Obviously if you improve your conversion rate then you won't need as much traffic.

What is your best tip for imrpoving your conversion rate?

Please list 1 item so it makes it easier to read for newbies.

I persaonally use a heat map to see what my customers are vlicking on etc. One small thing I found in doing this is that more people click on a text link to purchase than on a graphic.

That icreased my conversions quite a lot. Its all about testing.

      Know your audience.
      Know your audience.
      Know your audience.

Increasing conversion rate is as much art as it is science in my experience. Sure there are a lot of page elements to consider. But at the end of the day you need to know the person who is coming to the page.

      - Who are they?
      - How did they get to your page (are they a cold lead, warm lead)?
      - What's their pain?
      - What are their TOP core wants and does what you are providing/selling actually solve one of those core wants?
      - Is the way you've set up your page/site consistent with their existing behavior (translation: study your successful competition)

And one of the most overlooked keys:
      - Are they already pre-disposed to BUYING stuff similar to whatever the heck you're selling?

No matter what anyone says there is no "perfect" way to set up a page for maximum conversions nor is there the "perfect" text to put on it.

If you make an effort to know the human beings coming to your page and set things up accordingly, you will be amazed at the conversions you get.

Having no options to exit the page seems to make a difference.

For example - if you have a sales page, don't have an opt in email box.

Also, having a very narrow part of your niche also seems to make a difference.

For example; If you have an interest in restoring cars, make your site about something very narrow in this niche instead of the whole site being about restoring cars - like

    "how to paint your car".

I'm surprised nobody has given you the answer directly: split testing.

      I agree with Chris:

      Test
      Test
      Test

I can tell you what works for me, but chances are it might not work for you. The only way to learn what works for you is to do MASSIVE testing.

There is always a test underway at every one of my sites. Always. No matter how high of a conversion rate I achieve, there is always room for improvement, and I am constantly testing to find out how to get there.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If you're serious about doing business online, buy these books. If you're broke, do what you have to do to afford them.

I have a course in my office - a good one, and well worth the money - that cost me 4 figures, and isn't as useful to a serious online business person as either of them.

"10%" has a sexier title, but "Small Changes" is the basis for it. I'd start with the latter, and use what you learn immediately. You'll be able to afford whatever other course(s) you want very quickly if you do.

There's damned little I recommend as highly for business reading as those two books.

The best conversion tip is to test everything!

Use multi-variable testing if your site generates enough traffic so that you can get results within waiting several months.

    My suggestion:

    1. Test your page with different title, content and pictures.
    2. Do the test 1 at a time and test it for some time (7 days??)
    3. Know your audience - Study your niche forums, know what they want and what is their problem, and how to solve it!
    4. Focus on Benefit, benefit, benefits!
    5. Do opt-in email and follow up marketing with the research from forums, give them what they want and lead them to buy later..
    6. Test and test and test again....

What Paul Myers and the Night Owl said

I can't think of a single better tip than to SPLIT TEST, and there's not really much excuse for not doing it. Man, you can even do it with 10 visitors a day (although you'd probably need to test on subscriptions rather than sales.)

My second tip would be to put yourself in the mind of the ultra-skeptical, cynical, "been-there-done-that" kind of visitor. What would convince that person to sign up, or buy?

If you can discover the way to convert your most cynical visitors, you can convert the rest much more easily

You can discover these things by INTELLIGENCE discerned from...

    (a) testing
    (b) watching your visitor's behaviours
    (c) feedback

    ... and rinsing and repeating.

      Make every pixel count!

In other words, examine every element on your site and if it doesn't earn its keep by increasing conversion rate or visitor value then either:

      1. Improve it so it does

      or

      2. Replace it with something that does

And I do mean every pixel.

      Cheers,

      Neil
