Does a CHKDisk scan Solve speed/crash issues?

  • No chkdisk is not for speeding up your computer. It is only for finding and fixing corupted files. If you are having problems with crashes and or slow speeds it is likely you have picked up some spamware or malware. Which you will need one of the many tools out there to take care of this problem separately.
  • Trend Micro provides an online system called Housecall that will allow you to run a full scan of your computer without using software that's already on your computer. It simply installs a small java applet. It's possible you need something like that. I've used it often when helping clients with their computers and have often found trojans and viruses that have caused problems. I have no connection with the program, just know it's good to use. I've not been here long enough to post links but if you Google housecall you'll find it.

  • It will help find corrupted files or disk space. It will not speed up the computer unless the corrupted file is causing the problem. ScanDisk is the same thing as chkdsk, but newer.

    Defrag may help speed up the computer by defragmenting the files on the hard drive.

    I left Windoze a year ago and barely miss it. I have a few things that only run in Windows so I run them on a laptop that dual boots with Linux. I have used Ubuntu since May of 09 almost exclusively. Over that time, it has not slowed down one bit. It never needs defragmenting and I don't have to load it down with anti-virus protection! It flies compared to Windows. Windows on the laptop was installed also in May and configured with all but one small piece of software I installed since then. I only use it about one hour a month, yet it has become much slower over the last roughly 18 months since I installed it.

    Several technicians have informed me that the only way to keep Windows operating at maximum speed is to reinstall it completely between one and two years. While windows system files are very much responsible for the slow down, Anti-virus/anti-malware software is an equal contributor to the speed reductions. The number of virus/malware products that anti-virus/malware software has to scan for nearly doubles every year. It takes time to compare your file with each of the millions of "patterns" that could be malware on your system.

    • Firstly, to resolve issues with slow speed run Disk Defragmenter.

      To resolve system crashes make a note of any error messages that come up when the system crashes or what application was running at the time and research for any issues on the internet.

      If your problem started after adding a new program then remove that program and see if the problem persists.

      You could download Adaware Free and remove any tracking cookies and beacons as that sometimes can be the cause of a slow PC.

      Tha ultimate solution is to do a reinstall as it removes all the dross and crosslinked files that result after installing lots of unnecessary programs.

      When you do the reinstall dont install programs unless you intend to use them.
