I followed the instructions in the configure ftp inside my cpanel and there is nothing added in filezilla. Please help I really want to get my site designed and out there. Thank You.

    I'm not sure what you're trying to do. Are you attempting to upload via cPanel or use FTP to transfer files via Filezilla? You don't need to configure anything in cPanel in order to transfer files via FTP on Filezilla.

      HostGator provides a .reg file you download and apply to your machine, which is supposed to add your site to the FileZilla account manager.

      You probably need to exit and restart FileZilla for it to show up. It may be outdated, and not work at all anymore - follow the manual instructions to configure FileZilla instead.

      There are aspects of HostGator's hosting which aren't explained in their help system, and conflicting instructions at some parts of the process. You may need to contact them via email and explain what you're trying to do - I did, when I was setting up SFTP to their system.

    Dun worry about that. Sometimes it may cause of the delay of the software itself when you first uploading it using cpanel. I mean Filezilla software. It happens to me also. So, what you can do is just anytime you want to uploading files to your site is to use these Filezilla instead of using directly cpanel. It minimizes these kind of error and you can monitor the transfer easier.

      Hi.

      I don't fully understand what you mean but I'm guessing that you uploaded files to your server via cpanel and are using filezilla to check if they are there?

      So assuming you have the right username/password combo then are you saying that you can access your public_html folder (in Filezilla) but can't see the files you uploaded?

    Are you talking about the auto-configure file that you download and run, and it's supposed to add your FTP info directly to FileZilla? I've tried that many times on several different operating systems (XP, Vista, 7) and never once got it to work.

    I think you'll have to do it manually, but all the info you need should be there. Your server is ftp.YOURDOMAIN.com, and your user name and password are the same as you use to login to cPanel. Port 21. (Though you really should use SFTP - again, nothing I ever could make work with HostGator.)

      If you're still in doubt, just call up Hostgator or contact them on live chat, and they'll tell you precisely what to use for your FTP details. Their customer service is really helpful and responsive.

      SFTP runs on port 2222 for shared servers and 22 for dedicated. Only the main account can use it; your add-on domain users won't work. That's one of those things they don't explain in the help.

        Thanks Caliban. Not only do they not explain it, but they give bad instructions. They tell you the port for SFTP is 22. No wonder I couldn't ever get it to work. :rolleyes:

          Agreed. There are three sets of instructions on their site, if you really look, which are:

          1. Use port 2222 on shared and port 22 on dedicated, login with "yourname@yourdomain.com" (doesn't work)

          2. Use port 2222, login with "yourname" (works on shared)

          3. Use port 22, login with "yourname" (works on dedicated)

          There is nothing on the system to inform you that your addon domain users can't use SFTP because of a technology limitation.

          Which isn't really true; it's the way they've implemented addon domain users. If they were implemented "correctly," instruction set 1 would be accurate and your addon domain users would work, too.

          But I'm not on HostGator for the support, anyway.

      You're right - that's what he means! And I agree that it doesn't work.

      I've just tried it for a couple of my domains and nothing happens after the regedit.

    Thank you everyone... Why do I even need to use filezilla? I was trying to upload a theme and was doing what someonels told me to do. I bought a theme and saved it on my desktop and was told to connect filezilla with hostgator and send the theme through there. Why in the hell wouldn't I just go into wordpress and upload my theme from there? My head is hurting... two days I have been trying to do this

      You sound a little confused there! If you're using Wordpress and want to install a theme, then FTP isn't (absolutely) needed. You could get fancy and upload the theme folder via FTP to your wp-content directory, but you don't need to do it that way. Upload it via the Wordpress control panel, just like you've said (especially if FTP makes you nervous, which I think it does!)

    COnfused as hell absolutely... I feel like I need to know how to do this so I am not always depending on someone else. This learning curve is frustrating, and what is simple for seemingly everyone else, looks like Mt. Everest to me.

      Hang in there, friend...

      Anyone who has been around these contraptions for any length of time has felt the same way about some part of it.

      The bad part is, every time you try something someone tells you and it doesn't work, the speed bump looks bigger.

      The good part is, once you do figure things out and do it a couple of times, the speed bump will magically flatten out and you'll wonder why it ever gave you trouble...

    A word of caution - the .reg file that HG gives you will wipe out any existing connections you have stored in Filezilla, at least it did that to me.

      Fortunately, it didn't do that for me but Steve has an excellent point that things can go wrong if you change registry entries so it's best to take a Filezilla backup (File>Export) of your entries and settings before you try to automatically make changes.

    Forgetabout your Cpanel. Open filezilla, go to site manager, click on new site, paste a short version of your domain name in, go to top of panel on the right, enter "ftp.yourdomainname" User: normal, enter username, then Password, click connect, That will take you to your remote server, click on "www" then drag and drop whatever you want to upload. Simple. Been using filezilla for years, and have hosted with hostgator for years.

    Hey buddy, I don't know if you've found the solution for your problem. If not, I'm having the same troubles today and here's how I finally got the thing to work:

    1 - open FileZilla's "Site Manager" (upper left corner of the window).

    2 - click "New Site".

    3 - in the "Host" field, type your site's URL without the "h t t p" and the "w w w" parts, and also without adding "f t p." at the beginning. I was doing that (following directions from some thread I found online) and that was preventing the thing to work.

    So if your site is "h t t p : / / w w w . greatestgolfswing . c o m" just put there "greatestgolfswing . c o m". (I put some extra spaces above on purpose, because WF was not accepting "links" in my reply)

    4 - Port: leave blank. FileZilla will get it automatically for you.

    5 - Server Type: "FTP - File Transfer Protocol"" (that’s what I needed; didn’t test it with the other types)

    6 - Login Type: I tested it with both "Normal" and "Ask For Password" modes, and it worked.

    7 - User: Put the username you use to log in to your HostGator (or your host, if different) account (CPanel).

    8 - Password: Put the password you use to log in to your HostGator (or your host, if different) account (CPanel).

    9 - Click OK at the bottom.

    10 - Open the Site Manager again and click "Connect" at the bottom.

    It should work flawlessly. It did for me, and I hope it will for you too.

    Take care.

      The method I use to create SFTP connections with Filezilla/Hostgator is easy...

      Launch Filezilla
      Select Site Manager
      Click "New Site"

      Then enter the following info:
      Host = yourdomain.com [no ftp - sftp - http - etc]
      Port = 2222
      Login Type = Normal
      Server Type = SFTP [select from drop-down menu]
      User = Your cpanel login [no additional "@yourdomain.com" ]
      Pass = Your cpanel password

      Give it a try & be secure....
