    Anyone confirmed it?

I believe it's happening, but why in the heck would google refer you to an external site to get information on the lawsuit?

Was that part of the agreement with the Judge?

Odds are, it was the judge that specified where the decision and explanation would be posted. Or at least a set of specs for choosing a place.

Many legal results are required to be posted for public view. That's why the classified section of many newspapers (especially smallish, relatively unknown local papers) have active 'public notice' sections...
