Social Media for Traffic. What is best practice?

So how are people generally driving traffic from social media (facebook / twitter)?

Do they auto follow on twitter and spam? Do the @ people with relevant interests?

Do they create fake facebook profiles? Facebook groups?

What have peoples success been with driving traffic from social media and what are some tips?

Exactly, why do people have to overcomplicate simple things? Social media is all about establishing a personal connection with your followers and friends, so do not go overboard with the automation software and alienate everyone on your list.

Just be real and natural, be sure to mention about what you're doing and thinking, in addition to promoting your products and services. Real people do not talk all day long only about what they have to sell to you!

I make around 3k per week from facebook and I think you need more leverage than just being yourself...

Yes, of course your personality is magnetic and your advice is better than anyone elses because you are you and, of course, you are so special... But if you want to make money, and im talking big money from social media, you need to be using leverage and not just relying on your personality.... Because there is another 585 million of them out there.

I've set up a site dedicated to the process in whcih I use Facebook to bring in $3,000 + a week... check my sig

These recent lawsuits have been because of spam and things of that nature. Not because one is advertising their business.

Just be yourself, occassionally link to a free product you have to offer them.

      It's all about segmentation really.

Some internet marketers have gone overboard with the automation software and are probably sending out way too many promotional links in their tweets and other messages. Not only is this going to alienate your followers and fans, it's going to invite trouble and complaints from others.

As long as you treat others the way you want to be treated, and strive to build real "give and take" type relationships with your followers and fans, social media will not get you into trouble. On the contrary, you'll have a huge list of fans and followers who actively read what you have to say on your social media channels and actually respond to your offers!

It's all about making relationships with your followers and not about pitching sales.

Natural takes a long time... Social is instant.
All depends on your goals and objectives.

    Blog commenting is ok too.

Why not do a bit of each?

I think the good combination is a truthful + natural + good content = success with social media.
It is not that easier that you think. Most of the people that have a lot of friends on facebook/twitter and other social media website is because they have something to say, not just things like "going in bed" "going to eat" and examples can continue.
You must have good things that you talk about.
Now depends what you want to do....personal blog, business blog etc..
In each case a lot of things change.

wow thanks so much for your replies everyone.

When people are saying just be them selves, how does that drive traffic? I am myself all day long to my friends on facebook but I don't EVER advertise my products because they are well my friends...

Do people create different accounts for the business purposes? How do you get followers in your niche?

You can have a business account and personal account.

Personally, I have two accounts. One for my business (A) and one for my family/real life friends (B).

Account A I had added all my friends in skype, gmail, as well as any other emails. I use the Auto add feature facebook offers when you first create the account.

From there, I start being myself. I let people know whenever I decide to watch a movie, I let them know when the sky looks purple, or anything else non business related on my mind.

From those friends I get other friend requests that come in. I accept them while still "Being Myself".

The only time I post a link is when I have something free to offer them. For instance, I recently opened up a Product Launch group in our social network feature here on the forum. I told my friends that I have opened a new group, gave a link and left it at that. I then went forth to create that same group on facebook as a "Facebook group" I received a couple of join request on that which then will be filtered into my WF Social Group as well as my online skype group.

Getting traffic should come from the groups you request. I would suggest posting no more than two links a day. I don't even post that most of the time. During the time I have had my facebook account I have only posted three links ( I think..)

People doesn't want to see link after link in their facebook updates. Social networking is called this because you socialize and network with other people, you get to know them. Leave the selling for other places. Not Facebook (All of this applies to twitter as well).

Offer your friends free information they don't have to opt in to get when you post a link on your wall. When using your groups, you can have the opt in to your mailing list. When they are on your mailing list, that is when your okay to start selling to them.

Hope this makes since, it's kind of long but I couldn't think of a short way to explain this.

      Dedicated to you,

      Matthew Roe

Personally I recommend to separate business from your private life.
    Why this?
Because when you decide to change the business, then change business and your private life remains the same and that means stability*.

*a very important thing in our life.
    Good luck mate!

Go for targeted traffic using social media since spamming will only make pages look cluttered. You will earn traffic in the process especially once you’re able to establish yourself online. The list of things you have to do is already listed here and I think they are the best way to go to make yourself visible and popular online.

Does anyone else here use swom for social marketing? I have had much better results using it than twitter.

@infomaniacs - You got better results using swom because twitter is more for family/personal(and similar) updates.

Look at Swom: "Swom is the social network connecting marketers all over the world!" "Share and discover marketing secrets" "Connect with like-minded people" "Advertise your business opportunities" "Earn referral commissions".

In the Swom social network are more "like-minded people".
